Then I wanted his/her sacrifice to mean something, to be a conscious choice. I would have greatly preferred Shepard doing some kind of suicide run in the crucible to kill Harbinger/disable his lackeys or something like that. Saying goodbye to his LI over the com before then end, instead of dying alone with nobody knowing what happened.

I want a hero's funeral, an N7 coffin, a mourning LI/crew. I want to cry tears of sadness not ones of frustration and confusion. I want to see the good things I did have an effect, something like seeing the Geth and Quarians start to rebuild Rannoch, or baby Krogan running around while Eve stares up at a sky free of reapers.

Finally, good to see I'm not alone in thinking this way. I really didn't mind Shepard dieing, but I wanted him to die a heroic death. I'm talking about fighting wave after wave of reapers to the suicide mission track, saving all his buddies and the galaxy in the process.

Screw setting down with his LI, this is a war, not some dating sim. What a boring fate that would be, Shepard is larger than life, rather see him go out all Cain's blazing.

well what can I say I'm glad you kinda got what just F*k the rerst of us that may want somthing other than doom and gloom and yes death is just death.

We're not saying we're glad Shepard died in every ending, just that if they were going to do it, they should have given it impact and done it well. I wish there was an option for mshep to keep his promise to Kaidan and be waiting for him, alive and well, or for Garrus and femshep to settle down together and adopt a bunch of babies. BUT since Bioware insisted on gloom and doom and no alternatives, it should have actually meant something

I don't know why everyone assumes that Shepard MUST die in the ending...

What about if you did everything right, and prepared accordingly, why should you still have to die?

Because Bioware said so and artistic integrity.

Actually come to think of it...with Mac running things...maybe it's better that Shepard just die in ME3.

Before being reduced to a COD clone mascot.

Saying "the hero must-" anything defeats the point of Mass Effect.

This is such a rubbish response that people constantly come up with, its totally false.

Shepard MUST choose between Ashley and Kaidan, rather than trying to save them both, or leaving them to their fate. Not only that, Shepard MUST choose either Ashley or Kaidan - why couldnt I pick someone else to detonate the bomb?

Shepard MUST either destroy the collector base, or give it to cerberus, there is no keeping it for himself or handing it over to the council/alliance.

Shepard MUST take his crew members onto the shuttle and fly to some random place while the collectors board the normandy.

I could go on, point is, there are tons of things Shepard "must" do in the series. Mass Effect gives you choice but not complete control of the story and its narrative.

This. And she has already died once, that's enough.

i'm totally ok with Shepard's sacrifice if it means that in that way the galactic civilizations aren't totally screwed, and if that sacrifice isn't just a leap of faith (in a mysterious and unforeshadowed entity who just picked from your mind the form which makes him feel most guilty OR tricked his mind all along the game) like an idiot.

Otherwise destroy is the only way to go.
