"Can't see the forest through the trees"

They were so close to the game they didn't see the ending as insufficient. Also, they probably didn't realize how attached to the characters some of us had become, I know it was a shock even to me.  If true and the ending wasn't peer reviewed that also contributed. They wanted us to speculate on the ending but they setup a very grim universe to speculate.

Lack of peer review can cause this and so can being "too close" to the product.  Mix the two togehter and well...

They need a better setup if they want us to speculate to a more hopeful, uplifting, and whatever-other-emotions they wanted us experience in the ending.

OK, read this http://www.ign.com/a...ler-controversy

so....how is it exactly monstrosities like that are "missed"? how do devs NOT foresee things so utterly obvious and/or adopt this defense apparently genuinely assuming people would take it at face value?

To your question I am not sure how they miss this stuff. To the Hitman trailer controversy though I fail to see what was so offensive about it.

They must have had play testers that weren't involved too directly in development right? Didn't they notice any of them getting depressed or angry after the first time they saw the ending?

I did not even watch it, I read the original articles....still....it is only one example, we could make more

Considering how I've yet to find anyone who was actually offended by the trailer, I really can't say who is angry or why.

as far as them "not expecting" this kind of reaction they're either trolling people HARD, really stupid, or are up to something and bluffing.

did not expect, oh we just nullified every decision you ever made in this game and essentially killed off the entire cast in a 2 minute cutscene and shepard dies and the galaxy is destroyed/enslaved/mutated no matter what. and your choices don't matter. how could they POSSIBLY not like that?

Because you grow attached to the game you were making.

Don't know if anyone here watched Extra Credits [Now... Not liking them so much], but one time they did an episode where partway through James explained what had happened to him when he'd been called in to help some dev team with their game. He started by testing it, to see what the problems were. He found out he couldn't even open his inventory, and there were no instructions on how to do so. You had to double tap the "I" key or something.
To the devs, this was natural as they'd made it, thought of it, and had been used to it for some time. They thought it fit, and didn't realise others might not.

The test group may have thought it fit too, considering some people do, however it is also possible that those who said it didn't weren't listened to. It does happen. Especially when you're running out of time for the release.

Way I understand it is people got pissed off that it depicted scantilly clad women getting beaten up by some bald guy. I don't know why that's a problem honestly, its not RL, its a fictional trailer. It would be no different if the bald guy were beating up some men in business suits.
I don't get what some people's problems are sometimes. It makes no sense to me.

Most likely. Been a while since I've watched them now, though they did do some very good episodes for a time.

Give a hardcore devoted fan a copy of the game before release, don't pay him any money or give him anything that could possibly be considered a bribe, and see how he reacts.

Do this with a handful of people and collect their reactions to the ending.

Course it doesn't take a college level literature analysis to see the plot-holes in the story.

No need to predict anything, a focus group would've sufficed.

NO NO NO:)

Make the game you want, if it turns out bad, then deal with it or even change it for the fans.  Please do not make game via focus groups. All you end up with is a slightly above bland product that is made to make the most people possible feel slightly above the emotion of "blah" about your product.

As for the Hitman trailer, it is no more offensive that any comic book female villains. The orignal article that caused all this crap was a single idiot throwing around the term rape culture for hits on his whiny article about political correctness and how games celebrate violence.

Read: This is a game about a dude that assassinates people for a living. Argue about that as a game premise, but don't whine and complain that he killed some super assassin chicks in leather. We can't have a series of games about playing killer assassins, then only complain about the hot women he kills.

well Asari are clearly not Human, but ME1 took a huge thrashing from parents because of the femShepxLiara scene

So it's the developers fault that they don't forsee people take offence to fictional aliens having fake sex, or religious people taking offence to non-religious people trying to kill a Hitman and getting killed by him?

Pretty sure there's someone in a nun outfit in that Skullgirls game though I haven't heard much controversy spawn from that.

everytime a GTA comes out over protective parents try to get it banned. perhaps theyve moved on to other crime-based games as well

Which is really annoying because it was mostly just intimacy/romance rather than raunchy sex or large breast/ass that is depicted in most games.

Thanks Fox News, for throwing more fuel on that fire.

What do you wanna bet, the playtesters hadn't played through, the first two of this series?

Thereby not getting focused on LORE, and just bug-checking.
