Aaryn Flynn @AarynFlynn

During our @EAPlay rehearsal for Mass Effect: Andromeda, I was briefly played by a tipped over stepladder.

"Contestant #2, if YOU could be any tool in a garage, which would you be?" "I'd be a 6 foot stepladder."

yes, but that's like flying to Andromeda, being the first person to ever meet new intelligent life and expect Google Translate to translate

Got a source for that?  Though it's in September (which is technically Autumn, if a little early), and I think they announced Trespasser at last year's, I think they'll wait a little longer.

Drat, I asked an - admittedly fairly silly - question on Twitter earlier, but I forgot to tag @GambleMike along with @macwalterslives. Ah well, I get the feeling most people who aren't me wouldn't care over-much about the answer.

And yet, I expect that is exactly what will happen. The translator tool will figure it all out for us.

My guess is that we'll find some kind of galactic rosetta stone equivalent relatively early on to give the translators something to work with. Ultimately, they're gonna have to hand wave it one way or another, 'cause otherwise we won't be able to talk to any of the new species we encounter without years of painstaking work, assuming understanding is even possible.

I'm still hoping we get at least one 'Darmok' questline, though. Star Trek is one of the oldest and most famous examples of the 'universal translator works on everything' phenomena - for good reason, as the show simply wouldn't work otherwise - and yet they still found a way to explore the fun dramatic potential inherent in the idea of having to work around the limitations of language to come to an understanding.

It'd get incredibly tiresome if every single first contact revolved around the concept, considering how often they're likely to come up in a game with a set-up like Andromeda's, but it's an idea worth doing at least once.

And miss all the big gaming conventions? I'm not sure about that. In fact, I expect we'll see something at Gamescom, even if not much.

Doesn't omnitool already translate stuff?

Yes, but it has an extremely thorough database of every language to work with, and hundreds of years of corrections and refinements. Expecting the omnitool's translator to be of any use in Andromeda would be like finding one of the uncontacted tribes here on Earth, and immediately handing them one of those pocket translators. Not only would the technology be completely alien to them, it also wouldn't do any good since their language isn't documented.

My guess is that we'll find some sort of language tutorial program equivalent to the one given to Samantha by Javik for use to help bring in subserviant races.

Maybe they resurrected Vigil. Homey deciphered human, krogan, turian, quarian, and asari languages in the timespan between when Shepard and crew landed on Ilos to when they showed up at its doorstep.

Somehow, the after EA PLAY tweets don't have the same hype impact as the pre EA Play ones.

Noam Chomsky theorizes a "Universal Grammar" that all human languages share. Had he lived to study alien languages, he may have found that it extends beyond life on Earth. That is to say that the languages of all sapient life in the galaxy and possibly the universe share the same basics of grammar and syntax and that any language, no matter how complex or dissimilar to our own, can be parsed in a matter of moments by what is essentially a miniature quantum computer you wear on your wrist.
