I would be mildly interested in seeing a new lead writer without any previous experience on the franchise.

I get that, a fresh perspective on the franchise could be interesting, however it could also do more harm than good if whoever they get doesn't really know the ME series or respect it, if they don't reeally get why ME fans are so passionate about the series to begin with.

I really can't think of any game where I would be pleased to hear 'The Lead Writer of ____________ is now the lead writer for Mass Effect!'

Because most video games don't have particularly compelling writing.

Because there quite a lot of games with compelling writing, and there's writers who aren't Lead Writers who I think would be good for the job

Chris Avellone would be the best thing ever to happen to this series if he was the lead. But you know... Obsidian needs him too, shucks!

How about no. New Vegas had a pretty mediocre story. Some interesting political stuff, but not a whole lot else.

Trust me we've discussed this before in another thread.

Apparently 10-15 games a year =/= small minority of games released.

Remember kiddies Mr. House and the NCR have absolutely no reason to oppose each other!

He's right though. The writing in video-games still is leagues behind the writing of proper literature, though it's slowly getting on par with the writing in movies (though that's also because movies these days are getting worse and worse).

I can think of a few games with extraordinary good writing though (and Mass Effect isn't one of them).

Do I need to post those in-game quotes where House talks about why he is in a conflcit with the NCR?

When it comes to writing Mass Effect has always been mediocre, whatever praise there is should be given to the animators and  cinematic narrative designers but certainly not the writers, not that there wasn't some decent characterisation now and then or some  interesting conflicts, but almost all of that was local, self contained and short-lived.

Excepting decent writing is not high standards. People who think that need to play more games.

When looking at it's literary qualities Mass Effect in general doesn't elevate it self above being mediocre. Almost everything that I consider to be "good" can be almost entirely attributed to the presentation.
