This topic makes me sad. So many people not willing to play or even try Gold for many reasons.

I agree.

Some do give perfectly valid reasons to not try though, and I respect that. If you don't feel ready, whether it be due to equipment, experience, or skill, that is fine.

The other reasons given, though (e.g. possibility of instant-kick, jerk microphone users, being useless against a Gold Cannibal, etc), that makes me sad.

I just wanted to post some words of encouragement.

I used to only play bronze when my very first game was a failed silver match. From then on, I played bronze exclusively until I felt confident enough to challenge myself. Then, for the longest time, I only played silver. I played silver, again, until I felt confident enough to challenge myself again.

I then made the leap to gold. I met some good players and some bad ones. I don't just mean in terms of ability, but in terms of personality. I don't tolerate BS in general and I want my games to be fun and dealing with elitism is not fun for me. I tend to shy away from being chatty and will only speak up when I feel it matters in-game or if the conversation is constructive.

What matters for me is the fun aspect of the game. I tried the leap to gold a few times and retreated back to silver due to failures and bad experiences with some other players.

Over time, what happened for me though is that I started getting comfortable with gold. It suddenly was not so hard and quickly realized that there were actually some decent people to play with that were more like me than there were the people I wanted to stay away from.

What was key here for me was gaining the experience that I needed to feel confident and to actually be capable of pulling off gold.

That said, I still go back to silver sometimes when I don't feel like playing longer matches due to other things like, erm, life!

So in the end, try gold once you are confident and have the time. There are good players out there that are not elitists. Hit me up if you ever want to play!

I hate Gold myself.
  • It's too inflexible.  The majority of the weapons are useless or have greatly diminished usefulness thanks to the questionable balancing systems.  Characters are more limited into "optimal" builds whereas random builds are a suicide wish.
  • The elitism.  I don't care if you're the best player on the planet, if you're going to go around criticising everyone's moves and putting them down for not abusing the Carnifex of whatever weapon you have a hard-on for then I see no reason to play with you or keep you in the team.  I've run into the arrogant and overbearing elitists far too often.

I don't find many issues on Silver.  Most of the weapons can be used and used effectively, you get more leeway to play around with character builds without the game seemingly punishing you, and I've yet to see an elitist ****** on Silver.

I only play public games, and in those gold and silver teams both are too much of a crap shoot. Plus the games themselves take too long on the higher settings (versus a public bronze usually under 15 min), the chance of success with either isn't great, and I find gold especially to be much more stressful than it is fun.

Love to play silver matches due to a constant challange without feeling overwhelmed. I've just begun to play bronze matches when my friends aren't on so the idiocy of randoms doesn't affect my ability to enjoy the game. That being said every once in a while my friends and I like to enjoy the thrill of Gold. My rule of thumb is if you don't feel comfortable playing on a certain level(bronze, silver, gold)then don't. You and the people playing with you will appreciate it.

I mostly play gold because I find the other difficulties way to easy.

I've played some Gold and the times I have done it on unknown unknown I did really well and even solo'd a few of the waves when all teammates died. Even so I stick to silver and bronze because it allows me to fool around using silly setups for kicks. Gold you have to be super cereal and use only the best stuff. I'd much rather use weaker weapons that are fun than all the OP stuff all the time. I barely use my black widow anymore, I have too much fun with guns like the incisor and valiant which are not so great for gold but work well in silver.

I play gold because I like the challenge and the credit return.
Bronze is too easy and gives you no return on your time with exp or credits.
Silver is fun but still takes too long for what you get in return. Gold can be completed in close to the same time and you get twice the credits and considerably more exp.

I've been trying to upgrade my gear and ultra-rare weapons. But with my lousy luck I spend a whole wack of credits and get nothing but character cards, so gold is really the only option I have...other than spending real cash.

