Why you got a big nerdgasm about new ME? For me ME dies with ME3 seriously...

...Yet you're posting on the Mass Effect boards?

There's actually quite a few of us with that sentiment on these boards Posted Image

Regardless of our opinions on the ending, most people come here just to keep informed. For some, Mass Effect may be collecting dust, but for others, the series is still alive and well.

Besides, some people who hated Mass Effect 3 could just be looking to see where Bioware is taking the next game in the series. Just because it is dead for some people doesn't mean they have no interest in reviving it ( or reminding themselves of how much they used to enjoy it)

Bravo.

All rigth guys, i just came back from awesome Comic Con.
Now as you might have expected...well nothing new was announced or shown so i'm really really sorry.
However, it was still rather interesting.
At the panel, there was one cinematic director, the lead cinematic designer and two writers...and they are all working on the next Mass Effect. First i have to say they were a great bunch, very nice indeed and all of them worked on previous Mass Effects, one was even there for ME1, so thats good to know.
Now It was really interesting because from all the questions they answered, eventhough they didn't announce anything officially, it really felt that they are staying true to what made us love ME. So we are to expect complexe characters that we'll have to learn about and built emotional connections...and very probably romances. Other than that they of course couldn't say anything more.
So i'm afraid we'll have to wait longer for anything offical, so lets be patient, but seeing in person the people wo are working on the next Mass Effect was really great.

Thanks for going. Everything I'm hearing so far sounds pretty good. It wouldn't hurt to stay true to the roots of the main trilogy, but a bit of innovation wouldn't hurt either. What did they talk about then? What sort of questions were answered?

Glad to see you had a good time! I'm also curious about what sorts of questions were asked and the answers if it's not too much of a bother :)

I'm not really expecting we'll hear much more until at least the end of the year. Probably more like next year. Still, the Tweets we're seeing and what Lawrence said leave me feeling hopeful that the devs are being faithful to the soul of ME. The details will be different is all.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how they deal with the decision tree given past experience. Fewer, more meaningful choices seem to be the way they're headed. That means more auto dialogue I guess, but I can deal with that.

There was an interesting line in one of the PAX panels (I think it might've been the one on LGBTQ themes) when someone asked a question about female aliens (turians, krogan, salarians) in the Mass Effect series and why it took so long to see them.

In their answers some of the team very briefly mentioned the next Mass Effect as though it was very meaningful, but they obviously couldn't talk about it. That made me think maybe something crazy like male and female alien options for the next protagonist is on the cards. Dragon Age is doing it, after all, and if I had to guess Mass Effect would have more resources available (or be able to wrangle more money within EA).

Total speculation, but if I had to make a ridiculously early prediction about the next ME, I'd suspect we could see playable alien (and male/female) versions of the protagonist, in a game that focuses a lot on exploration and discovery.

I'd be really excited for that. Would also increase replay value tremendously.

I'm not sure about playable races. I really like the idea, and really enjoyed it in DA: Origins, but I don't know how well it would work for Mass Effect. The idea of playing as an asari or turian is very appealing, although I believe that, Shepard being the only playable character helped the series become instantly recognisable. Everybody knew Shepard. A fantastic song about him/her was even spawned. Having playable races, may erase part of that recognisability.

@Lawrence0294, thanks for the report.  I'm glad you had a good time and I too hope we get some info soon.

A DA:O type "origin" story arc for the different races/classes would be awesome if they can do that. I don't mind the player race locked as human like Commander Shepard and Hawke.

But we don't have Shepard anymore so a new human character wouldn't be more recognisable than race selection
And the race selection is a very recognisable aspect of ME3's multiplayer

Race selection would be cool I have to say. Geth protagonist lol. Krogan female ftw!

The only trouble is, in the context of a new trilogy which presumably will have save transfers, I think it would be difficult to implement this. The different races have so many shapes, sizes and generalised traits. They'd probably need more than two voice actors/actresses for a start. and each race would have to have it's own model. You couldn't just use different skins on the same model. The more I think about it, the more seems like a bit of a nightmare.

Good on them if they can do it and do it well, but the safer bet would be to stick with human characters only.

Regarding models. I think ME3 multiplayer suffered because it used one generalised model. Remember Shepard did that spastic looking sprint? I think that's because they had to devise a model which would work for the Krogan with their massive legs. I'm not an expert on the technical side of game design, so maybe I'm wrong.

Or one of the other races. I'd gladly play as an Asari or a Turian in this new game.

If the reactions from four playable races for Inquisition is anything to learn from, it's that people LOVE playing different races.

The DAI team are doing something similar by having playable dwarves/elves/qunari, who all have different sizes and shapes (and heights!). They haven't released details of the voice actors, but I'd guess they are using separate ones for each race and gender combination. It's presumably a significant amount of extra work and money, but they obviously consider it worthwhile.

The reason I think this is even a possibility is because changing the engine to Frostbite necessarily involves basically rethinking and rebuilding the entire concept of "Mass Effect" - none of their systems carry over so it's an opportunity to redo the game from the ground up. Given the popularity of playing racial options in ME3 MP, I figured a protagonist that could be from several alien races was definitely something that could happen.

(And then, the comment about female aliens on the PAX panel was interesting too.)

Unlike the transition from ME to ME2 or ME2 to ME3, this new game is having to be redesigned and rebuilt from scratch. I suspect they're using it as an opportunity to innovate in a lot of areas that simply weren't possible on the old engine (and with old technology).

True, although it's also because we had it available in Origins, while it would be new for Mass Effect; however, we've gotten a little taste from MP. And since this is a new slate and all, I'm totally down for race selection.

Not really guys, if you look at Origins most of the people (like 90%) are playing humans, so...

No I think Mass Effect 4 should be only human in story mode. If you want to play a turian or asari just go multiplayer like ME3.

Well, Origins' racial choices for the protagonist were clearly popular *enough* - at least among the hardcore fanbase - that they felt it was worth including them again in DA:I, with all of the massive costs and logistical work that this would require. If they didn't think there was a benefit to having multiple racial choices, they wouldn't be doing it.

It's tough to tell how much of that is just going for goodwill with fans, but multiple races are a serious selling point - and as devs have pointed out, the game *appears* to have more value by having multiple choices, even if players don't ever use them. There's value in just being able to pick.

We also have no idea if the next Mass Effect will even have multiplayer, let alone whether it would feature multiple races if it did.

And if I want to be immersed in a story and interact with other characters AS a turian or an Asari ? because the "hostiles !" and "lost shields !" are not really ideal for roleplaying

BW would never do voice recording and specil story parts for like 5 races and 2 genders so at best we would get a one fits all story and voice acting, other races would be nothing more than some blingbling and the story gets limited, too.
