The capacity to do something well stemming from one's knowledge, training, or aptitude.

Thats about it in a nutshell. Would just change the "or" to  "and"

Or was actually more accurate.

Godless's definition is a good general definition of skill. For ME3 though, knowledge is the most important aspect for doing well. If you optimize your character and use the most powerful weapons/skills/equipment/etc, then you will do better than someone that can, say, aim better and has been situational awareness than you.

A skill is the learned capacity to carry out pre-determined results often with the minimum outlay of time, energy, or both.

Agreed with the others that N7 rank has nothing to do with skill.

I would say that skill is to do with how well you do things like use cover, grab enemies over barriers and generally support your team. There are too many people who don't do those things properly, and I don't think that they can be referred to as "skillful".

I am the definition of skill. No matter what, when I go into a random lobby with 3 people I don't know, I always score top by miles, do most of the objectives and almost never go down. Any difficulty, it doesn't matter. Makes me think that people don't know how to play this game, which is why I almost never play anymore. Might change now that I have finished Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

The fact that I've never soloed gold gives me feelings of inadequacy sometimes.

But yes, I'd guess that the capacity for soloing is used as an indicator of skill around here. At least by some.

Why? Soloing Gold is hard, I've tried many many times and only done it a handful of times. And I feel like a damned good player.

I don't have the best of guns either. I'm sure if the RNG favored me a bit more and gave me some better weapons in the UR department I could definitely raise my Gold solo to 7/10 success from my current 2/10.

But get me on a team with people who don't drop out and I'll get that damned extraction every time. My Gold success rate with a team of decoys (lol joking) is like 17/20. And the only reason I ever fail is because I get greedy and don't buy a Jumbo Equipment pack and attempt to do Gold with bad teams while I am short on Med-Gel or Rockets.

Those times are mostly because I feel like a challenge and I usually end up with one. Sometimes funner to fail hard than to constantly walk through Gold.

The answer lies within the context that you intend for the word skill. Ideally it means that a player possesses a degree of competance howecpver there are multiple aspects to skill. I personally believe that everyone has certain skills that can make them good or otherwise.
1 team work
A person may be a terrific player without his squad but a terrible detriment to the squad. Or visa versa. Also in this category is attitude willingness to play a support role if necessary is vital
2 singular ability
A person's ability while playing without a squad (readily measured by solo on gold or clutch situations)
3 leadership
Ability to take charge and rally what forces provided for given cause. Also ability to take orders. Readily tested by taking bronzes onto gold and leading to victory with minimum casualties
4 tactics/intelligence
Naturally granted but improved with experience. Tested the same as previous but using on the go tactics not premeditated stratagems.
5 natural ability
Enough said

Please share your thoughts on my answer

Skill can mean may things, but if I want to know someone's skill, looking at their class, weapons, mods, and those three in relation to each other gives you a pretty good idea of who you're playing with.

N7 means nothing to me, except below 120 means they're new for sure, because they havn't maxed everything yet, and into the thousands means they either farm, or buy lots of packs for the character cards. Neither of which I want to play with.

Doing the right thing, i.e not just killing everything that moves, supporting teammates and focusing of objectives

Using your class the right way.
I use male quarian infiltrator and keep using tactical scan to provide allies whereabouts of those pesky phantoms

Use consumables when in trouble, I hate it when people try to save rockets especially wave 10 of gold when everyone is being taken down.

Overall, you dont have to be a pro but stick together with your team and don't be a lone wolf.

If class determines skill, what would you think of a krogaurd sniper? Judging by one of your other forum you find krogans and vanguards detestable yet with my krogan vanguard sniper I regularily win on gold against all three opponents, when working with a squad, random or otherwise

sorry for the snide remark i mistook you for someone else

You know you are skilled if you find out that you can play a match more leisurely and actually look whether the pantom's body is attractive or not.

When you dished out serious @sskicking on a Gold map (non-FBWGG) while all your teammates were insta-killed by Banshees/Phantoms/Brutes early in the wave. And managed to finish that wave without even burning a single consumable and did it in under 3 minutes using a glitched Human Vanguard.

Now, that's what I call skill.

for me, skill is what STARDUSK is doing, you dont need to be the best player, but to be creative, building new charakters with suitable weapons, thats it what i think makes this game really interesting !

me for instance, i rely to often on the geth infiltrator , cause every day i join some random/random/gold and i am too greedy to use equipments, infiltrators makes it easy to solo when playing with unexperienced players that do not have the amount of fire power, so saving the wave or the team let me feel better ,instead of asking why i put myself in the position playing for example with a turian soldier as a lone survivor against geth on a small map!
that happened to me frequently and only when i played a class that was not as overpowered ....
of course i can t blame myself for others going down so fast, but i enjoy playing with randoms to meet new people!

I dunno...the ability to rapidly assess and exploit the benefits of each class and each weapon. I play with a guy who, within moments of unlocking a character or weapon is damn near a master with that character or weapon. No matter what he plays, he tends to top the scoreboard at the end of each mission. Of course, he's also got a lot of experience playing games like this. Or similar types of MP games.

Hell if I know, though...maybe it's just talent as opposed to skill.

Maybe the ability to combine situational awareness with what I mentioned above. And in this instance, situational awareness also covers a familiarity with game dynamics, such as controlling spawn points. Or understanding enemy AI.

N7 level is only judgeable until the rating of 200+-. After that, there are tons of people that don't promote their characters anymore and leave them at level 20, so a player with an N7 rating of 200 could have 10 times the battle experience/weapons/gear of a player with an N7 of 1000.

I usually don't take much notice on individual players, mostly on the team as whole. If we just had a great gold run, I take it that the team played well and every member contributed to a successfull mission. It is safe to assume then that those 4 players are good players, unless you noticed that there was one player that was constantly dying, running away from the group, zerging away, etc. But usually for a team to succeed on gold matches(not couting FBW/G/G) the whole team must be playing together, so it is rare to find such individuals on successfull random gold runs.