I enjoy both Gold and Silver. Gold is fun because when you successfully extract it feels like you work together and did something great as a team (well outside of fwgg farming). Silvers just more of the fun of causal play or when I want to test out some build ideas. Bronze? I can't play. It seems too easy to me. I have almost fallen asleep before trying to play on Bronze. Also I get little satisfaction from it. It's like beating a race where your opponents are potted plants. At least that's how it feels to me anyway.

I find it funny that if you pop say at the start of wave four on Gold you made just as much credits as a Bronze game in under six minutes. Get past wave six it's Silver level credits in about fifteen.

Credits.

Once you start clearing gold without problems, it's hard to convince yourself to go down a skill level.

You make half the credits, but you only save a couple minutes.

true - the problem I run into though is if you dont finish the 3 objective wave and you lose, you might as well have finished an entire silver run

I tend to stick to silver now that most of my friends have moved on from mass effect. I am, to an extent, a gold quality player. However, it requires that I have a good team to support. I'm not good enough to carry a team or weakened team through gold.

I play bronze when i'm a level 1-10, maybe an 8 depending on the class. After that I stick to silver, and generally have alot of fun playing those matches, it's intense but not too intense, and honestly with the exception of those rare bad days (we all have them) the teamwork is usually pretty good and the ego's aren't so out of control that it becomes annoying. People on the mic usually talk amongst themselves and don't really bark out orders. I've done a few gold matches, and they've been o.k. but honestly I don't see myself sticking to them for long, just too much hassle for me. I've been honing my skills by resetting all classes and then rebuilding them one at a time, and i've become pretty good with asari, and even with infiltrators, but I love my batarian soldier. It's not an N7 thing for me, i'm about 600 but i'll play with anyone, at least one round and if they die ALL the time then I might skip out t he next round. All in all I do it for the fun.

If half of the people who respond here tried gold more the community would be better. Your all stating valid reasons but your also the players people want to play with.

Anyway add me if your interested in running gold GT El Chupacabra49. I just want to find people with a mic a sense of teamwork and some decent skill which can be hard to come by in pubs.

I can solo bronze, a lot of us can on here - it's a breeze.

Whoa, here I went solo bronze 3 times and just died flat out everytime, once at 6 and twice at 3, so I'd be really curious to hear how it can be done. Now, I got Reapers twice, so that may have had something with it and the other thing is that maybe Engineer/Infiltrator is the best class to go solo with?

Spot on. I've done it twice with my Geth Engineer, once with my Quarian Male Infiltrator. You just have to careful with the objectives. Try to lead all the enemies away from them, then double back at full speed to get them done. You'll have a turret to throw down with caps and to help you out with circle hacks and the time is much faster alone. Infiltrators... just cloak and cap.

Caps?

Capping. The 4 objective hacks. Forgot to mention, you should also have a full supply of medi-gels, cobra missiles, ops survival packs. When things get hairy in later levels. Bronze may be easy mode for some people, but just one grenade can take you out faster than you can say, "Oh, crap!"

I mostly play on silver, and don't consider my solo skills that great, but I can finish out waves as long as I don't do something stupid! I run into enough other good players that we extract the majority of the time. I dabbled with gold a while ago with a couple of friends I made playing on silver, but they don't play anymore it seems, so I pulled back. The last challenges on gold pushed me to try again, but with randoms, and it wasn't too bad. I didn't feel like I was being carried, but I still have things to learn there. I don't often run into people that communicate at any level, so I find it tough to make more friends right now.

I have started to dabble in soloing bronze to work on my swivel-head skills and situational awareness.. I'm surprising myself a bit with how far I'm getting, but I always seem to try at a time when my wife or daughter will interrupt. Maybe just giving myself an "out", hehe. I made it to the end of wave 9 on reactor against reapers with a QMI - just had a ravages left when I had to suicide because of something daughter-critical.

I'm not stingy with consumables, but to push my skills, I try not to use them much in silver. Except medial because I get myself in trouble picking people up too often.
