Getting set for our first motion capture session for the next #MassEffect .Off to Vancouver tomorrow to use EA's world class mocap facility.
FINALLY!!! It was the only thing Bioware games lacked!
No more weird lip-sync, plastered on facial expressions, STEEEEEVEEEEEEE!
I'm in heaveeeeeen <3<3<3
Seriously, it will help with immersion![]()
Here's to hoping they lso remember to animate the iris' in the eyes moving with the head....
So jarring to have Shep looking one way, then looks up or down, and then Shep's just showing the whites of his/her eyes.

Today is a read documentation day, which sounds lame, but is exciting because I get to learn all about the game I'll be working on now!

@Sjosz can you say whether it's DAI/ME/new IP?

Motion capture doesn't imply capturing facial expressions or lip-syncing. Besides, why is that so important?
To my mind it's the least off putting thing and using motion capture for facial expressions adds a lot of expense for little benefit.

I'm fine with or without motion capture being used for facial expressions.
But not animating the eye movement with the face (especially if a head is turned significantly) shows a lack of detail to the animation. And it's really bizzare looking.
The motion capture for facial expressions, with the animation style can either look like they were done well, or look....off.

Quoting Yahtzee: "But when the characters deliver the dialogue, they always come down with
the BioWare face, that uncanny valleyesque look of oddness because the
voices and the physical movements are created separately. You can almost
see them going over their stage directions in their heads. "Hello,
Commander Shepard (wave hand). I heard you might show up today (nod
head). How 'bout those freaky aliens, eh (shake fist, grr grr, slightly
racist undercurrent)?"
They are robots working on algorithms: "For this line of text i have to move lips like this, when this word comes up in the sentence i have to arch my eyebrows like that while the rest of my face stays rock solid and choose this algorithm out of existing 5 to move my hands."
After hours and hours of gaming i find this very irritating.

Nice to see a friendly face on the Mass Effect forums:)
So, are there a lot of people at Edmonton that are working on the next Mass Effect, or is Edmonton mostly DAI/New IP?

Jos was one of the devious level designers for ME3 mp. I wonder if his new assignment is somewhat like his old one?
Hardly devious, I thought you guys and gals enjoyed a challenge. Don't forget that besides a lot of the DLC MP levels for ME3, I also worked on the main game's singleplayer missions (for 2 and 3) and Citadel, too. So I could be working on anything!

I have to say I agree with this to a certain extent. There were times in all the ME games when the character and facial animation wasn't what it could have been. In an FPS, that doesn't really matter much, but in a story and character based game like Mass Effect, it's important. I'd say it's one of the things where the unreal engine made things difficult for the devs. They pushed that engine so much further than was ever envisioned.
I personally didn't let it bother me too much, but there were times when it did break immersion. I can understand how it would be a big deal to others. The good news is that Frostbite makes it much easier for the devs to make characters feel organic. Still not perfect, but a huge improvement over what we've seen before.

Looks like the studio in this video is the same one that they'll use for ME (and I think, is the same on that was used for DA last year):
