these are beautiful. i look fwd to exploring these places. i hope there's some good action, too, though. honestly, i look at that first pic and all i can think is thresher maw. like i just know something's gonna come screeching up outta there when i least expect it.

me1 did that to me. gave me an irrational fear of suspiciously open places like that.

Just keep moving and shooting.  Always worked for me.   ;)

and yeah, i lost quite a few ppl my first pt of sm. i didn't go get the crew right away cuz miri and tim gave me the idea that maybe i wasn't ready. i thought , oh, is there something else? i don't wanna rush off and get everyone killed.

i lost miri cuz i was too paragade, and therefore was not able to talk her and jack down without losing loyalty of one them. and legion seemed like he might be a good tech specialist. and others were just a result of who i took with me, as opposed to picking a specialist.

but i loved and still love that mission precisely because of the points EP highlighted. it tied everything together at the end. a result of everything you did, or did not do, throughout the game. there was no reloading just to see other outcomes. you had to start over (unless you played the mini-game of "Strategic Save Points).

In RPGs I try to ignore the mechanics of the game and actually role play.  The game gives you plenty of hints on how to.  Get your team loyal or they'll die, check.  Don't send a soldier into a steam vent suitable for an engineer, check.  Don't let your tech expert run a fire team, check.  Upgrade your ship, check.  I only need to know the mechanics when I'm playing with the game to get a very specific outcome, like killing someone off to see the impact in the next game.

Only negative on the suicide mission I'd say was that non-loyal team members were marked for death but not killed due to their lack of loyalty, but almost randomly.  Someone not loyal?  They should bottle it at a crucial moment and get killed not holding the line, or being abandoned in the reactor core by other team members when it starts to overload.  Not impaled by a random beam, it lacks consequence.

Great follow-up posts, everybody. Especially loved reading yours, LittleBird.

Only area I don't concur with is deriving any joy from completing the mission with zero casualties. Just doesn't do it for me personally. Which leads to some awkward conversations with other fans. :P

Forced/close-to-forced deaths can also be most excellent, agreed, EP. Dat Mordin.

My first run on the SM I lost Mordin.  It really sucked, and it made me mad, seeing him dead like that.  Its what brought me to the BSN - so that I could figure out why he kept dying.  I'd run it again and lose Jack.

I came to find out there was a lot to the SM Hold The Line mechanics.  Without the help of some very intelligent BSNers I would never have gotten my perfect ending - simply because I took my high defense peeps with me to fight the termi-reaper.

I don't like that the mechanics for the fight are not explained in the game, and that you need to reference material outside of the game in order to understand what is going on.  Once I saw how complicated it was, well....  I guess there was no way to explain all of that in the game.

You and I. JeffZero are at opposite ends.  In your run all your peeps lived, and you felt it had cheese factor.  I lost Mordin, then I lost Jack.  Seeing my peeps die made me want to figure it out so very badly.  I had to work pretty hard to get the good ending.  I did more than 3 or 4 full runthroughs of the entire game in order to get the ending I wanted.  Maybe that because I was just having that much fun though  :)

In theory I think it is possible to survive without Gouda cheese, but I have never been crazy enough to attempt it. My reserve is plentiful.

Oh wow, I never knew you were a fellow Dutchman Jos! Of course I could have known by looking at your name, but for some reason I never really thought you were actually Dutch haha. Anyway, Gouda cheese isn't even the worst thing to miss. When I'm on a holiday the things I instantly start to miss are 'Chocoladevlokken', 'hagelslag',, deep-fried products like 'frikandellen' and 'kroketten', bread for lunch and dairy products like 'vla' and normal 'halfvolle melk'. :P When I come to think of it, we Dutch really like to eat special and weird stuff :P

On topic: The Suicide Mission was actually pretty easy in my opinion when you paid good attention to the characteristics of your squadmates and the upgrade options they suggested. I managed to get the perfect ending on my first playthrough! Might have been a large amount of luck though :P.

But that all-important rule must be enforced.

It must make sense, not be an arbitrary thing just to prove it's a "Suicide Mission"

There's a line between tugging emotions, and yanking chains.

I mean, I'm certainly not opposed to the idea that the Suicide Mission was a bit easy to get through.  Part of why I would have liked more challenges:  more opportunities to screw something up.  But I don't like the idea of issuing red shirts to my crew on general principle  :D

As a Dutchman I still don't understand why these things aren't popular around the world.

