Yuck. They look like baleen. It's the one instance where whitewashing (literally) might be deemed acceptable.

That said, people can do whatever the damn they want with their own game. If they consider turning one of the few non-white principal characters white to be ok, and actually react with surprise when thinking people call them on their BS, good for them. I think it says a lot about them as a person.

I think Isabela is a lot better with her dark skin. It fits lore, it suits her, and it makes her just damn sexy.

Using mods to make her white is racist. Even if it's what they prefer. If she was real, and I asked her to whiten her skin to make her more attractive, I'd be considered racist, right?
So using logic...racism.

I think it's going a bit far calling it racist.  Bioware made her skin darker for DA2 and that wasn't racist, was it?  So modding her to make her resemble her original appereance in Origins should't be considered racist either.

I've also seen people use mods in Origins to make her resemble her DA2 appearence, is that racist? (same thing right?).

As everyone has already said, her skin was always dark. It's about the same skintone, and no, chaning her appearance in Origins isn't racist, because they are just changing her skin to appear the tone it is in the lighting. It's racist when they change it because she doesn't fit their standard of beauty.

In film adaptations, it's racist to change a character's ethnicity. So why is it not racist in video games?

well video game characters arn't real.  And it wasn't considered racist in Tropic Thunder when Robert Downy Jr did it...  But I do see your point and I am not trying to get in a blackface debate like in Always Sunny, so I will try and take my leave here

(I'm also not sure how ethnicity works in DA)

Hm.

Anyway, Isabela has always been from Rivain. The only major thing that changed with regards to her appearances was... the game engine. The screenshot downthread makes this pretty clear.

The joke in Tropic Thunder was that it was indeed racist, but only the young black actor calls him out for it, and even then it's under extreme duress.  You do know that movie is a very irreverant comedy, right???

For me, changing a character's appearance with mods feels like inserting fan fiction into the actual game.  You can make it your "head canon" that Aveline looks just like Leliana, or that Merrill has long blonde hair and no tattoos, but it's not the original intent of the devs, and I'd prefer to keep that out of my own game.

People can do what they like in the privacy of their own homes, but trying defend making Isabela white as "fixing" her or making her look "better" is pretty gross.  Everyone is entitled to their own personal ideals when it comes to attraction, but don't try to claim opinion as fact, especially on a issue like skin color.

Well IMO the default Isabela DA2 face was really ugly, and it was just the features of her face, not the shade of her skin at all (her default face was not so great dark OR pale).

Am currently looking for a mod that brings a happy medium but no luck yet. What I wanted most was something to remove the ugly texture artifacts on her outfit.

And like I said with people screaming about it being racist... well, to each their own. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions on the matter, and can do whatever they please with their games.

I thought this thread was going to be a romantic poem about Isabela.

As changeable and shifting as the sea
Her eyes a tempest, hair all tossed by wind
Now anchored here in Kirkwall's harbor's lee
A siren tempting lad and lass to sin.
Her laughter loud and free as gulls that cry
No silver fish, fast-finned, has greater grace
Than Isabela, dueling for the prize.
There's promises of pleasure writ upon her face.
But pirates bury treasure under sand
As fair as she is, I seek hidden gold
Not kisses sought, but leave to hold her hand
To sail, we two, until the sun grows cold.
She freely gives of every lovely part
Except the one I crave: her broken heart.

Oh I have one too that I wrote before DA2 even came out

Isabela
She who hails from the Rivain
mistress of the high seas,
is a tempest of hottest winds
uplifts thy sails
and tauts thy strings.

Isabela
Such a duelist of apt ability
flexible, nimble-
No sword has grazed her sun kissed skin
no man has masked her agility,
thus her daggers spare none.

Blessed is thou
who boards her ship, The Sirens Call,
for her greatest skill
is laid under the bow.
It is here
where the tallest masts are climbed
and rocking wet waves conquered.
She is a woman of taste,
with a tongue that knows no bias.
She is Isabela.

A-ha, poetry! Bravo, you two! Now this is much better than this slightly foul topic about bleaching Isabela or enforcing digital surgery on any other companions.

I suggest we hijack this thread and dedicate it to comely Isabela. Here's my dodgy two-minute haiku, at which she'd no doubt roll her eyes at.

It nails nothing to anything - it is an ignorant and demonstrably wrong assertion (in fact, it's refuted just a couple of posts down, with pictures!).

You're missing every point.

I like it , her features are more defined. Then again having seen a clip of Cortez that was just black with eyes and seen how the contrast differences between the PS3 and 360 are very different on the same TV settings it's probably the engine.

its not racist unless they hate the way Isabela is colored, but if they change her skin tone cause thats more their preference then thats not racist. but its obviously hard to tell unless the users outright say why they went with a white Isabela, i know id at least try it and see whether i want her that way, but i would be happy with both

Just because you're not lynching different people doesn't mean your not racist. Most people are racist since its a fairly normal condition, better to just accept it and try to overcome it. I know I'm a bit.

I like red heads, my favorite. I think fair skinned women, like Rose McGowan are hot. But i would never change Isabela. I love her just the way she is. I never even noticed her skin tone until i read a post on another thread. For those who have changed her; you have to ask yourself, why?

I do not care if you want to make Isabela white, green , blue or purple. I take issue with the description that comes with the mod.

"Basically, this is a complete revamp of Isabela. She is by far my favorite companion in DA2, but I couldn’t stand her overly dark… everything! (just not my type). So, I put my PS skills and patience to the test and started makin her a whole new kind of beautiful! The work was worth it cause here she is, in all her fair skinned, blonde haired and blue eyed glory."

Why does the author feel the need to reflect on her overly dark... everything and state could not stand it? Why was one of the very first mods to make Isabela white?

If you want to change any characters appearance that is fine, but why is it necessary to defend that choice on the BSN if you do it in your own game?

...Yeah, it kinda is.
They're changing her skin because they prefer her white. In reality, that's racist.
And before anyone says, "It's a video game," cinema's fiction too and race changes always get controversial.

Considering they apparently can't abide a single non-white person running around with their party, it's probably because they're racist.

They can dress it up however they like, but at the end of the day, they are saying "She's almost perfect - now if only she were white."

Well, I've always thought of Isabela as being dark skinned, with dark brown hair - basically a black person. Let's face it: BioWare sucked at making black people, at least in Origins. Even in normal sunlight, black characters always had red skin.

And it's not racist, that people have made a mod to make her skin white, I think it's purely ignorance and idiocy. I mean, c'mon, how come anyone be that dumb as to think she was supposed to be white??? Mind you, it probably is racist that they assumed normal humans/dwarves/elves in Origins must ALL be caucasin (white), and that only the kossith (Qunari) can be black.

Of course it isn't racist. Is it racist to be more attracted to one ethnicity than another? If it is then I guess I'm a racist because I like Irish, Cuban, and Sub-Saharan African girls more than I like Russian, Salvadorian, or Indian girls.

Word of God has also confirmed that the engine DA2 used doesn't render dark colored skin well. So it isn't their fault that the game simply can't process dark skin tones well.

If that is the case the tan is permanent. The developers have already stated that Isabela is dark skinned like Duncan and not white. All Riviani are dark skinned humans who range in color from dark tan to ebony.
The engine that Bioware uses does not do dark tones very well hence the character creator is deficient in creating dark skinned people.
