I can't comfortably multiquote and I'm getting ready for bed so I'll get back with the other answers to my post when next I'm around (good to see you here, btw, LittleBird!) but...

One benefit of keeping the protagonist human-only is an ability to keep (hopefully) a large number of cinematic conversations.

As much as I liked DA:I, it did seem to have a lot less cinematic conversations than previous games. That was one area where I thought DA:O and DA2 were more immersive.

Yeah, that one I didn't even get into per se. But I'm dreading the hit to cinematic conversation frequency for NME already, as it seemed a compromise for the open-world aspect (which I get why it is popular but it doesn't even do much for me personally) and I think that multiple playable races, as Inquisition had, will only exacerbate the problem.

To be fair, I think Inquisition had about as many cinematic conversations as the first two games, but they're so spread out and confined to key areas that it really doesn't feel like it. The distanced-camera approach broke me from feeling terribly connected to goings-on in the "wild" and with so many secondary faces I never really saw or felt, and I am already bracing for the same with NME to some extent. I'd like to keep reasons for the change to the daunting minimum of "open world/new engine."

If you want to play an alien there is always multiplayer for you and that's fine because the MP is very good.

Eh. I do really like multiplayer, but ME3 and DA:I's MP is a very small experience compared to their single player campaigns. You just get to fight stuff, really, and you don't get to really choose much about your ME3 MP character besides the color of their gear and how you're going to specialize their very small power lists. You don't get to customize the way they look independant of their armor, you don't get to talk to people, experience a plot, make choices, or explore non-combat areas. And depending on which alien you want to place as, you could have a very limited class selection, so if I wanted to play a female Quarian Soldier, for example, I'm out of luck. For those reasons I don't really feel like I'm actually playing an alien in ME3's multiplayer. If anything it almost feels like a demo for what could be.

Personally I'm very hopeful about the possibility of playing as an alien in the next Mass Effect. And yes, I do know to temper my expectations because it is a lot to hope for. But for me, I'm eager for a new experience in the universe. I've already been a human for three games, I want to make my own Quarian, Krogan, or Turian now, and roleplay someone from a very different perspective and background.

I suppose I could be entirely rational on the matter and admit that it doesn't make a big difference to be able to choose my race, but I'm not entirely rational, and for me it does make a big difference. I've never completed DA:O as anything but a City Elf. Something about that character archetype holds my interest in a way that the human characters don't (and the attatchment I have to that character has prevented me from playing a Dwarf. I do love dwarves though! <3 ). And I firmly believe that whatever sacrifices were made to let me play a Qunari in DA:I were worth it, because of the joy I get from playing a Qunari, having horns, and having nobles scoff and call me an Oxman. DA:I would still be a fantastic game even if I could just play a Human, but for me it is greater for allowing me to be something else.

I also feel like it'll be a wasted opportunity if they choose not to include playable aliens in the campaign. This *is* something people have been asking for since the first game's release (probably even before that if I were to guess). This new Mass Effect game is basically a blank slate for the franchise, they could do almost anything they want with it. Why not include playable aliens now? (Aside from time, resource, or technical limitations which I understand) And if not now, when?

In relation to all this talk about playing as an alien, I really think that this would be an excellent time to introduce it. From what we know about this game, it will take us to new places in the galaxy and introduce us to new races and cultures. That means getting away from the old that we know, or, in other words, getting away from the theme of humans and their place in the galaxy.

In the trilogy humans found their place in the galaxy. Now, humans and other species go exploring a new part of the galaxy (or a new galaxy), and all of the old species find themselves facing something new and unknown. I don't really see why this would need the player to exclusively play as a human. This really is an ideal scenario for the player to be able to choose their species, because in this scenario members of every species are equally out of their own comfort zone.

I'm afraid  selectable race would hurt the story of ME4.

The whole story would just avoid to mention or reflect our race choise 99% of the time.

Absolutely. It would be full of compromises. Not to mention it would make it considerably harder to use the save import feature as it was in Mass Effect. And I dare say that without it Mass Effect would lose a big chunk of what made Mass Effect Mass Effect.

