Jos Hendriks@Sjosz: I tried to look at something that I could screencap and mask/blur enough to get away with showing, but I couldn't find anything safe. #space
Thanks for trying. If you ever do find something blurry enough to be screencaped, we'll be more than happy to over analyze it again, and again, ... ![]()

And for those of us who would rather forget the trilogy entirely.
Hmm. I would certainly hope there's nobody like that here. I mean, you'd must have to be suffering from some kind of neurosis if you 'want to forget the trilogy' yet spend significant time on this forum.

They seem to be making good progress, really hope we see something at E3
I wouldn't call prototyping good progress, it's just a show 'n' tell, some of the things shown could well wind up nothing more than a nice concept that ultimatley fails to make its way into the finished game.

Well, they have the story down, they've got the basic mechanics working and at least 1 kind of mission so I'd call that good progress.

Or you can combine the fact that they have prototypes with Jos his post about not being able to blur things enough so he can show it to us and come to the conclusion that they atleast already have visual working stuff. (This is something which we know for quite some time now of course lol, but the fact that the prototypes are visual and probably interactive is a lot better than only having written prototypes etc. )

They're far past simply written prototypes. They're in the middle of making the game-as-we'll-know-it.

Stuff might get prototype, scrapped, and then used in the sequel or a new game entirely, too.

I agree. This is particularly apparent in Mass Effect.
I even think I read somewhere that the whole 'Shepard story' (not necessarily the character, but the whole protag vs machines stuff) was first considered to be for one game only. However, even if that's true, it was still early in dev stages that a trilogy was decided.
BW tests out some things (story and mechanics) in one game, and cuts some stuff out to put in the next game.
I think I've also read that Citadel DLC was partially for ME2. (I disagree with those who consider it copy-pasted though)
Devs try a lot of things before they fully understand everything going into a feature/level/plot/game.

This is probably true if just for the logistics of funding game development. From what I've read Mass Effect was always envisioned as a trilogy, but the reality of business and economy can never guarantee those things. BioWare was independent at the time and likely could not fund three games off their own back, hence pitching the first and having Microsoft back it, with EA eventually taking the mantle.
For all BioWare knew, regardless of probability, Mass Effect could have tanked hard commercially, which would put the "trilogy" future in doubt. And that's something BioWare would have had to account for, the possibility that the trilogy on a development level wouldn't play out exactly as they hoped and predicted. Disastrous sales for Mass Effect wouldn't be particularly encouraging for Microsoft, EA, or anyone for that matter to pick up two more games. Personally I feel this is also why the first game has the most self contained and "complete" story arc of the entire series. It leaves room for sequels but ends almost all plot threads on a pretty satisfying note. Worst case scenario: they couldn't make the sequels as intended, or at all. At least they'd have one great story arc to leave the series on.
