I loved driving around the different planets in ME1. Even if there was not much to do in them, they all had a unique atmosphere and feel. Hopefully they do that in ME4 and expand on it. Man I can't wait.
Agreed. For me though, the desolation actually made it better and more immersive. ME2 and ME3's "uncharted worlds" too often felt designed by humans and very artificial - even on the planets without settlements we were stuck in canyons, valleys, etc that felt like a level in a video game, not a distant planet somewhere on the frontier of space. None of them felt as alien or as "spacey" as ME1's UNCs. I think even the Hammerhead stuff in the DLCs was quite linear?
Obviously every planet being a barren wasteland would be boring, but I preferred the feeling of being in this vast unexplored space, where we might be one of the very first people to ever visit. It was also pretty peaceful to just drive around a bit between objectives, and only occasionally stumble across a crashed escape pod or a small colony.
(Thankfully the concept art of the Mako on an asteroid (?) and an icy planet (?) they showed on N7 day looked amazing.)
