I was on BSN in the middle of the MassEffect 3 "fallout", and I didn't think it was that bad. I was on a media blackout until about 4 days after the game was released, so maybe I missed it? Or the moderators did a really good job?

I didn't get onto BSN until around October, iirc.  Granted, I didn't start playing ME until mid-June.  And yes, that was the year ME3 launched.

I didn't think it was that bad. There was some angst and disappointment but I think the majority of people were well behaved. There were positive things like project cupcake and the indoctrination theory which, whatever you think of it, had people putting in many, many hours of theory work.

Resident Gaferoo and GM @AarynFlynn has something to say about DAIs inspiration on the next Mass Effect. http://m.neogaf.com/showpost.php?p=149962268

Michael Gamble @GambleMike

We owe a lot to the @dragonage team for many things, but we're making a game that's distinctly Mass Effect :)

[...] "I'd go so far as to say that dropping the older consoles has had more impact on the overall gameplay goals of the next Mass Effect game than what DAI successfully accomplished."

Yay, sounds like it will actually be worth upgrading my rig for Mass Effect 4 the next Mass Effect

might even check out what that 4k fuss is about.

Very. Twas the worst of times. I was on vacation and didn't get a chance to play on release day, but I checked the forums often. Hype levels were through the roof for me, but I slowly watched it deflate for the majority of people, turning shock into confusion, bitter disappointment, and eventually utter raging, trolling, and hating.

There was some constructive feedback, but it was like a few diamonds surrounded by a wall of fire tearing apart everything from the devs and how much they bombed, arguing amongst players about the validity of ''artistic integrity'', some solid ground wars on whether the indoctrination theory was true or not, the pro-ending people bringing out flame shields the size of planets in order to say that ''people just didn't get what Bioware was doing'', a poll of 100 000 people saying they need a new ending....

Ugh, I'd rather not remember anymore. It was an embarrassment that was way overblown out of proportion. A right to criticize and bring feedback is always welcome, but sending death threats and publicly hating on the devs and BSN members as well is just insane. Some of these people acted as if Bioware had done something horrible to their lives akin to killing someone....

Glad we have a much more friendly, constructive, and happier forums now  :)

Well Shepard did die or get seriously injured.... :P

You're not annoying or nitpicky when you explain the way you feel about the differences. All opinions are valid. The Mass Effect games in the trilogy all served a purpose, and were geared more towards their purpose. Having an exploration focus in ME3 would have been problematic for the tone and the structure. They each told a story, and part of a larger story. They were all still Mass Effect games though, and felt like Mass Effect games to me.

And there's definitely a good few lessons learned from the 3 games, and those learnings are put forward into the next Mass Effect. This won't tell you much anything about the game, its story, its structure, or anything, but it is a Mass Effect game. :)

Your response is much appreciated :D

I hope we get that sense of discovery and atmosphere of ME1 back and with the artistic perfection of ME3 (not to be confused with "artistic integrity" :S) and hopefully without taking all my attention to a minimap with little blips everywhere instead of discovering what we need to find through the visuals and looking into the horizon in the game-world itself.

I hope at least those are lessons Bioware learns from DAI (if you consider them flaws at all...?)

EDIT: Avoiding double-posting

I can't quite remember it now. I think the more time passed the more steamy hateful it became though because the realization of how many things fell apart at the ending came first as a singular disappointment but then many more finished up and many more errors were found and with Extended Cut some even got more angry because the epilogues (synthesis in particular) went even more out of its way to tell a message that was the antithesis to everything we thought the story was about.

DAI forums are nothing like the ME3 were.  It's like comparing a summer shower to a hurricane.

Those were dark days.

True enough. I think we all got very attached by the end of the series. But I think we all know it wasn't really Shepard dying that got people picking up pitchforks, at least for most people  ;)

So, how long until we get to see and discuss a lot of awesomeness  ;)

I think PAX East is a very strong possibility from my point of view. Announce the basic details, like title and setting, and follow up a few months later with a big teaser at E3. Sounds good to me  :D

at this point I don't think the game will come out until Q4 2016. and just a short teaser (like DA I) at E3...

I thought the projections were 2Q16.  Be patient, Newt.  Rushed games suck, and lack depth or interaction and story.  Waiting may be good on this case.

I for one am not in a rush or feeding into the hype.  Last time I did that was ME3, and I got burned.

It's worth keeping in mind that for ME2 and ME3, the game was revealed less than a year before the original launch dates.

(ME2 in February 2009 for a January 2010 release, and ME3 in December 2010 for a planned launch in late 2011)

Even DA:I was only talked about in late 2012, with an expected release date in late 2013, before it got delayed by an entire year.

BW not talking about the game now really tells us nothing about their plans for a launch date. Some games are revealed and launched within six months, some have two years of marketing.

ME series could use more Boston, Styx, and Journey in the Dev pen, IMO. :)

It wasn't too bad until the Final Hours was released. I mean, a lot of people were upset, but it was more shock than vitriol. Once the Final Hours App info was released, two things happened: 1) people released IT wasn't happening and 2) people found out Mac Walters did the ending, along with the infamous napkin outline. This gave people a target for their rage and the forums never really recovered from there.

I still remember the entire Mass Effect 3 forum was shut down by Chris Priestly for a few hours to make it clear the witch hunt against Mac wasn't going to be tolerated. As bad as DA: I's forums can get they aren't really any worse than Origins' forums, and much much better than DA2 and obviously ME3's forums were.
