I was asleep during the second half and next 30 minutes ... so I didn't miss anything.
Poor Ronaldo didn't even have the chance to shoot in the penalty

That was such a boring game, IMO.

There was a big hooha about Ronaldo not taking a penalty in the BBC studio; with Shearer saying he should have taken one earlier.
Funny thing is...I distinctly remember a documentary, probably by the BBC, which went into the whole issue of England taking penalties quite a few years ago. During that documentary it turns out that at that time, only the Netherlands were worse at penalties than England with claims that even a group of grandmothers could have beaten the Netherlands on penalties.
The documentary also covered the psychological aspect of penalty taking, and it was suggested that your best penalty taker should go last with the least confident going first. I think you can see the logic behind that thought: the last penalty taker is under the most pressure and must perform, hence the need for your best to go last.
I think Portugal probably had something similar in mind. Problem is...that strategy also requires the other team taking such an approach. If they don't then...well....we've seen what can happen tonight.

I wanted to update the scored right after the match, but somewhere during the second half I fell asleep only to wake up this morning..
Van Marwijk quit, it's probably for the best, he is a good coach but not for this national team..
Funny thing: only last week he wanted to stay and said that he lost his faith in Heitinga, Huntelaar and V/d Vaart
Ego dictates that the best players takes the first penalty, he want to show everybody how it's done, psychology dictates that the least confident players should not take the last penalties. In my opinion: let a good player take the first one because he will most likely score which results in a great boost of morale, if a less confident player takes the first penalty and he misses, morales for everybody (except people with the confidence of the Hair Dude) will be down. The next few doens't really matter, as long as a confident player takes the last one, because another might give in to the pressureOBakaSama wrote...
On penalties: I think players tend to be of the 'best goes first' mentality as exhibited by Shearer. For them it was very much the epitome of stupidity that Ronaldo....hm....maybe we should start calling 'the Hair Dude'....went first; and that seems to their thought, that the best penalty taker goes first to set the tone (which seems to run the risk that less able takers won't measure up to the standard set; though I guess this allows the 'better' player to then blame the others for not living up to their standards).
Van Marwijk having faith is different to their desire to continue coaching, or whether they were removed from the position (haven't caught up on the news yet). Given the expectations though it does seem like a bad tournament for them, and not surprised he is no longer in charge of the national team.
Ah....football politics....so....how many fines did UEFA dish out during this tournament?
