What's the next big event that we can expect to see a small teaser?

http://www.gdconf.com/ I believe.

ME2 was announced on it.

Yep. For an announcement this year, your most likely bets are:

GDC '14 March 17-21: Mass Effect 2 was teased at GDC, and BioWare showed off tech/system videos.
E3 2014 June 10-12: It's E3. If the game is due Q3/Q4 2015, an announcement here wouldn't be usual.
N7 Day '14: Obvious reasons.
Game Informer cover: BioWare/EA are super friendly with Game Informer, and I think they've had a cover story on every one of their games. GI often gets a first look scoop.

Jos Hendriks (who I think is a level designer) has switched from DA:I to the next Mass Effect:

Today is a read documentation day, which sounds lame, but is exciting because I get to learn all about the game I'll be working on now!

[user]
@Sjosz can you say whether it's DAI/ME/new IP?

Jos HeN7driks ‏@Sjosz
@[user] ME.

Correct. ^_^

Wow Jos! Welcome back! You're my favourit! No, but seriously, I'm glad that you're back on deck with the new ME.

One question to you. Is Casey on board too, or he is occupied with the new IP? I hope he is, since he is a real magician, in a good way of course. :wizard:

Agreed. The big announcement times isn't so much right now, but March, June, November. Maybe more, but I'm not sure they would have a big announcement/trailer for other conventions, but I could be wrong.

I'm not going to assume something is coming for March, but I'd be very damn surprised they if don't even have a short CGI trailer for E3, and then over the next several months after that, tease the game (maybe with footage) more and more, and have something interesting for N7 day, leading to their PR hype binge.

I only hope we don't have another "day 1 DLC" incident. I don't know how many more controversies I can handle?

Rest assured, if there aren't any controversies in the next game then one will be created.

The mere nature of making another ME game, taking Shepard out of the equation, having to manufacture a new protagonist and have a new plot, that guarantees that a lot of people are going to be angry about something.

Even the time period is going to make some people angry, I'd guess.

Above and beyond the different protagonist or the potential storyline, the big elephant in the room is when MENext is set, and how it would deal with ME3 if it takes place afterwards.

The frst teaser trailer does not need to tell us what time period is set in, does it?

Indeed.

All the ME2 teaser showed was a geth in Shep's armor and stuff saying who Shepard's allies are and that Shepard is dead.

It's what ME2 is all about. Might not look like it to you, but it is.

Just like ME3 is all about Taking Earth Back. So we learn that Earth, which is the homeworld of DefaultShep (Earthborn Sole Survivor), is being destroyed.

Expect the same deal for the next game. If I were to guess, it'd be as drastic (to the players) sounding as the ME2 teaser (more 'intimate' instead of more 'epic' like ME3 and ME1), but for the actual game, it'll still take a more mellow approach and just try to be a fun experience.

WE may have attachment to Shepard, but really, I don't think the devs do. 'Shepard' is just as disposable as anyone else, when it comes down to the devs. In fact, older conceptions of even ME2, seemed to involve Shepard having huge identity issues with being a recreation and partially synthetic etc. The actual game decided to take a more distant approach to it, keeping most players not thinking too hard about it.

But yes, 'Shepard dies' just isn't as big to the devs as it is to players, who get SO attached to characters that even the prospect of certain side characters dying puts up threads 100s of pages long on BSN.

Oh, that would be the worst. The absolute worst.

Deliberately being vague would be way more annoying than not saying anything at all. If we're talking about fans being angry, trying to sidestep that maelstrom by not mentioning a time period would be one way to make me pretty frustrated :P

When they announce anything at all, I'd much prefer them to be clear and absolutely specific.

Yanick Roy (the Montreal studio director) did actually ask people what they wanted in a first teaser trailer - way back in June last year after the DA: Inquisition trailer at E3:

Yanick Roy ‏@YanickRRoy
When we release a teaser trailer for the next ME, like DA3 just did, what would you like to see? What question would you like answered?

Yanick Roy ‏@YanickRRoy
We really do have the best fans: I've gotten well over 200 answers to my question so far!

Yanick Roy ‏@YanickRRoy
When the game takes place and who you get to play are very strong trends in your answers.

Yanick Roy ‏@YanickRRoy
And while I'm sure you'd want both, I'm getting more requests about story than gameplay. It makes sense, it's core to a BioWare game!

So... hopefully it will have information about the protagonist and the time period?

Hopefully the latest we end up getting a teaser trailer this year is at E3.

Knowing how EA works I expect to see a teaser like Battlefront or Mirror's Edge 2 during their presentation on E3.

What do you mean, smoke and mirrors? All of that stuff was so real it was unreal.

Guys, I think you can stop worrying about ME:Next. The franchise is clearly in good hands :D

Wouldn't be much of a teaser trailer if it had that in it now would it?.  Posted Image

Seriously, the most ide expect is for it to be visually the ME universe ( armour, weapons etc ) but nothing more, it'll be the kind of deliberately vague teaser trailer that raises a thousand questions & gives no answers.

Which is precisely the point of a teaser trailer, get people talking & speculating & start the hype train rolling.  Posted Image

Hehe, just remember how much ME3's first "soldier in London" trailer told us about the story of ME3.

I don't know, I mean... DA:I's first trailer had quite a large amount of information.

If they're waiting this long and are presumably going to use in-engine footage to show off how shiny Mass Effect looks in Frostbite, I don't really think it'll be much of a teaser trailer.

Why would Yanick Roy ask something like that only to go ahead and develop a teaser that told us absolutely nothing about the game? If the reply was that people want to see the time period and protagonist, why wouldn't they show those?

Or even ME2's.

Sure, something says Shepard is dead, but the only hint we have about anything else is that there's a Geth there.

That lead to all sorts of thinking, in multiple directions. Which I think was the point. How did he die. Why did he die. Did he really die, or are they pulling a fast one on us. What's this geth. Why is it here with Shepard's armor. etc.

ME3 was more direct, but IRONICALLY enough, the actual game seems to be a mind****.

So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if we see more like ME2 style (even if longer, maybe with more info than the ME2 teaser), to shock and awe people (especially casual fans; imo more avid fans of franchises should know to roll with most types of punches), but the game itself you can probably count on being less 'wtf' as so much of ME3 was/became.

It would, DA:I is a Dragon Age game, ME:TNG is damn near an unknown, the only thing we know about it is it's going to be set "somewhere" and "somewhen" in the Mass Effect universe, probably, & thats it, so for your very first teaser trailer you set the scene, you don't introduce the protagonist & time frame.

How long do average teaser trailers last?

30 seconds to 2 minutes. I think.

I'd hope for at least a minute, in this case.

Hmm, teaser trailers can be like 5-10 seconds. depending on how much they want to tease. The new Star Wars battlefront teaser is like 10 seconds at most.

That's not the average though, and especially not for Bioware.

Bioware has had little advert commercials that long though, yeah.

Something new to speculate on would be nice. Just a little tease to tie us over.