Yeah unfortunately when we ask for certain features we don't remember there is usually trade-off. DA:I did lots of new things but at the same time many feel at least partially disappointed with the lack of meaningful sidequests, cinematic interactions and engaging narrative. While it is still enjoyable game I hope Mass Effect doesn't go the same route.

The thing is I don't see our race definitely having a huge role in the next ME. From the sounds of it we may not be interacting with Asari, Turians, Salarians etc. on a large scale, but rather explore new areas of space with new species, species who have no preconceptions about our races, and therefore no huge difference in how they deal with us.

I don't see how the save import function would be affected by race selection. If choices are carried over, choices are carried over no matter what the race. It's not race selection that caused Zevran to be alive in DA2 even if he had been killed in DAO.

It would mean more work, yes, but not necessarily as much work as was needed for DAI. Especially if we're talking the cinematic workload, race selection won't have the same impact as in DA. In DA, we have the huge qunari and the tiny dwarves. In ME, only the volus and the krogan deviate from human height by any great margin, and I don't think either of them would be very likely to be playable races anyway. Humans, asari, turians, etc. are all fairly similar in height. Turians are somewhat taller, yes, but enough that it won't have a huge impact on cutscenes.

I'm pretty sure my PC can't. Hopefully the game will be out around early 2016 so I'll have enough money to upgrade :D

Haha, glad Jos is enjoying it. Sounds like NME will be my go-to for the sense of wonder I love about space. The similar design philosophy as DAI re: exploration will hopefully not hinder the main narrative for me, but that'll be a subjective schtick not knowable until I'm considerably deep into a game my space-obsessed self will be very eager to get lost in for a while regardless.

How far away is that horizon?   Check out when the last two are posted.   Less than a minute apart, both at 12 minutes?

I like how that is the thing you latch onto. If it reassures you, I didn't think to tweet the question about a structure at the horizon until well after I thought it and started driving in that direction.

“Hello, gamers, look at your character, now back to me, now back at your character, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if you stopped playing other games and switched to Mass Effect: Next, he could look like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re on a spaceship with the man your character could look like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s a map of a huge uncharted area of the galaxy. Look again, the map is now a guide on ship customization and space combat. Anything is possible when you play Mass Effect: Next and not some other game. I’m in a Mako.”

Well, if anything, game developers have taught me to be very cynical.  Not saying that BioWare has taught me to be very cynical, just game developers in general.

I know, from DA:I, that everything on foot is massive.  In a Mako?   Ehhh, so - so?  Depends on how fast the Mako goes.  But I'll take your word for it.

EDIT :  I mean, trust me...   We'll be going over the rest of your tweets at a later time in another thread.   I just thought that it was a little off when you posted one thing right after the other with the horizon being in question.

Goodness, if I had to trek from my spot to the horizon on foot it would've taken me a good while. The Mako is far faster than going on foot.

And I get it. You don't have to share my excitement, especially when you're not seeing what I'm seeing, and we all have different experiences, but this is honestly not meant to hype people to me personally. I want to be excited for things I work on. I'm sharing some of my excitement insofar I can. Nothing more. :)

Well, the other tweet(s) that I'm focusing on right now have to do with space.

Who, in all three previous games, thought space was "pretty" or gave them a feeling of "wonder and excitement"?

Pretty?  Yah, I can go with that.  Some nebulas.  Horse head nebula, in particular.

Wonder and excitement?  Hmm, having an extremely hard time following the logic on this.  By the third game, I think we all knew what to expect when it came to space exploration.  Unless, you made a space flight sim.  In which case, I'm extremely interested.

Right.  Only one out of all of those is actually in the third game.  And even then I was kind'a "meh" about it.  What I'm talking about is the kind of "wonder and excitement" that you had when you first went through the first mass relay.  When you first read those opening lines of ME.  When you first learned about the benefits and reactions to eezo.  When you first saw your first mass effect core in action.  That's the kind of wonder and excitement that I'm talking about.

I dunno, I could be talking outta my ass here.  But I'm thinking that they made a space flight sim (or at least a very basic one) or something similar.  Where in, you tell your pilot to go some where and he actually goes there in real time, leaving you time to talk to your squad mates.

The Glory of Space was all over the trilogy.

But looking at the environments of Dragon Age it make me wonder what they will be able to accomplish with the new Mass Effect. Oh my god it will be glorious.
