So i was in a match -- random/gold - with three people of N7~ 100.....  And not from deliberatly not promoting either....  But - that said - they were holding their own.
we failed in round 6 -- i couldn't quite carry that hard against the waves of phantoms.  scores of
46k (me - Asari Adept)
30k (the geth engineer)
and 12 and 16k respectively for the asari vanguard and the vorcha sentinel.

I'm really inclined to message them and tell them that - while they kicked way more ass than i was expecting (A) their hold-out on that map was a bad choice... (condor - the l-shaped cover at the bottom... left(?) of the map ... great visibility - but you're downhill of everyone attacking you - meaning they can shoot you over cover) and then personal suggestions for each
(A) geth engineer - try not to overload right after the adept warps someone -- wait until the bio explosion detonates..
(B) the asari vanguard - stasis on the phantoms (i was the only one stasising phantoms)
© The Vorcha - While i know you need to rack up kills fast to keep your bloodlust stacks up to be useful in gold - try to stay closer to the team - the enemy will come to us -- and reviving you in the midst of all the enemies is just plain not possible -- oh and to stop using all your medigels in the first three rounds when the rest of us have it mostly covered.  (actually the "stay together" and "don't use medigels in rounds 1-3" would have applied to all of them)

Would that come off as super condescending?   I remember when i was starting out - getting auto-kicked from matches i did stupid things during.... i would have appreciated someone messaging me after saying (good effort - but instead of A & B you should have done X&Y&Z)  But i know that gamers can be a touchy bunch -- especially since a couple of the people had years in their gamertag that, if they were birthdates, indicated early adolescence and therefore potentially extra touchy egos.

Do any of the more experienced players out there ever message a newbie to give them suggestions for the future?

Would any of you less experienced / less good players out there appreciate the feedback?

Personally i'm happy to play any difficulty with people new to the game - as long as they're willing to listen - and work with you to succeed - and just make an effort....  I've friended people i've seen with very low n7 scores performing poorly and told them i'm always willing to join a match with them and help them learn.

I always appreciate feedback and constructive criticism.

But I am in the extreme minority, as it seems giving advice to folks seems to garner anger more than anything else.

That's a tough one because someone needs to tell them but folks are prone to get all kinds of crazy when you tell them that kind of thing, constructive or not.

Regaurdless of your intention I can assure you that telling them they "played wrong" will make them think you're a dick.

I do sometimes.

At best, they'll listen to what I have to say and be better at the game from it.

At worst, they get on the mic and rage, which is usually just so damn funny that it's worth the time I wasted typing up the message.

Send it with an FR saying you'd like to play with them more, and generally they seem happy about it. Either that, or they're complete posterior-orifices about it and get all up in yo'face.

I am relatively new and I would appreciate any feedback. Of course, I am 36 and wouldn't take it personally. In fact, if you are on XBox, please add me. I would love to play with you. GT is same Jai Scawt.

Nah, I think those are all good tips.

I always thank more experienced players who give me tips, though. Some don't receive criticism well.

If you say something *during* the match that is helpful.  After the match, it sounds much more dickish.

I was invited to a gold match.  I told the others that I wasn't the strongest player, so they were aware I would need some pointers.  During the match, they would give advice (at extraction let's head over here so the enemies don't swarm the LZ etc.)  I found it very helpful.  If they had done this *after* the match, I would be thinking "how come you didn't say anything when it would actually help everyone?"

yeah that was my feeling on it.... like i said - i friended this guy with an n7 of like 17 the other day - because he joined my match and just did awful..... but he wasn't being a douche about it - and was obviously trying and trying to follow my lead.... So i told him "any time we're both on, i'll join a game with you.... and i'll help you do the weekend objective - just stick with me, i'll play whatever class you play" He was totally appreciative of it... but i have my doubts that others would be.

Tell the detonator to double Throw for A. I don't believe I've ever completed Condor from that spot so no it isn't a jerk move. Really there should only be one Stasis Asari in public games. There's just no organisation in them and you will end up just effing up Phantom stasises. Good thing to tell him but honestly outside of Private I always just end up trying to Stasis an immune Phantom because Randomer X already stasises her twice...

Well -- i was trying to -- 2 of the 3 had mics per the lobby -- but nobody was listening / talking / whatever.

i think this is the general consensus...

Because, going into a gold match everyone should be capable of pulling their own weight and you shouldn't need pointers. Silver is where you learn to play the game, not gold. You wouldn't jump straight into the Insanity difficulty without having ever played a Mass Effect game would you?

Besides, OP said he wants to send a message. It's kind of hard to type up a 3 paragraph essay on how badly everyone else is playing and how they can improve their game while you're being shot at trying to rez them constantly.

They invited me. Perhaps you missed that part of my statement. (I had just done a silver match with them and they are regulars on gold).  Sometimes people like to help other players.  Perhaps that is a foreign concept to you.  This is where a mic is helpful.  I have one, and many players I play with have one.  Thus, no typing.

Just because they weren't talking doesn't mean they weren't listening.  Image IPB  Sometimes I'm in a game where people want to chat about other games they like etc.  I'm basically "can't hold down the tab key to talk because I'm trying not to die over here Image IPB"  As this is my first MP, I appeciate someone offering advice during a match.  Sometimes I'll ask the pros "hey where's the best place to stand on this map?"  Especially if I see them all heading for a specific spot.

That's clearly different from the OP's situation. You explained that you weren't as experienced, and the team invited you anyway because they were experienced enough to compensate. OP did not know whether or not his team would be a liability from the start.

And as far as "helping other players" a message from a more experienced player on how to get better at the game, or explaining the game mechanics is helpful. I can't speak for everyone, but when I use my mic to give suggestions I'm generally ignored and left to solo the majority of the game because people refuse to listen. Maybe it's because they're in parties of their own, or maybe they're just retarded. I don't know.

False. He shouldn't spam Overload, true, but Warp>Overload>Throw>Throw is more damage overall.

As to whether you should do so, I say do it. If they can't take it, oh well. If they can, they'll be stronger players for it.

Ah, excellent then mics are not needed in gold afterall because people should know how to play gold already before setting foot in gold match.  Good to know.

I didn't need a mic when I started playing gold.

But then again, I also knew how all of the classes worked, had beaten the SP campaign a few times, played the other ME games and I am good at shooters and RPGs in general.

As someone who probably ranks as older than average for a pretty hardcore gamer, I can say I would accept constructive criticism gracefully assuming a couple of things:

1. The guy giving the criticism didn't do worse than me, or make stupid mistakes that cost the team dearly.
2. The things I was told made sense and I didn't completely disagree with even after giving it some thought.

I'll accept criticism if I can see that I was wrong and the suggestion was a better alternative. But there have been games other than ME3 where I was better than someone else, and got criticized for decisions when I knew the other person was wrong and I had precedents and examples to reference that backed my opinion.
