it always bugs me that people see N7 as a Shepard ONLY thing. its not! its an organization that means so much more, yes i will always think of shepard but dont disregard any protag and call him/her a shepard 2.0, its disrespectful in my opinion, shepard is- to date the most famous n7 soldier but he/she isnt the 1st one to land such position! i think its unfair to judge a protag we know nothing about let alone that we can shape and make our own.. :/ maybe its just me, but it always bother me when people push that idea around. N7 is more than just shepard.
Sure. They've made that clear.
ME1 - (legacy) Anderson, Shepard
ME2 - Shepard (focus on him), (impression) Legion
ME3 - Shepard, (fail) Leng, (fake) NotShepard, (sorta) Anderson, (recruit) Vega, (drafted) N7 teams in MP
While ME2 was a 'streamlining' of much story that ME1 first proposes us with, ME3 really is an expansion of many concepts, N7 included.
But that doesn't change that for many, maybe still most, the first thing thought of for 'N7' is 'Commander Shepard'.
And for many more, it may not be the first thing, but its one of the first things.
So one way or another, if Bioware wants to have a smooth story transition, I'd say they at the very least would have to respect their precedent and have Shepard as noted as important to 'N7'. This doesn't have to be a biggg deal, but it should be understood. Shepard wasn't just N7, he was the BEST N7 and he MADE N7 INTO something that may be more than a military code. This is important stuff. Its up to players and devs whether they want it just noted in a smaller way like Grissom (for example), or something that weaves into the script and characterization like Anderson (in some way).
Bioware certainly hasn't been communicating the message that we won't be looking back in the next game, just that we'll be constantly moving forward. N7 may not be just Shepard, but he's certainly been the biggest thing of it and the one who made it more than himself in the galactic POV.
