If it IS called Mass Effect: Contact then I hope it means making contact with new species and not a prequel. I really don't want a prequel.

I like the idea of Mass Effect: Horizon, though. If it's exploration related, maybe ME: Expanse? I'm bad a this.

Well, it looks like EA will announce 6 new projects this E3.

http://ca.ign.com/ar...ects-at-e3-2014

It says that 1 one of them will be releasing as soon as Q3. Not related, but it does give me a bit of hope that MEN will at least be announced.

It would be nice if ME is one of those :wizard:

The unannounced one is this year's Battlefield (made by Visceral). That's the list for this year through next April.

Yeah. They have six games to announce, one of which is the Battlefield-that-isn't-Battlefield-5.

The other five games are anyone's guess.

I forgot about this but somebody else brought up Mass Effect: Contact over a year ago, and they claimed to have inside information too.

Two big issues are:

1. The game outlined in that year-old rumour (an FPS First Contact War game) is not real or accurate, because the Montreal devs have already said MEN is the same sort of RPG-shooter as Shepard's trilogy, and it focuses on exploration - not a war. The other "information" in that post seems deliberately inflammatory and troll-y, like saying there's a focus on multiplayer and making the gameplay more accessible. It also sounds nothing like the game that was supposedly talked about at the PAX fan panel, *or* the other rumours that have come out in the last few months.

2. The early 2013 "rumours" about a Mass Effect: Contact game look nothing like what shinobi and that other Twitter account are talking about, in which case the game has either changed dramatically or random people are just guessing the Contact subtitle and adding whatever rumours they feel like to it.

I don't know how accurate or informed those two Twitter accounts are, but it is possible that a rumour about "Mass Effect: Contact" has been floating around for a year without any basis in reality. I guess we'll find out at E3.

(That said, Mass Effect: Contact does sound like a plausible name if the game is about exploration, discovery and new alien races - I don't think it necessarily has to do with the First Contact War, even though that period of history is what I find personally the most interesting. I'm still concerned about the implications of things set post-ME3.)

And just while we're indulging rumours:

[@user] No.

Okay, so First Contact War (please don't ban me BioWare peeps, I mean no harm). I asked around about it awhile ago but that rumour spiked my curiosity (the dude totally nailed content in Mass Effect 3: Citadel months before it came out) and was given believable confirmation from a couple of people that the rumoured project did indeed exist, much as the rumour suggests too: first person shooter based around the "First Contact War". I don't know if it was called "Mass Effect: Contact" and I don't know who was making it. Might have been Montreal, might have been someone else delegated to it as side project. And I don't really know anything other than it once existing in some form. But apparently it was being made, at least early prototyping sometime around when Mass Effect 3 development wrapped up (or during the final days). We've all seen the first person shooter prototype that was scrapped and later became Mass Effect 3's multiplayer. This was kinda, I guess, an extension of that into a full game.

It was cut/canned for reasons I don't know, and quite some time ago too. I don't know how far into development it got. And I don't know of any other concepts/prototypes/ideas that were started and later scrapped too (for a series like this I'm sure there's a few!). I don't know what relation it has or had with Montreal's Mass Effect if any at all. All I know, if true, is that it existed and was cut and probably wont see the light of day, maybe never produced anything worth seeing the light of day.

Note: this game was explicitly "First Contact War", or so I'm told. That does leave room for "First Contact", as in humanity's earliest days in space, likely just after said war when they first started getting involved in the galactic community. Maybe Montreal's Mass Effect is about that. Or maybe it's an alt-universe sequel. Or maybe it's a Hanar dating sim. ~it's a mystery~

EDIT: Necessary disclaimer: the above might be total poopbutt garbage for all I know, but that's what I've learned.

That's interesting.

As much as they sorta retconned the First Contact War to be more ~interesting~ in the Jack Harper comics, I have to say that a military shooter set in that particular conflict is just about the least exciting Mass Effect spin-off I could possibly imagine.

Were there even ground battles in the war? The codex made it sound like it was all fought from space, with reasonably tiny forces used on both sides until the Alliance's reinforcement fleet finally showed up and everything ended.

