Unsurprising that one of the people who keeps misusing the memes is the one claiming there's no "right way" to use them. Of course there's a right way, the jokes follow a format, breaking the format has a jarring effect that removes the person from the humor.

I would argue that I have a far better understanding of the history, development, propogation and evolution of memes than the people who are insisting that I and others are using them "wrong."  A meme does not need to be static, nor does it have to uniformly conform to rules over time.  If memes observed static rules, they wouldn't exist.  Most internet memes are actually the combination of two or more disparate things, put together to create something new that can be amusing, insightful, ridiculous or bring out any number of other feelings in people. 

By taking existing memes, breaking their rules, and coming up with end products that other people enjoy, we are in fact following the only rule that matters in memes: Make more of them.  Some may not be to your taste.  Some of them may not even be good.  But many memes that obey your rules are also bad, not funny and should generally be disregarded. 

Rather than continually linking to knowyourmeme.com, I would suggest reading The Selfish Gene to get an understanding of memes on a global/cultural level.   Even perusing the Wikipedia articles specifically about the subcategory of Internet Memes may enlighten you a bit about them. 

I will excerpt this from the Wikipedia article to illuminate the changing nature of memes:

An Internet meme may stay the same or may evolve over time, by chance or through commentary, imitations, parody, or by incorporating news accounts about itself. Internet memes can  evolve and spread extremely rapidly, sometimes reaching world-wide popularity within a few days. Internet memes usually are formed from some social interaction (Rage comic or reaction faces), pop culture reference (Xzibit in "Yo Dawg" or Bear Grylls in "Better drink my own ******"), or situation people often find themselves in (Socially Awkward Penguin or Futurama Fry / Not Sure If X). Many memes also come from video games (such as the "arrow in the knee" from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim).

Now please kindly leave us and our good time be.  Feel free to contribute with any memes that you want, and you can have your memes conform to whatever rules you would like.  But I would ask that you and all the rest of the meme critics to reference this post or my O'Reilly image in the future, as this is the last comment I will make on it.
