I'm left with only one question: how much, exactly, is a metric F-ton?

Seriously, great guide & video. You have inspired me to try a character I've thus far completely ignored.

I really dislike the Reegar thing, but I've been using Talon on this class with moderate success. The Fitness tree seems to be broken, and I have a feeling the shield/health gate does not work properly either (PC). I do enjoy lash/smash though.

Good guide AreleX. Now, where's the all Phoenix run on Jade? :D

Did you test that? Because I did a fair amount of testing on both Phoenix characters, and at least the shields and shield gate were working fine. Damage reduction after Charge also works the same as with any other Vanguard.

I really wish that someone would do some extensive testing on this and put it on vid, so we can get to the bottom of this broken fitness thing.

Somebody did, a while ago.  The result, of that one anyway, showed there is nothing wrong with the Phoenix's fitness.  I'll try to find it.

edit: this one

I know about the vid. The guy who made it, did it to support my clamis in one of the threads a while back. I have done the same kind of tests against various factions, various enemy attacks on various difficulties. And there was no indication that anything is wrong with the Fitness tree. Shield capacity is the same as with other characters (working as intended), shield gate is working fine, and I can say for certain that health gate is working fine as well (I took exrta notice when I was playing today). So that leaves us with health.
I think someone should do some extensive testing and provide more hard data and facts, and then put it on vid. So that we can either put this myth behind us, or to see where the actual problem is (if there is one).

EDIT: He recorded another vid, testing the Adept this time. Same result. click

question... are these builds gold worthy? cause the times ive played this character on silver he hits the floor more then he kills...

also why put any points into the fitness tree when its bugged... he has the exact same health and shields as the base male human vanguard...

im just trying my hardest to find a way to use this guy... but for the most part seems like only a novaguard and a Kroguard are valid builds for gold...

not trying to bash your fav character just trying to learn... cause he is an awesome character...

I haven't tried this yet, but the scorpion could be awesome. Use the AoE stagger to set up your slams. It would have to be leveled up past V though :/

In response to WickedTruth check this out...

Alot of people claim that the cerberus vanguard sucks.. This is a false statement and the reason that most who have trouble with him do is either in the build or the playstyle. This character is NOT to be played at all like the novagaurd or kroguard. However he can dish out damage on par with them when built correctly, and imo even more than the novaguard to bosses. With the build ill be posting shortly I've had little trouble with anything and can hold down doorways, wreak havoc on mobs and crowd control in battle quite well. Here is what I'm working with:

Cerberus Vanguard

Biotic Charge: 3 points.
Should only be used as a fail safe to replenish shields. This character is meant to be played using walls and whatever else you can find as cover while strategicly navigating the battlefield. Only rank this to 6 if you absolutely do not want lash. If you go 6 then go radius (4), power synergy (5), barrier (6).

Smash: 6 points. biotic combo (4), force and damage (5), impact radius (6).
Biotic combo is self explanatory. Between you and your teams ability to set-up BE's, you should see s'plosions quite often. force and damage >recharge and impact radius is for better crowd control. Radius is more beneficial to your and the team where as armor damage is better for raw damage output.

Lash: 6 points. either or (4), DoT (5), and shield penetration (6).
Apparently there is alot of controversy about this power being used on the vanguard and i'd like to clear that up. This power is incredibly useful especially when you rank to 6. Whiping an enemy and momentarily putting them on there back or worse (thrown of screen) is always nice. Rank 6 allows you to do this to gaurdians, marauders, hunter's, cent's, rocket troopers and even phantoms. The DoT effect is very handy and this is easily a BE set-up for both smash and/or charge. It can be a lifesaver to both you and the team. Nuff said

Phoenix Training: 5 points. damage and capacity (4), power damage and force (5).
You will eventually hardly use your weapon so you want as much power damage and force as possible. Also lower weight is always nice.

Fitness: 6 points. health and shields (4), martial artist (5), power synergy (6).
Although you do not have nova, the phoenix vanguard does have an AWESOME heavy melee power. It's AoE and has a decent radius (could be bigger IMO). It does pretty nice damage too if spec'd for melee damage and has a stagger effect. martial artist and power synergy is taken over the health and shields because the impact from the too is far more beneficial to you than the extra health and shield bonuses. The rank 4 durability is taken to compensate for this.

Weapons: You want 200% recharge or as close to it as possible. My recommendation is a pistol. I use either the paladin or the phalanx. It's also possible to use the avenger and get 200% rech. Mods will be between the piercing mod, extended barrel and melee stunner.

