I'm starting a Bg 2 run now, and I have settled on playing a thief type class.
Before I get to rolling, Should I have a 4 man, 5 man, or 6 man party? And what is better for this, fighter/thief, Kensai -> Thief, or Pure thief (kit of course).
I am not doing a Spellcasting type, because when it comes to spells, F/M and C/M are my faves with WM making a close second.
I started a Kensai -> Thief, but I messed up when dualclassed at level 8. So yeah, he's deleted.

You have to ask yourself do you want to be stuck hiding all the time or do you want to be part of the action?
Pure class thief is usually going to be hidden most of the time either trying to backstab or scouting for the group. Fighter/thief multi is pretty much the better of all the possible combination far as being melee efficient and handling the thieving skills. The dual class options are normally more specialize, but a few can be flat out game breakers. If you are playing ToB included there is really no reason not to dual at lvl 13 if doing a Kensai/thief since you get the last 1/2 attack allowing you to reach 10 apr with improved haste. Not only will you be doing insane damge but you are a cappable fighter when your not hidden. Now the down time will put you close to the end of SoA if you go this route. Now if your just wanting to play a backstabber you could also look into the stalker kit for ranger. They are only 1x multipler lower than a thief, but retain full ranger and fighter combat progression. You also recieve bonus spells from the arcane spellbook, such as haste and minor spell deflection. On top of your normal ranger spell book. Top this all off with a disadvantage of not being able to wear armor higher than studded leather. Far as ToB goes only puts you 2 ac points behind a full plate wearer, which is not all that important as most bosses are going to hit ya regardless of your ac anyway, most of the leather armor has nice perks available.
Far as size of the party I would strongly recommend 4 personally. Especially if your dead set on being a thief. This opens up multiple angles as to which NPC to take along. Also allows you to do a classic party of 1 thief, 1 fighter, 1 mage, 1 cleric... Aka Edwin, Korgan, and Viconia with your Charname Thief. Find it ironic only the evil side gets the classic party makeup.

Well, I really wanted to make sure I was getting the most out of my thief. So if I went pure thief, I would be evil just for laughs. But I'm probably going to lean more towards a fighter/thief. Backstabbing I can do now (Thank you DA:O and Reckoning!), but my previous runs i had thieves only for traps and locks. Which is interesting that I didn't use everything at my disposal. I later learned from DA:O that if you use everything you have and don't be stingy, fights get easier. They stay fun, but the do get easier.
I prefer backstabbing with invisibility if that helps. I'm thinking of Fighter/Thief a lot more now, since I am more of an upfront player. I suck at the stealth stuff sometimes. (I'm looking at you skyrim)

The fighter/thief builds come down to whether you have modded grand mastery or not. If you don't have mods, a kensai dual can get 5 * in a weapon, while a multiclass F/T can only get 2 *. The tweak pack has two components, called true GM, and multiclass GM. True GM gives you all the advantages that GM was supposed to give you, but didn't in vanilla. Multiclass GM on the other hand is more contentious, as it makes multiclass builds stronger than they were already, and pretty much makes the kensai dual pointless.
The final point is HLAs. The thief kits and kensai dual only get thief HLAs, while the multiclass build gets both fighter and thief HLAs. Multiclass is therefore stronger.
Note that without the fixpack, Thieves were allowed multiple selections of the Assasinate HLA, With the fixpack, you only get one. Assasinate allows each hit to be a backstab, so works really well with true grand mastery, 5 backstabs per round is hectic, and with a casting of haste or potion of speed, this becomes 10. Now set a couple of time traps and do this while time has stopped for gorgonzola surprise.

IMO the only pure Thief worth playing is Bounty Hunter... the special traps makes a strong solo & group player.

Call me strange, but I like the pure thief class (e.g., no kit). No penalty in points to distribute (yep, you do bounty hunter and assassin) and no penalty to his backstab abilities (looking at you swashbuckler). This means he actually gets skilled with a variety of thief skills in reasonable amount time, set snares, detect illusions, etc. Anything left over he can put in hide in shadows.
The bounty hunter is not a bad kit of course -- just saying pure thief is a good choice for a party too.

The kits are good solo or with smaller groups, anything above 4 and a pure thief starts looking pretty appealing, but by the time you hit higher levels, you end up wasting those points.
I've never seen the point of a swashbuckler, why play a thief without backstabbing, but if that's your criteria, then the assasin actually gets a boost to backstab multiplier over a pure thief.
