Had a number of inspiring discussions this week with the visiting Mass Effect team from BioWare Montreal. Always love it when they're here.

It's unclear whether Mac is Narrative Director for Mass Effect and/or for Casey"s new IP, though I have no idea whether new projects would even have someone in that position at this point in development.

Didn't the ME series have a Narrative Director all along? I thought the role had more to do with ensuring that all the series' media fit somewhere and didn't do crazy things with characters/the timeline.

I think Chris L'etoile/Stormwaltz handled timelines and such. Not sure who took over after him. Perhaps Mac.

Mike Gamble@GambleMike: Currently in a @masseffect sprint review. Some phenomenal work from all teams, but these character turnarounds are making my jaw drop.

What is a character turnaround?

He might be referring to changes of loyalties and allegiances? Or foes/secondary characters who will now become key to the plot? "Character turnarounds" may be interpreted in so many different ways... I hope he doesn't mean Kai Leng and his crew are the new protagonists in the next ME :P

By turnaround I think he just means how much more content there is since the last review.

Character turnarounds are the 3D models of the characters being rendered, they are usually presented by doing a 360 camera pan around them. It's essentially the art team showing off their character models from the previous sprint.

Yeah, this seems to be correct.

Based on that tweet it sounds like next-gen character models will be more detailed, which is always nice.

(And if they can approximate what DA:I is doing with armour/outfit customisation, I'll be pretty happy.)

From a few weeks back, a level designer in a sprint review:

Jess Hara Campbell ‏@jharacampbell
Oh, holy ****. I envy the player who will experience this game as a completed whole. Not that I'd give up making it, of course #masseffect

I would imagine that 'Narrative Director' is a position that keeps Walters on in an advisory position but doesn't give him any ultimate authority.

They clearly want to keep him out of the limelight.

Actually a narrative director usually has ultimate authority for everything story related. It's a promotion from lead writer, who answers to the narrative director if the structure for Mass Effect is comparable to for example Halo.

This simply isn't true at all.

David Gaider recently made a blog post that addressed exactly this. One of the big points was that titles can and do mean very different things for different studios.

They did say it'd be a while still before they announce anything publicly.

It's a good sign when someone is passionate and can't wait to show it off. At least we know they're not "cranking" out work and going through the motions.

I'm just dying to know what the premise of the next story will be. Then I'll decide to start getting excited or not.

Whatever the definition of our narrative director is, he did recently say in an interview that the next game will  ''tell a story that doesn’t relate necessarily to any of the Shepard events at all, whatsoever.'' Also said that they want to make sure the game has the Mass Effect feel and also talks about the ME3 endings (20 years from now, they'll still be talking about this, won't they?).

It shows that he's at least somewhat involved in the story of the next game. Though we already knew the next game wouldn't involve Shepard, this is a bit more precise, so we are most likely looking at a prequel or sequel (or a really self contained story within the timeline of the original trilogy.) Quote is from a recent interview at the New York Comic Con. At least some info came out of it :)

Hm, I'm kinda uncomfortable with the assumption in the interview that dissatisfaction with the ending basically boils down to people being upset about Shepard, since it ignores a lot of the criticism that the story elements of the last ten minutes were confusing and pretty nonsensical.

Interesting answers about Foundation and where they're heading with the next game though. It sounds like the next one will be a fairly definitive break with Shepard's trilogy, especially if they're talking about not including the companions and characters.

It's their job to refuse to admit the ending had more problems than just fans being mad about Shepard dying.

This interview is hilarious: "People upset about Shepards death...thats the problem. totally it's not about my ****ty writing..."

I hope next time someone will keep him in check.

It is a big part of it.  But yeah, definitely not the entirety of the problem

It's actually good news to me.  Shepard's story is now radioactive.  Best to get as far away from it as possible.

Yeah, I'd definitely prefer if we don't hear much about the Reapers or Shepard's trilogy again. Citadel was a pretty great final DLC, but when they tried to explain the Reapers' origins in Leviathan it only made the entire trilogy seem like a frustrating, meaningless mess, and that whole storyline is sorta beyond saving for me.

There's a lot of interesting story potential in so many other areas of the IP, and I'd be pleased if the next Mass Effect returns to the sort of themes we saw in the first two games, rather than getting caught up in cosmicism and giant robots. The overarching plot of Shepard's trilogy was badly fumbled and I'd really hope they don't do it again.

Damn it! i need internet points, so i can be able to award them to you, The most Elite of Pinecones! Oh ye lord of seeds!

Anyhow, i completely agree, shepard story is done, and i think if they ruffle thru the carcass they will only show old festering wounds, and black holes of lore gone awry.

I don't mind to hear more about Shepard. I'll be very disappointed if they'll just put him and the ending under the carpet, like it never happened.
