ME1 had huge customization - I miss it. The inventory system was scrapped, sadly. It was clunky, but it gave us so many options that it was just insane - not to mention the ability to carry around a LOT of cash if need be. Some of those parts sold for big money.
So, in ME1 you could have different gear for each and every squadmate. There were like 9 sets for Tali, and so many for Wrex and Garrus that it was just perfect. Battlemaster series for the Krogan (made by the Geth armory for some reason) looked so cool that I always HAD to get them. The set I got for Garrus was the armor that looked just like Nihlus'. Liara wore human armor, so that part was easy - and some of those armor types were not only insanely powerful, but looked really cool - like Fists armor.
Not only did you customize everyone's armor, but how the mods were on their armor - in the end the number of possibilities was impressive. Then you got to mod all of their guns, and what three things you wanted on their weapons.
ME2 had little of that greatness. Standard armors, and a few choices for Shepard. No pattern, patter one, two - and ohh-so-not-cool camo. They also felt far less powerful than the ME1 gear.
I hope they find a better balance this time. In ME1 I was a Spectre. I had access top of the line gear - it made our position feel really special. In ME2 I was a Spectre - and got nothing for it but some dialogue changes.
I hope they bring back the versatility of ME1 and add it to the strong points of the rest of the series - all of the games had something to contribute. For ME: Next they need to look at the strong points of each of the games and see if they can bring it all to the table. That might be really hard to do though - and a pipe dream, but I can hope, right?
