I guess there's also Gamescom in August, N7 day in November, and the VGAs (or whatever they're called now) in December.

 

ME3 got an announcement at the VGAs in 2010 and was due out in late 2011, so they've used that sort of timeframe before.

Nope, it's a term from a project methodology called Scrum. The total work to be done is split up into small segments called sprints.