Strategy: 1st off, biotic charge is meant only for defense and replenishing shields thats why its only rank 3. Dont go crazy and charge in to big mobs or you will die. Smash and heavy melee is your bread and butter. Use these powers to dish out the big numbers as they both can hit through walls and obstacles. Smash does have a long animation so behind cover is the best way to use it. Using the heavy melee in the middle of the animation is the best way to mitigate this, Also note that you can move around a bit and change your impact area during smash. It's dishes the most damage out of any biotic power in the game but make sure you use it smartly. Lash is how you deal with the troublesome enemies and from being overwhelmed. With quick recharge this power is usually ready to go and works on anything except the heavy bosses e: (atlas, prime, banshee, ravager and for some reason pyro's). An enemy on its back isnt shooting at anyone which is always good. And yes it does work on phantoms. Throughout fights you want to be in cover most of the time and either bring the enemies to you with lash or wait on them. smash and melee go through walls so abuse that. Cerberus and Reapers should be pretty easy for this character, Geth can present a problem with there swarm abilities. I've tested this build on bronze, silver and gold. bronze and silver are both fairly easy. For gold just be careful and try to stick with your team when as much as possible. If not the top I finish in 2nd in any match on silver. The ability to fight at range or close up makes you a valuable team asset, and my ability to crowd control is extremly useful. For gold matches I play a bit more conservatively and focus on protecting the squad so I usually finish around 3rd. I hope you'll try this build and tell me your opinions. Oh and I am not taken down much on silver. Especially if the team stays together.

"Dont be that guy who goes down on the other side of the map during a hack or extraction for trying to go rambo." Your team will hate you for this.

Somehow I didnt read AreleX's post before writing mines. Nice work though. I've done extensive work with this class as well and its by far my favorite. The versatility of it is just crazy. I especially like the line that says It hits like a ******* Mack Truck bc thats my gamer tag. "Tha Mack Truck". What do you think of my build?

doesn't even matter, playing a vanguard with zero points in fitness will put some hair on your chest! some bass in your voice!

Is level 6 lash mostly to deal with phantoms and geth? Phantoms don't seem too terrible without it with smart use of walls and smash, but I'm having huge problems finding the right way to engage against geth without it. Rocket troopers and pyros are no fun :(

Interesting video, I have always felt like a glass cannon with that class. I'm interested to see how you use lash well in your next video. I don't mean to sound like the guy who cries about the Reegar, but it can certainly bring a boost of power to a class like this.

There's no question lash synergies well with a Justicar, I'm just interested to see what you do against a prime with a non biotic next to you. Can you smash then charge for explosions? Pyros also seem like they'd cause grief like they do for Cerberus adept.

lash 6 makes a joke out of cerberus, ruins rocket troopers and hunters, 1 shots husks, and sets marauders and cannibals up perfectly to be killed.

think i'll do a geth vid next, since cerb is by far the easiest with this class.

smash + charge is a detonation.

smash does a TON of damage on its own, and then you get to follow that up with a BE.

it's just...muah, mirifique.

I read the guide completely through. I watched the video. I rebuilt my Cerby Vanguard to try out all I learned. I proceeded to die after every Smash I attempted. I do not get this playstyle. I do the canceling, as soon as I'm done rolling my shields are gone and by the time I can charge I'm down a few blocks of health. Then when the game decides I'm allowed to charge I'm already downed. On Silver.

If I focus on Lashing mooks like my Adept does, I do fine. If I charge and then unload with my weapon, I do fine. Every time I go for a Smash, even against one enemy, I eat turf. I don't know what I'm missing but I'm fairly sure Smash is the weak link here. It does a lot of damage.. sometimes. When it wants you to. But I just die way too often for it to be worth it.

I play on 360. The weird thing is I use Smash pretty decently on my Adept, but that's because it's second to Lash in my playstyle. I'll use Smash if an opportunity arises, while what I took from the guide was Smash should be the star of the show. I think it was a well put together guide but it's hard to wrap my head around using the power as instructed, even with canceling it into rolls and melee. I think it's just not really for me.

like i said in the guide, man. give it a chance. you have to build up situational awareness and a familiarity on when it's best to use it. after that, you'll be unstoppable. the vanguard is a completely different beast than the adept, despite sharing every power except one, so you have to change your playstyle accordingly.

The guy above me asked if it was gold viable.  I was pointing out that the vid was a gold run.  He also said that fitness was bugged, and there are vids floating around that shows the fitness tree works.  There are plenty of reasons to not take ti though!  I wasn't trying to call you a sucker, sorry if it sounded inflammatory!

are the vids on pc? because it seems pc players, even respectable ones like zhhk and kronner (ok, maybe not kronner) are reporting that it doesn't work. seems fine on 360.
