FanFic.net is going to be deleting every Rated M FanFiction

Ever since it was opened, Fanfiction.NET had always been a place for avid fans-- of ANYTHING-- to feel at home. To express whatever is on our minds and truly let our love for characters, plotlines and scenarios shine through.

Now all of a sudden, FF.net has decided to go through a massive upheaval and remove thousands of stories from its library, some of the best fanfics ever written, gone, never to be read again. They are removing anything involving sexual situations, or violence, or inspired by a song, the list goes on. And we as readers see this as a gross waste of talent and incredible material.

Fanfiction.net has always been a place for us writers to 'Unleash our imagination' as the tagline states, and now we are having that right to freedom of speech and expression taken away from us. Since when are they allowed to dictate what goes into our stories? They are OUR pieces of work. What if the violence or sexual content is part of the plotline? This whole situation is absurd. There are better ways to deal with 'inappropriate' content than to remove it altogether. What about adult filters? Age restrictions? There are so many other options!!So I'm asking please, for all us readers, writers, and fans alike...

STOP THE DESTRUCTION OF FF.NET!!!!
Sign this petition now!

If all of this fails you can try and use archiveofourown.org
to host you're fanfic on.

I will be spending all day sending massages to writers letting them know of the petition and the alternative website to host fanfics on

I'm not for FF.net deleting fics from their site, but they are not violating anyone's freedom of speech. It's their site, and they set the rules. If you don't like it, you can host your fics on your own site or on another site that has different rules. Freedom of speech doesn't mean you can dictate terms to FF.net.

Its great though, Freedom of Speech or not, if they delete anything including any kind of vague sexual themes or violence, there literally goes every actual serious fanfic of a mature series.

Sure you can write one about Mass Effect, but have fun with no romances, no sexual themes and more importantly no violence (What could you really write at this point?)

Totally agree with you.

As a here-and-there fanfic consumant I can tell all those "fapfics" idiots that some of the best fanfics out there are M-rated (mostly due to violence imaginaries and not for sexual content at all!) and some really great fics would be deleted if what the TO is warning holds true. Which is indeed a shameful waste of talent and source for good reads alike (some of those fanfics can give bestseller novels a run for their money I can tell you).

But seriously. I understand people have probably spent a lot of time making those but um... if I was a site owner and people began posting that. I would likely reach a point where I'd like to get rid of them.
EDIT: The fanfics... not the people

Yeah, it’s mainly just that people ‘began posting that’ in 2002.

10 Years? What's with the site owner's sudden change of heart?

I'm going to save my own fanfic.

By posting it here, on a dedicated thread! If you agree with my idea, do the same thing!

We know. But the way you've worded your post is not entirely correct.

It's not sudden. I've been on the site for seven years. There have been fics deleted periodically due to reports made against them. They're finally catching up on all the backlogs.

I did it intentionally.

From the front page of fanfiction.net:

Please note we would like to clarify the content policy we have in place since 2002. FanFiction.Net follows the Fiction Rating system ranging from Fiction K to Fiction M. Although Fiction Ratings goes up to Fiction MA, FanFiction.Net since 2002 has not allowed Fiction MA rated content which can contain adult/explicit content on the site. FanFiction.Net only accepts content in the Fiction K through Fiction M range. Fiction M can contain adult language, themes and suggestions. Detailed descriptions of physical interaction of sexual or violent nature is considered Fiction MA and has not been allowed on the site since 2002.

Follow the rules that you agree to when you upload a story to their site, and it won't be taken down. Even if it's rated Mature.

For those who've seen their FF's deleted, I suggest moving your works to archive-of-our-own.com (also known as AO3).

Nice site, looks a little neater than fanfic.net

AO3 requires an invite to be able to join and the waiting list is somewhere up to November. If anyone’s got an extra invite, feel free to send me one…

No, I meant the OP. To say that ALL M-Rated fics will be deleted is a pretty tall order.

I'm not seeing this MA rating they're complaining about; I can only select stories from K to M anyway?

OP Has posted in error. HE is talking about MA rating which has not been allowed on Fanfiction since 2002. M rated are still allowed.

Is there a reason they have that rule anyway? Haven't really seen that on other websites, even the ones that are only for specific fandoms.

Phew. My story on FF.net is rated M, not MA.

Still, it's irritating to have such an open and usable service like FF.net suddenly make this change. I'll be looking into this more so I can have more information before I make any real judgements.

EDIT: They mention that they do not allow MA rated stories, but they've kept the rating? I don't understand this. Is it negligence on their part or a trap?
