The following advice is intended to give the novice player a basic framework for success. I recognize that there are many ways to play the game, and the following advice represents just one approach. I have tried to be brief, but the post is still quite long.
Advice for Ostagar camp:
1. Make sure to buy the backpack from the merchant. Also, buy all of his elfroot, lyrium dust, and a couple dozen flasks. Use these to make lesser health poultices and lesser lyrium potions with the herbalism skill. If you are a mage then you started with it, otherwise just wait until you get mage characters from the game to make potions.
2. Set healing potions to your quick command bar menu on all your characters. You will soon be able to produce infinite amounts of lesser health poultices and lesser lyrium potions inexpensively, so don’t be shy about using them as necessary.
3. Get used to leading with Alister to “pull” enemies. When you suspect an enemy group is up ahead, set your party on hold with the H key or by clicking on the walking person icon underneath your character portraits. This will make all of your party members stay in place unless manually moved. Walk ahead with Alistair until you trigger the nearest enemy(s), then run them back to your waiting party. This process will often result in you fighting the enemy group in smaller chunks rather than all at once.
4. Go into the tactics menu of the rogue in your party and change his AI behavior in the upper right corner from DEFAULT to RANGED. You should put all of your mages and archers on this setting.
5. Taunt is an extremely important skill. Alistair works great as a “tank” because he starts with shield skills, so have him use taunt at the start of encounters to keep the enemy focused on him. Keep him healed and your life will be easy. You will want to give him enough DEX to unlock the shield skills that give him more survivability, then straight pump his STR to equip the best armor. Don’t bother with WIL or CON.
Post-Lothering:
1. Go to the Dalish Camp in the Brecilian forest first because it sells infinite amounts of elfroot.
2. If you have the DLC, do that next as it gives you a number of great items.
3. Next, go to the mage tower. Do this for several reasons:
A) You can buy infinite lyrium dust with which you can make lyrium putions.
B.) You get Wynn, who is great as a heal bot. Give her the following tactics:
1.) Heal ally when they have less than 75% hp.
2.) Use group heal when an ally has less than 50% health.
3.) Attack enemy with the lowest health with arcane bolt.
C) Your PC will get a number of nice stat boosts.
D) You get the templar armor from one of the encounters which will help Alistair in his tanking efforts.
Obviously there is much more that can be said on the subject, but this will start you on the right path. Initially the game can be quite challenging, but once you know how it works you might find yourself wishing Nightmare was more difficult.
