At my first attempt to play human noble origin, all was good.

When I restarted, I got no option to name my mabari in the larder (the window simply doesn't show). He is called simply 'Dog'. I tried again, starting a new game - the same result.

And I absolutely have to name it 'Mischief'. :o

Playing as a city elf, I had no problem naming the dog.

Still, it was well before my second attempt as human noble. Maybe there would be a problem now. I don't feel like investing few hours to check that... (as I have no saves).

Well, it's not ideal, but I think you can rename your dog if you open your latest savegame in the Toolset. There's character stats in the save file, and it should be easy to find a field with the word "Dog" and change it (backup your save first).

I have experienced the same issue with a new human noble origin. I can confirm that it happened after installing the new patch and making a new game.

If you have the toolset, you may have one of the toolset corruption bugs... check the Troubleshooting FAQ for the "fix for strange issues"

So until Bioware fixes things, here's how to change the dog's name through the toolset:
  • Go to My Documents/BioWare/Dragon Age/Characters/[name of your character]/Saves and find the folder with your latest save.  Make a backup of the .das (Dragon Age Save) file in the folder.
  • Open that same .das file in the Toolset.
  • Drill down to SAVEGAME_PARTYLIST > SAVEGAME_PARTYPOOLMEMBERS.
  • Under SAVEGAME_PARTYPOOLMEMBERS should be a numbered list of entries, starting with 0, with information about each NPC party member you currently have.  Look for the dog's entry; it's the one starting with gen00fl_dog under TEMPLATERESREF.
  • You should see a field SAVEGAME_OBJECT_NAME under the dog's entry, and the field to the right should say something like 63091:Dog.  Change "Dog" or whatever is currently there to your new name.  In the OP's case, it would be 63091:MischiefIMPORTANT: Don't remove the number in front of the name.  I'm fairly certain that's for dialogue ID purposes.
  • Save your new savegame and open it ingame for verification.  Voila, renamed dog.

And yes, it's also entirely possible that the toolset messed up your game if you have the toolset, particularly 1.00.

Thanks for the solution Mongoose22. I was having the issue before the Toolset even touched my harddrive so I am positive it was the 1.02 patch. Thanks again for the quick fix, the toolset is awkward for a first time user.

I've been unable to name the dog when playing as a human noble or a Dalish elf. I had no problems naming him until patch 1.02 (I played an elven mage and human noble before), but now the game simply won't let me, neither before nor after I installed the toolset. Thanks for the workaround, Mongoose22!

Edit: When I opened the toolset, I saw that after "63091" there was no ":Dog". Possible source of the bug? Anyway, I put ":Cyril" after the numbers and it worked.

Thanks for all your input, especially Mongoose22. I was able to change dog's name via toolset.

And yes, I didn't noticed that but problem surfaced after installing 1.02 patch.

BUT!

When I started yet another game as Human Noble (wanting to try something silly) the option to name the dog was simply there, as earlier!

Weird...

Thank you so much Mongoose22 and Neriana.

Had this same problem (only on human noble) and this solved it for me as well.

(I had nothing after 63091 either)

"Lucky" barks happily...

Please forgive the massive necroing of this thread but I was wondering if some kind soul could help me. I've also got this 'Can't Name Dog in the Noble Origin' bug and wanted to do so using the tips detailed in here. However, I have never, ever used the Toolset before and I have no idea where the field I'm supposed to alter is. Here's a screenshot of where I've gotten to; I just don't know where this alleged 63091:Dog field is supposed to show up at.

Little help?

There is an entire setup of forums dedicated to using the toolset, actually.

Son of a . . . I actually found where I needed to change. Was simply looking in the wrong spot. -_- Thanks for the help anyways, though.

Just glad to hear you managed the fix, with or without the direct input, since I haven't gotten the toolset to play with, myself.
