Nobody said it's wrong to not be excited about DA4. That depends on people's opinion on the previous game/games and where the franchise is going (despite the shortcomings of DAI, the direction they're going with the plot, as well as the reveals in both the end of the game and the dlc is very interesting to me, expecially because I wasn't expecting them to reveal that some of the Thedosian's various 'gods' are real).

Though it was obvious Bioware was going to develop another one.

Talking about dlc : honestly, doing big revelations on dlc is really a lack of respect for people who bought the game and spent hours on it.

Like when I saw the bad guy on DAI and asked me "who's that? wtf, Varric seems to know him from DA2.. *asking people around*.... wait, my Hawke did what ???". So it was form DA2 dlc, dlc I never bought because I like DA but not enough to spend more money on it. It's a way to push people to buy more and more stuff and it's wrong to do it that way "don't buy and I you will miss important things".

They did that on ME2 with "Arrival". As much as I loooove ME (and bought everything I could, which include all the dlc) I felt a bit sad they did the link from ME2 to ME3 with a dlc. Many friends at the beginning of ME3 where like "whaaaaat ? Shepard has a trial? what happened ?"... yes, buy "Arrival" ....

Not really respectuful for the players IMO.

DA4... ?  I prefer a new MEA trilogy. I can't get enough of space <3

That's silly. Every story is going to have a plot. If you don't buy the story, you don't get the plot. There's nothing disrespectful about it.

I doubt a DLC where Hawke and friends went out for ice cream and nothing notable happened would be well-received.

I still really don't know what happened in between. Something about batarians I believe.

I buy each game 60 - 70 euros on my country. It a lot of money (at least to me, I'm not rich), so I'm waiting to have everything inside concerning the main plot. To me, dlc should be for side stories, like Omega, Like Citadel, Like shadow Broker. You can play those stories but if you don't you won't miss importaht stuff.

It's a mission you play alone, and it ends bad for Batarians who lose plenty of people on a colony. Not really shepard's fault to me, destroying the relay that caused the tragedy was the only solution to delay Reapers :/

Also "Arrival" is really not the best dlc of ME trilogy.

I think what they're talking about is major plot points that having bought just the original game would'a missed.  I can see Shepard having a trial, but not for a bunch'a batarians.  That kind'a took me by surprise, but at the same time it made a whole lot more sense.

I didn't buy the DA DLC's, and I don't feel that they've left anything out of them.  So, all in all, I would say that they don't do major plot points, they can do something to make it a tad clearer or put a steel edge on something.  I could, and have, played through ME1-3 without any DLC and felt like nothing was missing.

Jos NOT @ GDC @Sjosz

Today starts off on a documentation and feedback note. Sometimes you gotta write the words before you can make the things.

Jos NOT @ GDC @Sjosz

Documentation is an important part of the process! Being able to articulate a design or feedback, or the way a mission works, is key.

Jos NOT @ GDC @Sjosz

People who approve work to be done don't always have time to sit down and talk, so having something in document form is super handy for that

Jos NOT @ GDC @Sjosz

Additionally, writing out your designs for mechanics and missions helps form a concrete plan for building these things, too.

Jos NOT @ GDC @Sjosz

Being able to refer to a document on how things are intended helps those who help you build it, as well. Documentation is important!

Jos NOT @ GDC @Sjosz

And since most things in a game like Mass Effect get built by multiple people, maintaining a central vision through documentation helps.

Jos NOT @ GDC @Sjosz

Example: Any mission I build has at least a writer, cinematic designer, artist, audio artist, level designer, QA analyst who work on it.

Jos NOT @ GDC @Sjosz

And that doesn't even cover each of those people's managers, and the core leadership representatives for those disciplines, who approve it.

Jos NOT @ GDC @Sjosz

Imagine if you had to communicate your mission to all those people just verbally, and try to maintain the scope and vision that way.

Jos NOT @ GDC @Sjosz

Now imagine one of the people working on it can no longer work on it, and someone else has to step in and take over. Documentation!

Jos NOT @ GDC @Sjosz

That was a little nugget of Every Day Game Development, and also me shirking my responsibilities for actually documenting things.

Jos NOT @ GDC @Sjosz

Documentation is not the super fun part of a project, but it ultimately serves an important function in actually getting things done.

It seems to be Jos and not many others at this point.

I remember even before DA:I was officially announced, the devs would be tweeting about stuff they were seeing at sprint review days. A few years ago the studio leadership on Andromeda (Yanick Roy, Aaryn Flynn) were also tweeting a lot more. Aaryn posted on NeoGAF like... three times.. about a year ago and then stopped.

I don't think a dev apart from Jos, Allan Schumacher and a couple of the writers (Ann Lemay?) have posted in the ME forums for years either.

Snip

Jos NOT @ GDC @Sjosz

First, thanks for the latest tweets.

You mentioned audio artist.

Don't you mean an audio technician responsible for lip+speech synching, background noises, beeps when pushing a button or weapon sounds.. etc?  I'm thinking music studios' audio techs/directors or whatever fancy title they like to promote. Audio artist sound bizarro to me.

You also mentioned a mission team group.

That is very informative... in the sense of resources and man hours requirements + the necessary collaborative efforts + scheduling.  This implies that the missions are pre-approved from a game design perspective. So, can you tell us if a "story board" + the writer team is the first phase of game design?

Well done as usual, I would request if you get the chance sometime to do one of these with Caroline Livingstone the ace voice over director.  I think that would be very interesting.
