Bear in mind it's still like 3am in Edmonton and 5am in Montreal - there's still the whole of Christmas for them to release something!

I don't think we'll get must of substance until the game is ready to be announced, with the exception of some cheeky teases like cryptic and hugely vague twitter chatter. Blurry, offscreen concept art shot at best. Even then, the last bundle was to celebrate N7 day, and the game will certainly be formally announced before the next one.

If E3 2014 is the projected announcement date we may get another concept art tease over the next six months. If they've got an Q1/Q2 Game Informer cover lined up I'd say no.

That's all I'm expecting. It's fun to speculate based off that kind thing.

Question is: will we play Picard or Riker?

I don't think they'd want to actively constrain the player by making them a first officer.

(For narrative reasons, and because it seems people absolutely freak out about not having agency or being denied their own personal power fantasy.)

But if I'm going to wildly over-interpret an old tweet that probably has nothing at all to do with the next game: it'd actually be interesting to have a second-in-command character. Pressly was a bit of a blank slate in ME1 (even though he was the formal XO) and Shepard never had an underling after that, even if Joker went a bit mad with power and basically flew the ship singlehandedly.

I think the game could work well with the player as second in command. People talk about not wanting to be railroaded and yet the story has to develop in a particular way. Having to follow orders and direction in particular cases is fine to me.

Of course on the other hand the tweet could be referring to something else or have nothing to do with next ME at all.

ME3 wasn't much more than "Yes Sir, Mr Hackett, Sir!".
As long as we don't have to play Wesley or Troi, I'm ok with it.

ME1: Yes, Sir Mr. Anderson and Council, Sir!
ME2: Yes, Sir Mr. Illusive Man, Sir!
ME3: Yes, Sir Mr. Hackett, Sir!

No matter how much they advertise a game with non-linearity and interactivity, it will still have a main plot which it would strictly follow. I'm absolutely ok with that, especially when a game is story-centric.

We are yet to see a story centered game which manages to challenge the restrains of main-plot linearity (Even The Witcher 2 could not break linearity... it only managed to make a game where you can see 2 sides of the same story + many sublplot permutations). I'd love to see this problem challenged and I cetainly would love to play a game like that.

At least in ME1 and 2 I could tell the authority figures to go screw themselves. You're right that all 3 games had linear plots and Shepard was certainly forced into a lot of situations, but he/she didn't have to be happy about it in the first 2. ME3 was all saluting, apologizing, and other autodialogue without the slightest input from the player.

What's the earliest possible event we could get a nice sized nugget of info from this year?

I wouldn't count on any real information on the next ME game until at least we get a firm release date for Inquisition

I just want some very basic information. Basically when the game is set and whether it will try to cater to different endings/decisions from ME3 if its set sequentially later. Apart from that I wouldn't care if there was no more information given before the game was released.

There's another way to interpret that Tweet, and EP hinted at it. The main character will be the captain, but he will have a second in command to talk and debate with like the Picard and Riker relationship. In my ME3 playthrough, I often saw Garrus as taking on that kind of role in an unofficial sort of way.