@Jeff: Thanks :)

I totally get where you're coming from, though. One of the main reasons I love ME3 is because of all the death and tragedy that's in it. It feels real, as if there really is a war going on and I love that. I'm a big advocate of major characters dying in games, maybe even old friends turning against the player - which ends in you having to kill them. The masochist in me would love that.

However, I don't like it when forced(-ish) deaths can't be avoided, when it feels like they could be. Mostly when those are major characters, though. It's like a "your choices don't matter"-moment, and it shatters the illusion.

Though I do think that maybe the Suicide Mission could've been a little more difficult, in that saving the entire team is extremely difficult, nigh-impossible even. Which it isn't in ME2. At least, I don't remember it that way... could just be me though.

It's funny there should be so much talk about the Suicide Mission - I just completed it today :P now on to ME3. Ultimately, however, this is mostly just a vain attempt to placate the insatiable hunger for more Mass Effect... Hoping for more news soon!

I had a thought just before I reached Mars (in the game, not real-life, in case anyone's in doubt :P): Just imagine in 30-40 years from now, there could be like a dozen games in the Mass Effect series :o all of them potentially of the same quality as the first three. What a magnificent world that would be! You wake up to a day of relaxation and think, 'Hmm, I feel like replaying a Mass Effect game today... But which one? Clash of the Krogan? The remastered original trilogy? ME:Dentist? Or maybe ME7 if my boy wants to join for the co-op campaign...' Oh, the possibilities. As endless as space itself!

Oups, I'm rambling. What I'm trying to say is that I've got Mass Effect on my brain and share the anguishing wait for news that I know a few of you have too. So yeah, bring on the tweets!

Two PAXs soon-ish! :D If there's nothing big at PAX South in a week or so, there'll surely be something interesting at PAX East in March.

I remember on N7 Day after they posted those team bios, one of the devs was talking about how they'd be introducing more people in the next few months, and that was already two months ago.

To be fair, neither E3, Comic Con nor N7 were disappointing. All have shown interesting glimpses of the new Mass Effect, with great concept art and even some gameplay videos.

Considering NME is not even officially announced, we do know a lot about it. I'd say it feels a little empty because the most crucial piece of information is nowhere to be seen, and that is when/where NME will take place.

A name to replace ME4, NME and ME:Next with would be cool too. ;)

But yeah, some critical information is still lacking, which is making my brain go all twitchy. I just played through DA:I a couple of days ago and like all other DA's it just lacks something that only Mass Effect managed to pull off emotion wise. Maybe it's because of the scale, the writing, the characters or simply the gameplay, but my hunger for a new ME experience never really could be sated by playing DA. Which is a good thing as well, as it makes the two games feel inherently different rather than just having the same formula applied to a different universe.

That doesn't make my desire for a new Mass Effect take on smaller proportions however, so I'm just as anxious as the next guy on this forum to get some news.

Also, the Dutch forum population seems immense! I'm loving it.

Yah, I mean.   I can bet that there are some pretty strict rules around the office about who they give the game out to, these days.  What with, what...   Their last two games?  ME3 and DAI having their scripts stolen?

I'm just waiting on that day to come and then I'll have to stop hanging around here.   If anybody tells me the ending for ME:N before I play it, I dunno what I'll do to them.  Possibly rip off their arms and beat them to death with them.

Huh? ME3's leak was due to an early beta of the game going up on Xbox Live, and people figuring out that the .tlk files had the whole game script. Nobody leaked it deliberately.

And I've never heard of DAl's story being spoiled beforehand. As far as I know nobody knew what happened in that game until it came out.

Nah, not so much, tbh, @TheChosenOne.

I did it in ME1. It felt appropriate at that particular time for my Shep. In ME2 I chose the Renegade talk down option and, as she said, "bull rushed her on her own show".  It was actually quite satisfying.

And in ME3 I waited for the paragon interrupt. I could already tell she was freaking out. Hurt and upset abt what she had seen and heard happening on earth.

It felt like the personal evolution of my Shep.

When can we expect to hear a release date on me4?

I really hope you guys at bioware kept ur passion on the single player and didnt turn me into a MP game cause omg I will die.

Mass Effect is a big inspiration to me and its a world of life and exploration I live in to deal with real life problems.

God why cant todays world be like ME.

Hey since you all got the idea of how mass relays are built lets just throw this into concept and build one. Then jump to another part of

the galaxy and have some pie with our neighbors (200k light years away) alright PIE!
