Why won't you play... Gold Difficulty (Or Silver, for those Bronze-only players) [Or Lower Difficulty, for Gold Players]

I take things way too easy, so you'll see me casually strolling and shooting left and right all the time. While people go all out trying outdo each other on the kill count, i'm just trying to finnish the wave, complete the objective or just keep everyone alive. It's kind of why i like playing the support role. So i just play in bronze all the time, so that my procrastinating doesn't ruin the other players experience with the game. Plus i like helping the new guys learn the ropes of the game as well

Can be useful. I played a gold match the other day where someone lagged too badly to do anything - or be killed. He was surrounded by banshees and brutes unable to touch him though which made the whole thing rather easy for the rest of us (until he timed out altogether).Midou-Kun wrote...
Morbid fear of debilitating lag. It's not a problem on bronze, can be handled if you play carefully on silver but devastating on gold. I'd love to play more gold games, but I always seem to get connected to servers where I can see enemies on one part of the map and then they shoot me from a totally different place.

I play BRONZE with characters up to about level 16 and with characters that I 'enjoy less'. For me, non-Krogan Vanguards, Soldiers, and some races that don't fit my play style.
On SILVER I play my favourite characters (mostly Asari, Quarians, Krogan) between levels 16-20.
On GOLD I tend to only play 'when I have to' for an Operation, and yes, Salarian Engineer on Firebase White / Geth. I don't rule out more 'proper' Gold games, but they would be with my favourite characters on Level 20, with equipment, and I would be 'on mic' to work with the rest of the team. It would certainly be when I had a chunk of free time, not for when I just wanted to 'shoot bad guys/creatures' for 20-30 minutes.

Gold needs overload and energy drain too much, really. Biotic Explosions are also a must, but those are somewhat harder to come by.

Bronze : Just having fun, casually walking around shooting stuff in the face or watching my team shoot stuff in the face.
Silver : Challenging for me, especially on wave 11, when it's no holds barred, crap hits the fan, brutes and banshees all over.
Gold : Not really worth the time and effort for the priiiize.

Seconed. If anything gold gives an actual use for those abilities - on bronze and silver its faster to just blast through shields, where on gold you can benefit from working around them. But perhaps that what you mean by it needing those abilities too much?
And for biotics, they are nice yes, but if anyhting they are easyer to come by, as everything is not 1-shot as soon as it peeks around a corner, allowing the caster to set up the explosion instead of only warping the mob.

Haven't really had the inklings to nose around the random match world.
The other day I switched it to silver, and she didn't even notice until wave 5 when the prime showed up. Guess that means she's getting better!

This minus the fail fear (I'm okay with failing, have failed on wave 3 PUG Bronze before)jrod512ATX wrote...
I can solo bronze, a lot of us can on here - it's a breeze.
Silver is the new Bronze for me though at times it offers a good challenge.
Gold to me is difficult and into a difficult match I'm going to take lvl III equipment - ammo, weapon bonus, etc. Why don't I play because I'm afraid I'll get disconnected, glitched (frozen) or that we'll fail...
Just earlier this evening with exactly 1 second left on extraction the game froze...and it just kills me to think that I invested all that time and equipment for nothing. When that happens I'm like "this is exactly why I don't play on Gold."
I think I actually tempt the DC/glitch gods when I start ticking those level III tickboxes. I have yet to finish a game where I tick all three.

I play silver with anybody else or to try out new builds. I rarely use my mic and I get WAY to overconfident at times which results in shameful death... Silver has it's moments of challenges and is not very rewarding.
I never play bronze. Total waste of time. If you ever see me playing bronze, it's because I'm playing with a level 1 character that I am not comfortable with or I've been dumped in it asking for silver in a quick game request. Bronze is not rewarding and not challenging. IMO, bronze should give 20 000 credits (at least what it takes to buy a veteran pack)

I usually play soldier (bf3 for carnage!) and have just started using a geth infiltrator for the first time. Really enjoying that, especially one shot kills on phantoms. With these two I generally end top or second.
I just wouldn't want to let the squad down on silver or gold.

