I'm 75% convinced that plan/reason why they are holding themselves back is the book.

Right after talking about MEA, Billy and Blar went on to praise Bethesda's Apple-like approach to reveals (short, intense marketing campaign before release). I think they're just adopting this style of marketing (which is a good thing IMO).

If they were adopting this approach, MEA wouldn't have been announced yet.  And likely wouldn't be until fall, at least.

 - Okay, while this might not be the best news for those of you wanting to create a steady stream of YT content, overall I think it's the best way to handle it. Show off the gameplay when it's nearly complete and not some vertical slice or marketing build with graphics and features which may not make it into the final game.

On the one hand I like this minimal approach. It keeps spoilers at bay and you can go into the game with truly fresh eyes. That's a great experience--for me.

On the other hand....it's boring.  Yes, I want to be entertained by a creative marketing campaign that draws me into the MEU. Put a little magic in it while we wait. It does not have to include showing a bunch on MEA footage and giving away info on that, but rather...organize some events with MEU at large themes. Do a..."Flash Mob" type event on the level of a street performance.  Something. It does not have to be all or nothing. Let's have some fun.

It is supposed to be fun, right?

It most accurately portrays my feelings on this model of advertising.

Yeah... complete game play is nice... but they could still do some detail reveals here and there...

*continues to wait semi-patiently*

The success of Fallout 4's marketing campaign wasn't known until well after MEA's announcement. But I think after it became clear, BioWare's marketing department starting changing their plans.

I'm willing to bet that going forward, the marketing for the other BioWare franchises will adopt an even closer-to-Bethesda approach.

Could one of you peeps with a twitter account ask if left handed or over the left shoulder will be an option?  I noticed in the e3 trailer this year, there's a scene with a brute like creature charging the player character.  And the gun is in the left hand, camera to the left of the body.  Now, it could just be a cinematic, or it could be like something in the division when you ADS you can switch the perspective.. but I'm hoping that you'll be able to define the handedness of your character.

Just really curious about this.

Then they should have stuck with the original plan for Mass Effect: Andromeda and implement the Bethesda approach with the next game.

Or better yet, not copy Bethesda's terrible approach to marketing.

I'm sure they put this scene on the trailer for a purpose. Everything in taht trailer is intentional. So you can assume safely that there will be this possibility. Besides, why wouldn't they put this on a shooter game nowadays? its probable so easy to implement and so many people will find it better. I believe there is no reason not to put it

MEA was already announced before Bethesda came out with the approach. They couldn't then unannounce it. But maybe they're going with the next closest thing.

Time to fulfill the stereotypical role of what a game developer does at their job all day for the next 3 hours. Time to play some #space

I agree, especially since they would have said something about the Secret IP or teased the next DA at EA Play, if they still used the old model. This is a far better approach. 5 months is more than enough time to generate hype. This way they can present a nearly finished game, not have a repeat of DAI (not that it's bad that some content ended up being cut, that's only natural in game development, but some people don't get that), and avoid wearing people out with marketing.

I'd take what they did with DAI over what they are doing with MEA any day.

I prefer the new approach over people creating multiple angry threads, because function X from the closed doors demo is missing from the final version. Besides, I've managed to get excited and bored by DAI multiple times before release. Getting info about Andromeda now is not going to change the fact that I'll have to wait ~8 months to play it.

This is correct, though I suspect the desire to talk about something else after ME3 was part of it;

The bun fight over Crestwood-gate was another part of it;

And the success of Bethesda's 'rule of one E3' was the third.

As has been said, they were already talking about it before it dawned that the game was still a fair way out.

In short, don't expect to hear much about DA4 until 6 months before. New IP the same.

Just so everyone's aware, Billy and Blar touched on this last month on their ProducerHax podcast. They said not to worry, there aren't any problems going on in MEA's development, and there is a plan / reason why they're holding off showing too much now.

                                                                                    <<<<<<<<<<(0)>>>>>>>>>>

Reason / Plan?

If  it's because of the book, as mentioned by Dalinne up thread, then it's an iffy proposition.

For one:

Bio is betting on a successful book launch to promote ME:A. How many books to be sold? how much time is given for the book to be read? How can the book hype the game?

For two:

There is little info and no hype about the book content and it's purpose.

For three:

It's all secrecy secrecy...  making potential players unaware of a possible background story to A and about the game in general (we have very little). How can secrecy about book and game promote anything?

At least Bio should promote the book as the "official" source for the ME:A background story which will hype the game that promotes the book... a perpetual promotional machine, if you wish. Instead, we have little. My take the book is all about the characters (or some) and their struggles to compete for the top jobs. Big deal. I cannot see the book about the individual Team characters arriving in the Helius cluster and their own hardships and then have Ryder recruit them.

What I do want is a story about how the ARKCON project came to be, its struggles to get approval and funding and the manpower and the recruitment drive. Was there a "boot" camp for "officers" to be? What was the political will? When did the Alliance clue Shep in? Was there a Scouting expedition prior to the main ARK launches? How is the Ryder family involved?

If there is a plan, it's a successful one. We can't critique it, as is BSN's due... LOL

everyone would agree with this because The marketing cost always 30 % or more of the game so if take the poliy to do less but better campaign like besthesda perhaps the game will profit of it.

it's just an idea but we will see with futur gamed but for me the best  policy is to release game when it's  ready ( like blizzard )

How come? The only downside of the ME:A strategy is that threads on this board are a bit dopey -- though it's not a sure thing that they'd be less dopey if there was more information released.

The main reason is because then we would get an actual feel of the game, other than just hearing about it in the vaguest of terminology like Bioware is using. That feel will do a lot to generate hype, and be able to draw those who are on the fence in.

This is one thing, that if they did it, I couldn't stand.  BioWare made all of their games (or most of them) fully story complete.  You didn't have to read any other source material to have a firm grasp on things that were going on in the universe.  That can't be said for any other AAA game development house that I'm aware of.

It can, but it gives less time for hype to spread via word of mouth and other means.

Meanwhile what objective beneficial reasons are there to keep not providing information and waiting for some obscure day?

Hmm, one thing I wonder: will the player characters be set with one default voice like Shepard and Hawke or will we be able to choose their default voices again like in DA:I?
