And if ME:N isn't the best game ever made, we'll just blame everything on Jos.
I am watching you.
Actually, it took a lot more game play time to save everyone - and you also had to understand the "Hold the line" defense mechanics in order to save everyone.
Thank BSN for that one - Occam's Razor for one and a few others. Without them I would have never figured it out because the devs never explained it ANYWHERE in the game. Their hard work made our Perfect Possible Ending possible.
How so? The roles that needed filling got called out as specifically requiring a specialist in those fields, and over the course of the game you get to know your squadmates, so you would understand where each of their specialties lies.
That too. Just curious Jos, if you did work on the Suicide Mission, did it ever strike you that it might not be as suicidal as it was made out to be? Maybe too easy for completionists? I understand that most people will lose squad mates by the simple fact that they are not 100% dedicated to the game (miss some loyalty missions, don't install upgrades, etc.), but for those of us who did, did you feel it was lacking in the ''suicide'' aspect, since it was relatively easy to save everyone if you just did a completionist playthrough?
I did not work on the Suicide Mission, but it maybe feeling easy as a completionist is an inherent problem to being a completionist, not to the game. Most if not all games do not rely on players to engage with every bit of content there, because that would increase the threshold for completion exponentially. People don't complete games as-is (heck, I don't complete some of the games I play), so keeping the threshold to story and content progression balanced is important.
If it makes it more interesting to you, try doing a playthrough where you only do the loyalty missions for the squadmates that you like or take with you all the time as that particular Shepard. Or, play a fresh game with a fresh Shepard on Insanity. That'll up the difficulty a bit. ![]()
Question for Jos:
As a Dutchman, can you survive without Gouda cheese? How big is your reserve in case the Yeti apocalypse breaks out?
In theory I think it is possible to survive without Gouda cheese, but I have never been crazy enough to attempt it. My reserve is plentiful.
Absolutely not, if Jos may debate this here, we may as well.
Caveat that when there's tweets to discuss, we do that in here, and we stay on the rails with these discussions.
Oh come on. This discussion was just asking for it.
And I get it. But there are a lot of learnings to be gained from games that have been released. Dragon Age Inquisition as a game, and the people who developed it, have done a lot of things that are interesting to look at and to learn from. Both in what to do and in what not to do. Just because we as developers internally learn from the experiences of our co-workers on other projects, it doesn't mean that we look to make Mass Effect more like Dragon Age or the other way around. There's simply a lot to learn, and we'd be crazy to not look at what did and did not work on other projects.
Mass Effect will be like Mass Effect. As someone who has worked on ME2 and ME3 and most DLC for both, AND a stint on Inquisition, I can tell you that the Mass Effect I'm working on is very much Mass Effect. You can use as many grains of salt as you want, considering I have a vested interest and I have bias, but this is a Mass Effect game. ![]()
I've got one of those t-shirts too. It's a pretty rad t-shirt.
Alright I know I'm being an annoying nitpicky fan now, but what if one did not feel Mass Effect 3 was very "Mass-Effect-y"?
Particularly, I felt the lack of exploration and lack of more story emphasis or atmosphere like ME1 and ME2 was quite jarring.
Not to say it was as jarring as the difference between all three dragon age games.
You're not annoying or nitpicky when you explain the way you feel about the differences. All opinions are valid. The Mass Effect games in the trilogy all served a purpose, and were geared more towards their purpose. Having an exploration focus in ME3 would have been problematic for the tone and the structure. They each told a story, and part of a larger story. They were all still Mass Effect games though, and felt like Mass Effect games to me.
And there's definitely a good few lessons learned from the 3 games, and those learnings are put forward into the next Mass Effect. This won't tell you much anything about the game, its story, its structure, or anything, but it is a Mass Effect game. ![]()
(related: is it a bit weird that he's posted quite a bit on NeoGAF about DA:I and now NME, but Bioware devs are still avoiding their actual forum like the plague?)
Ah, but is there a suggestion here that not posting = not reading? Because I can guarantee you that those 2 are different. I read far more than what I respond to, both because my input is not needed/wanted/required for most discussions, and in some cases it is better to not post when relevant or pertinent information cannot be shared. And, unfortunately, the more one gets involved in discussing things, the bigger the chance becomes any of us accidentally share things that aren't ready to be shared yet. It's a way of being smart about what we can talk about. Of course everyone wants to have more information and see cool things, but I doubt the good people here want anyone to get in trouble over something that just wasn't quite ready.
Not even a date when you'd share more details on the next game?
Not even that.
Jos, can you at least say if you are thinking of implementing Tressfx? After playing Tomb Raider, Mass Effect's hair makes me weep.
I cannot.
Although he never commented on it Jos must have read my 'space penguin' side quest idea and for that i am thankful. I will look forward to the quest making an appearance in the next game.
I'm really not sure that I remember the space penguin quest. There is a lot of reading material on these forums. Could you remind me?
I get that it's difficult to take at face value, with my name having BioWare right underneath it and all, but what I write on Twitter isn't part of anyone's hype machine. I'm merely sharing what I'm up to, and what's exciting to me. If I dance around what the exciting stuff is, it's because I can't detail it. If there were any official information on the game coming out, it would be through official channels.
I simply much prefer to interact with people in some way than not. ![]()

Ditto. Information release really isn't our bailiwick. But we like interacting with y'all!
Is Jos still creeping around these parts or did a few over zealous fans scare him off? And what happened to our good pal Barret.. I miss his quirky posts.
No doubt you're all working hard with the time you've been allocated for the next installment, arghhhh can't wait.
*fingers crossed* just 1 more year give or take a few months.
Sometimes I have a weekend and I indulge in this mythical notion of "free time". Also, my posts are quirky?
Question: Van Gaal, real deal or fraud?
Ok, I was being a little pessimistic. I just don't want to get my hopes up to high and then get crushed. I've been reluctant to buy my ticket for the hype train. Jos, any comment on this
Whether or not they're able to might not even factor into it. I feel like the devs like to see us squirm, so they'd purposefully not give a straight answer.
Could be wrong, though.
Keyword was forcing to use it, which implied that it wasn't easily configurable as port IMO should be.
Port 8080 is not forced (we don't use 8080 for our services), it's just the default. You can configure it to anything you like in the orbit.yaml config file.
Anyway, yes, it's an online services framework to build services of your own using the same technology we do. It's targeted at programmers and software developers, and we hope to collaborate on development of the framework with others.
True enough. Did you try to manually update it by right clicking and selecting ''Check for Updates'' ?
Honestly, I am getting the feeling it's some people from Bioware who decided to see how fanatic we are about the franchise. Probably something along the lines of :
''Hey Jos, how much do you want to bet that if I put some new text files in that update, the forums will discover it and go into crazy speculation mode within a week?''
''Hey, they aren't THAT dedicated''
''Yeah, remember that time when you said that Platinum could not be soloed? And within the first few hours of release, it had been done? How did those hats taste?''
''...''
''Jos?''
''Your text files won't last an hour without being uncovered. And since it's April Fools, throw in some ending stuff. That'll teach them to not force me to eat hats!''
Since we are grasping at straws:
Jos doesn't own ME1 or DA:I -> he is a level designer working on the next Mass Effect -> pretty much confirms that all open-worldish levels have been scrapped -> ME:Next will be a corridor-shooter and delayed to 2018
BOOM.
Excuse you? ![]()
