Oh, well there's a nonzero chance that unicorns are real, so you might not want to take a stand on that one either. See how helpful I am? :innocent:

I actually do take this same viewpoint on everything that has not been proven.

And I find that hilarious. It seems you're just a persuasive argument away from believing in literally anything.

Oh no, because it has not been PROVEN. See where I'm coming from now?

Well, if that were your only criteria, you'd be an avowed atheist. Because the "positive" proclamation, that gods exist, has not been PROVEN. See where I'm coming from? Your stance seems to entertain every single notion, however preposterous, on an equal footing with what we can observe easily. Gods, unicorns, fairies, wizards, witches—they're all standing toe-to-toe with the universe that we can observe directly. You'll give them the benefit of the doubt, even though that doubt is infinitesimal.

Oh, religion has tremendous value. It is one of the most powerful motivators of people there is. And really, religion is just a pretty clown suit for Fear. Because that's what underlies the whole scheme. You're afraid of death, afraid of punishment, afraid of missing out on a reward, it all comes back to fear and a sort of collective narcissism. We are the chosen people! Even though the universe is incomprehensibly vast, even though there are billions upon billions of humans on this wet rock we call home, the one who created it all Only Cares About Us. Doesn't everything boil down to fear or greed?

Heh, I just like to poke the hornet's nest every now and again... well, most of the time, actually.

We are interesting creatures though, so sure of our own knowledge in things that we honestly know very little about - and our minds so easily succumb to black and white thinking: things must be this way or that way, neither can ever be wrong (nor both right), nor can there every be a "grey area", nor can we settle on something simply being "unknowable."

Labels are funny things, too - they're really nothing but something we invented to help keep track of and sort people and things out in our feeble little minds. Yet some religiously adhere to them as truth, and feel comfortable applying them to anyone and anything, including themselves.

I am certainly not above such quirks - I am human, after all...

...well, I'm more machine than man - you saw the end of Revenge of the Sith, after all. :P

re: "believing in Darwinism" - the only merit to taking issue with that sentence would be the one that of course it isn't good scientific rigour to have "BELIEF" in any scientific theory, only a neutral approach to what is or is not proven according to the best available data.

Ref: Galileo

It would still be a flimsy point anyway tbh. Science is not something that requires belief, any more than religion is a matter of proof and data.

Evidence does not change, theories do, when more evidence is found and added to it. I might be wrong, but I don't see what civilization has to do with it. What is the point you're trying to make?

Oh but it does require belief. Even as a big advocate of science, I have to admit that. To even think your senses and observations have meaning and reflect what's actually going on takes a bit of belief.

Well there is no such thing is "believing in Darwinism", as evolution is pretty much an observed and proven fact. So either you accept it, or you deny it. Saying you believe in Darwinism is like saying you believe in gravity.

Actually, there's a difference between an observed fact and the theory that tries to explain it.  Yeah, you accept the observed fact that gravity exists (you jump up and come back down and literally, absolutely, definitely SEE that), but all that stuff Einstein came up with to try to explain it is what you choose to believe in (or at least, you know that it works predicitively for all the stuff you've used it for, but as far as what it implies about the nature or reality, I would still consider it choice whether or not you choose to believe in that.)

And just to add to this, while we do observe evolution in some capacity (I'm not sure how we have since it's not a topic I'm familiar with), the theory that tries to explain it might be wrong, at least in some areas.  And that's not an unusual thing to happen in science; that's how science evolves sometimes.

For example, Isaac Newton.  The guy's theory on how gravity works, did in fact work pretty well, meaning when you plugged the numbers into his equations, you more or less got the right results (e.g. shoot a cannon ball with x trajectory and it ended up where Newton said it would).  But it was also assumed that his theory worked at very high speeds, including the speed of light.  Turned out he was wrong, and that this whole time there was a limit to the range of circumstances in which his theory worked; Einstein came along and updated our understanding with a more correct theory of gravity that now takes into account how things work differently near the speed of light.  The observed fact of gravity remains the same, obviously, but the theories we use to work with it have evolved.

"Anyone who doesn't believe the Earth is flat at this point is an idiot" - the entire scientific community at one point.

WRT: believing in scientific theories.

Go back and look at history before a curtain conutry won/lost any war.then go into the future and see how the country changed.you learn that things were left out or completely changed due to idea.
which leads fact as wrong as killing children