Agreed. On gold you cannot just shoot your way out of two primes/banshees/whatever coming at you. BE/TB are required (or a Cobra in dire circumcstances). A good team would have one warp/reave/whatever and one reave/throw/whatever to minimize the timing and maximize damage over time. Or one teammate would focus on one prime and the other teammate on the other prime so as to take them down fast.
But at the end of the day, it is a game and just have fun. When you feel the need to push, try gold. The main reason I say this is due to the different play styles. If you stick to bronze too much, you'll develop some bad habits that just won't/can't work on gold (even silver to a lesser degree). And if all you play is gold, bronze will seem quite boring (when it can be more fun) since you tend to either stay in cover or move about with a team. Also, when you want to relax and not have a panic attack on extraction due to 20 phantoms rushing you from all sides, play at lower levels.
And if you ever want help/pointers/someone to play with, I'm on Xbox. Gamertag is same as username here. We'll be happy to show you the ropes and provide advice (as best we know at least).
And, most importantly, I promise it will be "elitist free".

Maybe I'm just shameless when it comes to relative online anonymity, but once I found Silver comfortable, I just tried Gold. No one kicked me because of my Carnifex I or whatever. Not all matches resulted in Extraction at first, but I just kept on going. When playing Random, there are very few chances that you will run into the same people so, even if I embarrassed myself, I figured that I probably wouldn't see these people again. Or if I did, then they probably wouldn't remember my ID.
If you enjoy Silver, then that's perfectly fine. But if you stick to Silver only because you don't want to be judged in Gold, then I just find that unfortunate. To each their own, though, I know.

Very curtious of you and it is appreciated. Your best bet is to use your mic in the lobby to let the other players know you are newer to silver or gold. If they are worth playing with, they will provide advice, cover your back and help you out if you go down. If they don't, they probably are not worth playing with anyway.
I've played with some of the top players in the world (per leaderboards at least, but if you think about it a N7 20 could rock if all he/she uses is one character and is awesome with it). They were all very friendly, helpful and you learn a lot how to play (e.g. Way back when, I didn't know that Disruptor rounds or ED would take away another player's BE setup, and here I though I was helping...see?).

I wonder if all this talk of perceived Gold elitism comes from reading these boards rather than actually trying Gold (besides FBWGG)?

Honestly, yes, at least in public gold during the "Full Extraction on Gold" Operation. Also, that's the only time I ran Gold Public Quick Match search. It's probably the timing, I guess.
Not counting Gold matches that my successful Silver Match switched up, I didn't do Gold since that once.

I wouldn't mind seeing a harder difficulty added. I would probably have to make some friends if they did add it.

Most of my friends are too new to the game for Gold.
I still don't have any of my Gold-viable weapons at level X. I don't want to be a hindrance.
Silver can already be challenging enough. The frustrating things about each faction, like Banshees in general and the geth stagger combos, are only multiplied on Gold.

It's all about money. There's no real challenge in this game aside from overcoming the lag. All higher difficulties do is force you to shoot enemies longer. That's it. It's not some monumental achievement to beat, it just takes more time and bullets/powers. It all comes down to the amount of money you want to get for the time you're playing. If you want the best gear, then you'll need to play Silver and Gold to get that gear. If all you're doing is playing to keep that ridiculous Galaxy at War screen between 100-95, then just play Bronze.
Yes,shoot enemies longer....Which then means that there are more enemies at once on the map.And let's not forget that THEY shoot YOU around 3x times stronger......
But anyways,I'll get on topic: I like challenges, and it's more rewarding...That's why I mostly play on GOLDI sometimes play SILVER,to warm up.
The only time I play on BRONZE is when I try out new builds.

Generally I'll still pick up a gold farming session, simply to get another PSP before I stop playing, but yeah, Now I prefer silver.. even though Silver's too easy.
Makes me wish there were no difficulties, simply endless amounts of waves, and you lasted as long as you lasted.. a good group got far, a bad one.. not so far. Keeping objectives to every wave, and just try to get there.
People would naturally get to some waves that were just too hard.. and people would also rather stick around with a good group, and not duke out simply because someone's "killstealing".