Exactly how I feel, and why I disliked the TIM background comic. I liked the way it was described and presented in the codex and game: more of a political stand-off than an all out war. Turians fired first on Human ships, followed by a quick conquest of a settled planet they thought was the homeworld. Humanity recollected and struck back, catching the Turians by surprise and retaking the planet. Council rapidly stepped in and demanded the Turians back off before it escalated, and humanity was introduced to Citadel Space. I'm sure there were smaller skirmishes on the planet surface as well as some aerial battles, but those three "fights" (initial contact, turian conquest of planet, human conquest of turian) were supposed to be the only battles of significance. And that's what kinda made it so interesting. Humanity remembers it as "First Contact War" as for them it was exactly that even if there wasn't much of a long term war going on. Turians remember it as "Relay 314 Incident" as for them they were acting justifiably, it wasn't a war, but instead a political/military incident that was untimely resolved rather quickly. I actually would prefer the incident remain exactly this and not pander to war hungry oorah shootbang, hence why I think the idea of a FPS First Contact War is kinda poo.

If you're going to make a prequel, "First Contact" style game you've got much better material to work with if you set it just after the First Contact War. You know, when it wasn't just Humans and Turians having a hissy fit at each other, but instead humanity integrating into Citadel Space (and beyond) entire for the very first time.

Just want to chime in and say that I spoke to shinobi about this (since he's ex-GAF) and he wanted to clarify that he was mistaken, a misunderstanding with whoever he spoke to about the game. Like most he's not aware of whether or not it's a prequel/sequel/alt-universe or whatever.

No, it's not Contact. Actually, the next Mass Effect game is the origin story of Samantha Traynor, where we learn why she has this thing for premium toothbrushes.

It's called Mass Effect: Dentist.

Garus walks in to see Tranyor hunched over a Hanar.

Garus: What are you doing?!

Tranyor: Turning around to face Garus. Oh hey Garus! I'm just cleaning my customer's mouth.

Garus: Backing away slowly. Thats not his mouth!

I'd love to see a political thriller or something, where humanity's first ambassador to Council space sends us on some secret mission to reconnoitre the known galaxy - I mean, we've just finished fighting a war with one of these races, surely the Systems Alliance leadership would want to know everything about all the different species and any threats to Alliance interests.  It'd be a cool way to capture the sense of first contact that not many games have tackled. That doesn't really allow for much shooting, though, or exploration, so I don't think something set in the "known" galaxy in 2160 or so is a possibility for MEN.

If BW are going for uncharted worlds and big open spaces again, I guess we'd need to be out exploring the universe in a similar way to Shepard in ME1. Maybe exploring a new galaxy entirely, since Mike Gamble mentioned something about wanting to recapture the feeling of being "a stranger in a strange land".

I don't think "contact" is indicative of the "first contact war" anymore than I would think a name like "world" is indicative of a game based on "world war 2." Nor do I think "contact" would be strictly regarding a prequel direction. It could easily be the name of a sequel. It also might not be referring to humanity making contact but rather some new, suspicious alien race who enters the galactic scene making contact with humans/salarians/asari/turians/elcor/etc.

The fan panel at PAX last year - if we can trust this source, and if it's not just someone making things up - mentioned two new races, so it could be exactly that sort of contact.

Yes, I think fixation on Contact equating to First Contact War or prequel is making too many assumptions for what is common neutral term in science fiction and ufology. The Asari made first contact with the Salarians, and the two made first contact with the Rachni and Krogan. All made first contact with the Turian. Who then made first contact with humanity. Humanity made first contact with everyone else, including the batarians.

A sequel could be quite comfortably called "Contact" if first contact with new species is indeed the core theme. And unless BioWare is creatively bankrupt, surely they will not be repeating another Reaper-like big bad. Ergo, first contact with new, mysterious species that have been existing in the galaxy is really quite on point.

That is what I hope to be true.
It would be nice to meet new species and explore exotic alien worlds (like Despoina).

By the way, those cosplays are great.

See now this is awesome! Someone took their time and made an amazing representation that could easily be seen in a live action movie and it not look out of place.

Knowing Hollywood, they would just try to Green Screen/GCI everything, and it would look out of place.

In short Cosplayers >>>>>>>> Hollywood.
