The first trailer features a female and then a short time before the release have a trailer for the male. Isn't that what happened to femshep for ME3?

I like the idea of having a reversible cover, but I would have it where it ships with the female on the cover and if someone wants the male, he/she has to reverse the cover

Why can't it be the other way around? I'm all for equality, but seeing people say that the trailers should be female then have one male one before release and having a woman on the cover; isn't that the same as having a man on the cover and in all the trailers? That's not equality. But you guys don't want gender equality, you just want female superiority for some reason. Interchange the genders in the trailers/promo art and maybe have both genders on the front of the box.

And seeing as the majority of gamers are male, they're going to identify way more with a male character on the cover and trailers. The people obsessed with playing as women are a vocal minority, gotta thing about the wider audience that EA is pandering to.

Mako will be the "face" of MENext and avoid the whole problem.

Heard it here first  :D

Do you have something against a woman being shown on the cover of a video game? Was it fair showing maleshep in those trailers and not having a couple those for femshep before ME3 was released?

Clearly you didn't read what I said. I'm all for equality, but two wrongs don't make a right. Having the cover character be female in all trailers and promotional stuff is just as bad as it being a male. It would better for both genders to be used equally. It seems more like you have something against using men in promotion, or you're just one of those weirdos who's obsessed with female representation in video games. More women in games is great, but why would they have to replace all the men?

Equality, not superiority.

You could consider that equality though. Take the marketing for the last game, ME3, and reverse it this time around. You'll still have both the male protagonist and the female but perhaps the latter would take a bit more of the center stage. No real change.

Flip it round again the next time.

What do you think would happen then? Lower sales, higher or equal?

Or, we could stop reducing people to a single trait.

Like I said, two wrongs don't make a right. If having Sheploo as the centre of marketing last time was sooo bad (apparently), then surely it would just as bad having the female protagonist be the centre of marketing this time round? Just give them an equal amount of screentime. Hell, put them in the same trailer.

And if the female was the face of all the marketing, you can bet a lot of the wider audience would not identify with them. It wouldn't lead to a HUGE amount of sales lost, but it would surely have an effect. More female gamers would probably be interested, but they don't make up the majority of the gaming community, do they?

I can see where you are coming from, but you seem to be coming from an angle that assumes we are already equal, in terms of representation. We are not.

There is no big problem with how well men are represented in games, while there is a big problem with how women are represented in games. And thus, from my point of view, using a male protagonist as the face of the new game would be okay, but not really achieve anything in terms of representation (unless he was a person of colour, LGBTQ+ etc.). On the other hand, using a female protagonist as the face of the next game would be a nice way of doing a little something about the problem of how well women are represented in games. In RPGs, male characters are often viewed as the 'default' or the 'canon' character. Why not the female one for once? That's all I'm saying.

My argument for having the face of the new game being a person of colour rather than a white person, or being an LGBTQ+ person rather than a straight one etc. would be exactly the same.

Also, if I am not mistaken, women actually make up almost half of PC and console gamers.

I suspect that if it was the same marketing as done for ME1/2 (and nearly 3) that you wouldn't be posting this.

As for this- you can bet a lot of the wider audience would not identify with them - what exactly are you basing this on apart from your own viewpoint?

Ever suspect that having the female lead promoted more might make the game stand out more?

Mako will be the "face" of MENext and avoid the whole problem.

Heard it here first  :D

I see the trailer now:

Fade into a desolate ice planet. A long flat expanse of ice fills the shot.  Artic winds swirl and eddy.  A figure appears on the distant horizon, walking towards the camera.  In a series of dissolves, the figure gets closer, battling against the growing blizzard.  As it nears, we see it is wearing a full space suit.  Finally, the figure is right before us, shoulders and helmet taking up the majority of the screen.  The figure loosens the clasps securing the helmet, and drops out of shot to take it off.

When it stands up again, we see that, instead of a face, there is a head-sized Mako in its place.  The figure gives a casual salute and guns the Mako's engines a couple of time in greeting.

The screen goes black, and the following titles fade in:

That last paragraph was all I needed for an answer.

Yeah, and I'm saying - why not just make them equal? Why not have both a man and a woman representing the game if you want women to be better represented in gaming? That's all I'd want. Having just one or the other doesn't achieve anything either, in my eyes.

As for the LGBT stuff, again it's something EA would likely not want to risk. You can't judge someone's sexuality based off a still image of them  - so they'd have to show a gay scene in a trailer or something to show that the "face of the game" is gay/bi. And that would probably cause some kind of shitstorm that I seriously doubt EA and Bioware would want to deal with. Having the choice for that stuff in the game is good, then people who want to see it get to see it. But yeah, I don't think EA want to risk something like that messing up their marketing. I really hope none of this paragraph came off as homophobic.

But I'd be totally on board for having a non-white default character.

I've always wondered if there are some blokes who read books or watch films / TV shows which do not have a predominately male lead ever go 'nah, can't identify with this' and stop watching / reading.

Seems such a limited worldview.

They could also do what they did with the Inquisitor on DAI's box: Have it be so the person could be male or female.

Is it weird that I still want a face to the franchise? The way default Shepard was?

And does anyone agree with me?

No it's not weird.

I think it was a good thing for the brand to have an "iconic" face identifiable with the franchise.

As someone that played as FemShep too it would have been nice if BioWare had a done a model for her like with Sheploo.

Hahaha the buttrage here is amazing

Gotta love the dudebros who ~don't care~ for three games that Sheploo gets all the attention then absolutely freak out and start screaming about "female superiority" when it's suggested that Bioware make a female character the centre of the advertising for once. Pretty ~cool~ that all those dudes are demanding "equality" now that somebody is proposing a female cover, and not for the last ten years when it was all maleShep.

Newsflash: this is not a plot to deprive you of your games or cultural representations of masculinity. Nobody is implementing a vast feminist conspiracy. There will still be literally an overwhelming majority of men on your videogame covers even if one series chooses to do something different.

For the record, I expect them to do something similar to Inquisition and have the character in gender-neutral armour with a helmet on. But the reactions to one suggestion have been absolutely absurd and you seriously need to get some perspective.
