On hindsight, that sounds a bit illegal.

People expecting to play 10-20 hours?    Nay nay fluffy.  Bump that sucker up another decimal.

                                                                                                 <<<<<<<<<<(0)>>>>>>>>>>

LOL! You mean:

15 hours = main story arc

80 hours = exploration

05 hours = putzing around in a hub, bar, stores or looking for somthing

----------

100 hours total

Wow!

Takes me an hour or so to create my character's face. I guess he used the stock one.

Also, from ME3, the game starts with an intro and tutorial of a sort, which takes up 20mins? Then he went exploring. Notably, nothing was said about how excited he was playing for one hour or the control mechanics for the game device (ie: PC or console).

Anyway, I expect another in-engine cinematic trailer in a couple of months.

True.  Or something like that.  I don't care it's 40 hours main story, 55 hours exploration, and 5 hours putzing around.  In fact, I would prefer it if it were that.  All that I'm trying to say with that post is don't be expecting another short(ish) game from BioWare.  Expect it to be a long involved game, similar to DA:I.

There are reasons why I keep drawing so many comparisons to DA:I, but the main reason I suppose is that we've all played it.  Love it, hate it, this game is gonna have distinct similarities.  Namely in how long we're gonna play it and the War Table/Room.  I'm sure there are some others, (like Skyhold, which I never found that fascinating myself) that I'm just not thinking of.

Ohh ohhh, I've got one.  Crafting.  Crafting is gonna play a role in this game if the leak is to be believed.  That was never a part of any previous ME game.  Sure, we could upgrade things, but never craft them.

EDIT :  Oh, and that brings up another point.  Resource gathering methods.  In DA:I one of the most clunky and nonessential ways of gathering resources was the ping.  Running through a forest?  Ping all along the way.  In this game, could we just have the ping always turned on, and then as soon as someone damages us it automatically turns off?  And have it show on the map with a range (or rather, a widest area distance that the passive ping can reach) and an indicator (and direction) above our head that is color coded for which mineral it is?

The exploration is supposedly going to be more "optional". I'm thinking they heard how Inquisition's was received and are adjusting maybe? I'm personally fine with it so long as there are interesting things to do :)

I'm just thinking, is 80 hours of exploration supposed to sound like a bad thing? Exploration is my favorite, so 80 hours of that sounds awesome to me!

Of course, I also enjoy collecting things, which reading posts here leads me to believe is strange. But until action/adventure platformers make a comeback, I will take as many of those elements in my RPGs as I can, dang it! Now excuse me while I keep refreshing the Psychonauts 2 campaign page (98% funded!)

Optional is fine.

Also fine are rumours of Remnant "treasures" or possibly accompanying scientific digs at one's discretion.

If I remember correctly, Laidlaw said he was surprised that gamers explored the "vast areas" and didn't plan for that. An annoying thing to say since he and others stressed the vastness of DA:I.

Since ME:A is massive, according to Bio, then let's hope the game designers will skirt the DA:I pitfall and actually plan for gamers to explore in a non boring capacity. Simply exploring with a Mako will soon make it boring, regardless of the vistas ahead.

Well, I'm thinking that we'll have bombs to disarm, etc....   Stuff outside of the mako.  That is, again, if the leak is to be believed.

My nightmare MEA is dozens of hours of filler Mako driving with no/next to no story. And no, small text box collecting barely counts as story to me.

I'm playing ME1 right now and its only for my PC version completionism (I'm even reading a chart to make sure every planet is explored 100%) but I promise myself to never touch this stuff again. Please remember the concept of fun, even for people who want to 'max out' your designed 'hours of gameplay'.

'Strike Teams' can be okay if there's a enough 'hand crafting' of levels, enough unique dialogue (if they're like DAI MP that is NOT enough) that pertains to plot and world building, not just party combos, and unique combat setups and rewards. Ideally even a story-related choice at some point too. We could choose to automate this process and thus have a shorter game and less 'maxing out' of rewards, or we can enter on our own and max out things (story, upgrades). We can choose to play alone (NPC party) or with other players, and there might be an optional repeatable element with higher difficulties that expand into its own 'MP game' if we wish. But we can get all rewards in-game SP, ultimately, and within reasonable enough hours (I consider anything within 150-200 hours reasonable but I know ME games SP modes have normally been more like 40-60 hours max, without DLC). Further rewards could come through a mix of SP DLC and a more grindy MP.

That's almost my ideal. I understand that MEA may not hit this ideal. And I know such an item system sounds problematic.

I would choose to do it another way.

Remember when they said that enemy forces could invade your camps, take over your strongholds in DA:I?   Remember how that never ever happened?  For me, at least.

  • Have a certain number of optional objectives
  • Once you take them over you have 16 hours until they are fair game.
  • Once they are fair game, /rnd 100 with each mark being 25% every two hours (or mark).  So, 16 hours 0%, 18 hours 25%, 20 hours 50%, 22 hours 75% and then cap it at 75%.
  • The percentage chance is the enemy's chance at taking it over.
  • So, then, when you come back to the game, you find that say half of your optional objectives have been taken over.  Of course, this all assumes that you can log into the game with your strike team and have the multiplayer be drop in/drop out.

Now, it would kind'a suck if I logged in a week after being away and I found out that I had 32 optional missions that had all been taken over by enemy forces.  There, I think I would do raids (something bigger with more hp, hits harder, more synch kills, etc) and divide that number by three.  Say that they took over about 10 of your areas and that solidified their power base.

Just planting seeds.

Not exactly. He said that he was surprised that so many gamers felt like they had to immediately drop the story thread and do every single minor sidequest that popped into their quest list. That's what led to the whole "Get Out of the Hinterlands" thing.

It's that completionist mindset that some have that definitely contributes to that. They can't leave an area without trying to do everything possible. I know I felt that way my first time playing Inquisition, for my Inquisitor's after that I realized I had to apply some restraint, for example do the side missions I can and come back when I'm ready to do the others.

Yeah, my first play through was also a fairly completionist one at first, but after maybe 10 hours in the Hinterlands I caught on and let a lot of side content fall by the wayside. My second play through was a lot more evenly paced.

I can only talk for myself, but I think ME2/3 and DA2 in part gave me this mindset "I have to complete everything before continuing the main quest" since most of the areas had to be completed before finishing the quest, since there wasn't any chance to go back to certain places post mission and take forgotten stuff or finish little fetch quests.
