Smash adds a floating effect to valid targets. Armored foes are not those. Just like Pull and other Lift style biotic Shields and Armor negate the effect. Personally I don't bank on getting biotic explosions off this class anyways, at least not without another biotic on the team. Smash itself is a fairly powerful move
I use Charge as a close range, quick shield gate re-up. Not an attack method. This is slightly better IMO then the Adept as shield gate is your life in Gold. Not necessarily how much shield you have. Again it's not an attack method. It is a heal/transportation tool and should not be use to take you to a pack of enemies.
Thanks I think I have a better understanding of it now. But I'm still convinced I smash->lash detonated phantoms a bunch of times while their barriers were still up. And as AreleX said,

lash can only detonate on enemies without armor, yes
Which doesnt include shields or barriers.
So when facing a boss like a banshee, it's faster to just smash? Not Lash->Smash detonate? Cause I usually detonate once or twice when fighting them. Usually priming with Lash when they're just out of range of Smash.
Yeah I agree with the use of charge. And I play pretty much the exact same way you described. Using charge only as life line in emergencies. However there are times when the only thing you can do to live is charge. Like if you get flanked or something. But sometimes you die anyways because you only get 50% shield and don't stagger 3 enemies, which is huge. Sure I'd rather have charge over singularity, that wasn't really my point though. I want to try a different build and style of play more like in AreleX's video. So the whole conversation about playing with lvl 3 charge is irrelevant. Especially since each of the builds he's posted has charge at 6. I really appreciate your input though. Thanks a bunch.
