That got me thinking, which games are good to play to kill some of the wait for the next Mass Effect? Other than the original trilogy that is!

Recently I played Deus Ex Human Revolution, which although is cyberpunk sci-fi it has a nice dialogue system and some very good choice/consequence moments, especially when they are all in gameplay.

If I had a xbox I'd pick The Master Chief collection right now, but alas I don't.

What else? Starcraft? Well, if you like RTS sure, although I still haven't picked the second Starcraft II.

Civilization Beyond Earth? I almost bought it in the Steam Summer Sales, but the not so good reviews made me wait.

What else?

Well, I'd recommend the newest X-Com. It's not really like Mass Effect, but it's extremely fun, smart, has alines, cool weapons and you can always name your soldier after Mass Effect chracters...

Deus Ex HR was good. Those other games don't interest me; I've tried them but I need a strongly-focused narrative or I'm out. :P Which is why I don't game much. Doing a trilogy replay right now, then I'll probably get back into hiking and film-watching until MGSV releases. I guess I'm open to suggestions though.

But should we really tempt fate so much by talking about this stuff here? I sense EP charging his fire breath... :P

If I start ME3, I pretty much can't stop until I finish it. Even after multiple replays I still find it insanely addictive.

I know the feeling

Ashley Williams is one of the female voices too.

Soooooo with all the silence with the devs, who here thinks something might show up at PAX South? It's the first year for PAX South, maybe they secured some deets to be unveiled at their event? I sure hope so because I'm going. :-D

I think BioWare returned to work today so I guess the cryptic tweets will return soon.

I'm going to add my two cents while we have this lack of Tweets.

Disclaimer: Bioware is my favourite mainstream dev. Although I feel it has sold its' soul to the large scale publishing industry somewhat, my comments are intended to be constructive.

I'm very much in the camp of thinking that if we don't get an official announcement in the next few months (By E3 at the very latest), there's something wrong with the game. Spitting out new games as complex as RPG's every year or two is clearly a bad thing, but hearing nothing of substance for years is a worry too. Bioware isn't a small dev. They have hundreds of people if not more working for them and have the financial might of EA bankrolling them.

How long was ME3 in development for? Three years? Let's say the devs needed another 6 months to a year to produce an awesome killer of a game without the problems the original product had. NME has been in development for nearly three years now and we haven't had an official announcement. The longer we go from this point without some official word beyond the kind of thing we've been shown so far, the more concerned for the quality of the game I'm going to become.

This whole debate could be solved, and a lot of fan concerns put to rest, if the devs would show or even just tell us very basically where they're at. If we can see that the game world is of a scale bigger than anything Bioware has done before, then we'd know that the long development time is not because major problems have cropped up. There needs to be more transparency without showing us things that could be subject to change. Even just a "subject to change" at the bottom of screen shots and videos (which has been done before) would neutralise much of the kind of criticism ME3 received. A developer which stays tight lipped is often a developer which is experiencing problems and is not confident in their game.

I'm not a great fan of Dragon Age or the fantasy genre in general, but DAI showed that Bioware still has what it takes to create a solid and enjoyable game. I just hope that ability extends to the ME series.

snip

Length of time in development has no correlation whatsoever with game quality, positively or negatively.

Consider Team Fortress 2 on one hand and Duke Nukem Forever on the other.

A game can take forever, or take very little time, for so many different reasons that it's not even worth worrying about.

I don't think we've reached "vaporware" quite yet but yeah I'm tired of waiting too. If this turns into another FFXV debacle (it won't), I will shoot something (I won't - guns IRL are bad). But I will be maaaaad.

Any insight as to why there's a limit in the first place?

If you like what they did with the ME series, it may be worth picking up and playing the Wing Commander 1-5 games on GOG.com. They are cheap (I'd wager you can get the whole series for less than DA:I at this point).

If you like space battles (or even can tolerate them), there's a ton of really good story and squadmates.

If you don't consider Ralgha "Hobbes" a bro on the level of Garrus, then you have no soul.

Those games are ooooold. I don't have anything against classics. I could pick up the first Tomb Raider and play it now (if I had a PSOne) but if you never played them the first time round, it's hard to see the charm of these "antiques".

Well, I did say it was on GOG.com, so I assumed that was understood... but yes, these games are over twenty years old.

Still, the latest three include fully voiced casts, acted cutscenes and has a d@mn good story. If you enjoyed ME because of the story, the movie-esque quality and the characters, then the Wing Commander series should at least be on your radar.

Just checked out a few YouTube videos. I can't believe they were making games with live action cut scenes back then. And I just spotted Luke Skywalker... and a bunch of other well known faces. I'm impressed!

I would suck at that space combat though. Like maybe if there was a difficulty setting 3 levels below casual then maybe... All that info on the HUD is giving me a headache just thinking about trying to understand what the hell it all means.

ETA: The Witcher releases on GOG so it's not only (admittedly cool-looking) relics.
