I don't know if anyone else here or at BioWare is aware, but NASA has created a Warp Field and verified their findings in a vacuum.

That's not how Star Trek's warp drive works.

I'd be surprised if it was  :P

You know, I need more coffee in the morning before I read up on my quantum physics.

However, it was a good read and a lot of fun.  Apply the principles of the EM drive in the ME universe and you could have something pretty nifty.

I wonder, would wide spread use of warp engines cause any damage to the fabric of space?

Second question: Would a warping spacecraft passing near a planet or asteroid interfere with it's orbit?

Yes. TNG 7x09 Force of Nature

No

The fabric of space cannot be damaged, for one - as far as we know.  Consider a singularity, for instance.  If anything can tear it (space) open, a spinning AGN (Active Galactic Nucleus) should be able to do the trick.  Yet, AGNs have been known to collide and there is no tearing.

For question 2, Newtonian physics holds all of the answers.  A "warping" spacecraft would interfere with a planet or an asteroid - but the truly important question becomes which one is the bug and which one is the windshield.

That TNG episode was generally ill-regarded. The notion was never again brought up, either. Heh.

The warp speed limit is mentioned several times in TNG and in the Voyager-pilot.

Before we speculate whether this development violates the laws of the Star Trek universe, we should remember that it just based on what some random guy on some forum said, not what NASA have said.  If you are going to accept what some random guy says on a forum, I would like to announce the discovery homeopathic cold fusion, which the lamestream media isn't covering because they're too scared of Big Fusion.

Actually NASA has confirmed their findings with the EM drive in a vacuum.

Quote:

Nasa has been testing the technology for a while and it confirmed on 29 April that researchers at the Johnson Space Center have successfully tested an electromagnetic propulsion drive in a vacuum, and although it did not seem possible, the technology actually works.

"Thrust measurements of the EmDrive defy classical physics' expectations that such a closed [microwave] cavity should be unusable for space propulsion because of the law of conservation of momentum," Nasa's José Rodal, Jeremiah Mullikin and Noel Munson wrote in a Nasa Spaceflight blog.

Quote:

The researchers explain that the reason why Shawyer's EmDrive models and EmDrive experiments carried out by Chinese researchers had been criticised in the past was because none of the tests had been carried out in a vacuum.

Physics says particles in the quantum vacuum cannot be ionised, so therefore you cannot push against it, but Nasa says Shawyer's theory does indeed work.

"Nasa has successfully tested their EmDrive in a hard vacuum – the first time any organisation has reported such a successful test. To this end, Nasa Eagleworks has now nullified the prevailing hypothesis that thrust measurements were due to thermal convection," the researchers wrote.

Nasa says its researchers joined forces with a large community of enthusiasts, engineers, and scientists on several continents to discuss EmDrive theories on the NasaSpaceflight.com EmDrive forum, and "despite considerable effort within the NasaSpaceflight.com forum to dismiss the reported thrust as an artefact, the EmDrive results have yet to be falsified".

Quote:

Nasa researchers posted on the Nasa Spaceflight forum that when lasers were fired into the EmDrive's resonance chamber, some of the laser beams had travelled faster than the speed of light, which would mean the EmDrive could have produced a warp bubble.

A post by another user analysing the EmDrive experiment said "the math behind the warp bubble apparently matches the interference pattern found in the EmDrive".

I'll wait for the official NASA press release, if it's all the same.

Well, fair enough. Let's not forget how fast and loose it was played with, though. What happened when Paris broke the warp barrier? Bad things, but not in a good way.

Folks, seriously, that conversation shouldn't even get started in the Twitter thread.

Jos/Josh/Jose/Joseph @Sjosz

Working together closely when you're implementing the proper art for a mission with an artist is important. Be willing to compromise.

Jos/Josh/Jose/Joseph @Sjosz

Nothing has to be 100% exactly on the dot like you have it. Everyone you work with has really cool ideas to bring to the table.

Jos/Josh/Jose/Joseph @Sjosz

And they will always be more aware of what would be cool or necessary for their parts of the development process..

Jos/Josh/Jose/Joseph @Sjosz

I find my job, while providing the initial blueprint for a mission layout, is mostly about accommodating everyone's needs and wants. #space

Jos/Josh/Jose/Joseph @Sjosz

Cinematic designer needs a bit more open space for their cool shot? Make it work. Artist needs a bit more space for their vista? Done.

Ultimately, 95% of all creative hills are not worth dying on when working on content with other people in other disciplines. #space

Barrett Rodych @ForgedPixels

What if it's a terrain hill in your level with a kill volume on it #toometa?

Jos/Josh/Jose/Joseph @Sjosz

That's why I said 95%, Barrett. Because I knew you were going to be a smart-ass.

Besides, if you're willing to help your collaborators reach their goals, they'll help you reach yours, too. Collaboration is an art form.
