This is what EC looks like in my head. I'm probably setting myself up for an angsty alcoholic binge after this announcement or preview, or whatever.

This is what the ending should have been but I am not holding out hope that EC will be anything but a facepalm moment

A picard double face palm would be the most appropriate face palm in the face of disappointment.

Hey don't feel so bad people, if the IT isn't what we expected, there is always the Schwartz:

every poll out there has the anit-enders at 85-90% and the pro=enders at 5-10%. thats what they mean by small.

The actual numbers are really hard to gague. People who are angry about something are far more likely to speak up than people who are content or who just feel "meh" about it. I know about 10 people IRL who have completed ME. Out of that group, only 1 of them is genuinely angry about the end of the game, and he is VERY vocal about it. Out of the 9 who are somewhere in between "It's a weak cop-out" and "I actually enjoyed it," I am the only one who is actually on the forums and surveys mucking up the hate stats with my sunshine and cyborg ponies.

While I could try and rally the rest of these people to my pro-ending cause, most of them either don't care enough, or don't want to get anywhere near the vitriol that has been the online fanbase, so I wouldn't have much success.

I'm not saying my particular subsection of the general ME fan population is an accurate representation of the whole. I'm just saying that even online stats aren't going to cover the entire population base simply because a lot of people don't bother to interact with the gaming community, even though they are gamers.

I have about the same number of friends in RL who played all the way through the three games. Only one of them is of the "meh it is what it is" camp. All the others are either really sad that it had such a weak ending and don't bother anymore, or are so fed up they don't care anymore. None of them interact with the gaming community online. The friends I have that do interact online...100% of them are not only anti-ending, but ending haters. Lol. Point is, even if you have a bunch of friends who range from "meh" to "liked it," doesn't mean that someone else's group of friends represents the same subset of opinions. More often than not, I find the more invested someone is into the ME lore, the more they do not like the ending.

Whenever I go to GameStop, Best Buy, school, or even Walmart, wearing anything ME-related, inevitably, someone will commisserate with me about the ending. I think that right there speaks volumes about how poorly-recieved the ending was. Even if people don't outright hate it or not like it, they're most likely saying it wasn't great, either. I have never come across anyone saying, "Mass Effect! Now there's an awesome ending to a story!" in RL. Ever.

The only time I've ever had someone try to defend it is a guy that works at my local grocery store when he's not working as a writer at Machinma. He even admitted he's not big into Mass Effect, and hasn't even played ME3 yet. He took the whole "concern over the precedent set in the gaming industry by changing the ending/artistic integrity" angle. I basically told him, "Dude, my sister is an artist, and we've been to many art galleries together. Some stuff is hideously ugly, but hey, it's art! Just because it's art doesn't mean it's good." That got him thinking. Lol.

I just hope they can repair some of the damage. Already, Mass Effect has gained a general reputation of being "the game with the bad ending." That's what I hear people say wherever I go, from word on the street to Phoenix Comic Con. It's really sad...this is still my favorite sci-fi franchise, and I never thought in a million years this would happen.

Oh s***! I think I understand the meaning of the synthesis ending in ME3! Implications unpleasant...

So has this thread derailed from a "This is great news" thread into a "Bileware sucks" thread and a "Endings suck" hate thread yet?

I think it's more of a "this might be good news but not so sure" thread at this point.

It will probably degenerate into "WORST NEWS EVAR" at some point.

In a sense, yes.

Just as Pandemic and Westwood before them. The cycle has repeated itself more than you can imagine.

Yes but this EC could stop the Cycle. There is still hope.

Exactly, why I keep on coming here and why I still go to HTL.

You have a choice.  More than you know.
  • Destroy - You can choose to Destroy EA.  But you will also destroy all subsidiaries (Maxis) of EA.  Even you are partly made of EA.  By filing this injunction, harness the power of the Crucible to become a legal force to temporarily delay the cycle.
  • Control - You can choose to Control EA.  If you ascend this staircase to the executive suite, you shall harness the power of the chair of CEO, but you will lose everything you have.
  • Synthesis - Add BioWare's energy to the Crucible. You can merge Gamers with EA.  A chain reaction where developers and gamers become one.  You create a new symbiosis -- a new marketplace.
I -- don't know.

Well, for all we know he could be referring to the 45455th multiplayer DLC where you can play as husk Kai Leng.

Not holding my breath, but I'm certainly hopeful.

How many times have we been promised something special only to get disappointed? Does no one remember the debacle of the femShep poll announcement?

"Hey, we have something awesome that ALL Shepards will love! onlyifyouplayasafemshep(andmaybenoteventhen)"

Or the BioWare Bazaar? Or the February 11th, 2011 announcement regarding Dragon Age 2? Or that one panel where no one was allowed to ask any questions about the end of the game? Or the fact that multiplayer was forced into the game despite the majority of players not wanting it for fear that it would affect the single player experience (which it has) after they had lead people to believe that there would be no MP in teh game at all?

Sorry, but I think I'm going to maintain a healthy dose of skepticism regarding this upcoming 'show.' No offense is intended towards Mr. Gamble at all, as he is merely the messenger.

This is all the more reason why they should strive to impress us with this announcement.  Or we could go with the alternative in which they just explain the ending in the EC without IT.  If I am living by that logic, I can go on believing that I'll just smash through the gates of Heaven with a Barbarian Axe and Knock God out as I steal his throne and then proclaim the Universe to be mine.  It makes about as much sense as that.

Damn it I was hoping Bioware would keep the June EC release. Now it seems it would be either July or later.

As long as it takes at this stage, they have much to lose if this goes south

A month. A month and maybe Mass Effect 3 won't leave such a bad taste in my mouth. Just one more month. Come on, BioWare, don't fail me now.

This. So very much....

As for the EC, I think they'll release it around GamesCom. Earlier, if they want people to comment on it at GamesCom, later if they don't want that.

They still haven't given the rest of the world that replacement for the Bazaar, have they? :bandit: My god, that was bad. All those 'I used to a member of the community, now I am just a (place nation)'-banners, awful sight to see.
