"Failed to detect supported graphics card", but I've already completed the game once

This, I find somewhat mystifying: I've completed the game once already (yes, on this computer), but now the game fails to detect a supported graphics card. The character creator works just fine, as does everything else. I've updated drivers, reinstalled the game and offered up sacrifices to my cruel and capricious deity, all to no avail.

Speak to me, mystic sages! I'll be your friend...

I have never heard of that happening without an intervening disturbance.  I also have never heard of any real video device that could actually finish the game, if it was in the class that the filter is intended to catch.  You don;t have a sibling who also has a PC, do you?  A smart aleck brother willing to go to the trouble of swapping cards and redoing all of the video drivers?

That filter is normally detecting various Intel video chips and pre-Dx9 (elderly) cards, but it queries the Dx9 routines, and can be corrupted by a bad Dx9 install, bad drivers, or a bad game install.  Do you have any viruses or other malware that may have screwed up any of the three?

I do have a veritable darkspawn horde of siblings, but I live alone in a different country to them, which makes their intervention seem unlikely without the aid of supernatural patronage (hmm...).

My anti-virus software has found nothing, save the relentless, frustrated tears of its owner.

If it's not integrated to the motherboard you could try to remove the card and plug it in again.

Mm, but my competence with technology is such that one of my brothers forbids me from entering the same room as his PS3. When I'm within ten metres, it crashes.

That's the problem then. You emmit some kind of electromagnetic field that prevents your video card from sending information to your computer. It tries to connect to your brain instead. When you get a pixelated vision, try hitting the side of your head with a hammer. When you regain consciousness it should work.

ps. that was just my way of telling I have no idea what the problem is. sorry

Depending on the AV program in use, not all of them deal with badly behaved advertising malware (SpyBots) that can screw up PCs as badly or worse than a virus can.  You need to run scans with a couple of anti-advertising scanners, such as SpyBot Search and Destroy.

At least run the 3D graphical tests in DxDiag to see if perhaps your video card has begin to fail.

[Reinoc] Your sensible suggestion has been pooh-poohed by my doctor, for some reason. He said that it was a stupid thing to do and if I do it again I can't claim it on my insurance. I think he's just jealous that he didn't think of the idea first. One question: how do I get rid of the red tint I can see on everything now?

[Gorath] I shall attempt these things, mighty sage! Thankyou for your suggestions, and I shall inform you of the results (you lucky, lucky thing).

Mighty sage, your words have converted the fail of my computer into copious win! The DxDragon showed healthiness, but the Search and Destroy pixies searched and destroyed many naughty things that had invaded my computron.

Admittedly, the game is a little jerky and the downloadable content seems... reluctant to return to my system, but hopefully that will sort itself out. I shall return to the aether if further advice is needed!

Thanks again. =)

Oh noes! Now the downloadable content has all disappeared! O_O

Methinks the same pixies who delivered my salvation have wrought a terrible cost, for the content does not appear under potential downloadables, as stuff that I am downloading or as stuff that is installed, and none of my saved games want to start without my delicious downloadables.

What's a wizard to do, sages?

Truly thou art in a spot of bother.. May one be so kind as to suggest that you run the 'configure' option from the load screen then select the arcane 'repair' button then 'add firewall exception' then 'clear download cache', select file then exit.

Hopefully this will aid thy Arcane brother.

you can manually reinstall the DLC from the DLC troubleshooting thread (section 4 if I'm remembering correctly)

Oh, sweet Jiron, may the pixies never befall the powers of your cunning. I shall go there forthwhith and undo this terrible mischief!

My thanks!
