Because the kids on tvTropes are too infuriating and stupid to give me a straight answer to this question. Or they keep erasing it. Losers.

WHY the hell wasn't Alistair in Awakening, and WHY THE HELL does he not send his freaking LI any letter explaining his absence? Stupid imbecile is needed in the, as usual, Warden-less Feralden and he's not freaking there.

They keep saying, oh it's because the "stuffed shirts" in Weisshaupt demanded he come to personally let them know how the Arkdemon killing was survived, which I think is ridiculous AND it doesn't answer my second question. Especially because in my few games where he DOES survive, he certainly doesn't perform the "ritual" and therefore is none the wiser about it.

I've found no evidence or official information whatsoever to support this idea.

As if he'd tell them he screwed a witch and created the next apocalypse, anyway. DURRR.

Alistair is there at the Beginning if I recall correctly, I did the Ritual and Made Alistair King if that helps...so in my 'verse he was off doing King stuff.

And he couldn't have appeared in Awakenings as a party member if he wasn't, because that would have given the Warden whose 'verse had Alistair stay in the order an unfair advantage. (I think.)

Indeed. And in one possible scenario, Alistair is seriously ticked off at you and off becoming a professional drunkard.

I actually haven't gone through a playthrough where Alistair doesn't either become a king, or leave. Don't know what the reason for his absense would be in that scenario. Perhaps he's off to give Duncan a proper burial as he was planning in DA:O discussions. I do agree though that there should have been given some reason in this third eventuality, for his absense.

The practical reason is probably that if having alistair in Awakening with you would only be possible in one of three DA:O outcomes would seem to skew that ending as "the best" ending in some objective way, being rewarded in Awakening with an extra team mate.

Cos Anders and Alistair had similar personalities and it would have been a cheesy joke overload?

... Actually, that would have been fun!

Also the Warden's epilogue to Awakenings states that she returned home to her "one true love" (Alistair, if you romanced him.) So it's not like they broke up or anything. Besides, they don't need to be joined at the hip, they've still got a duty to do and feck knows how long it takes to get a letter across Thedas. I think you're looking into things a little too much lol.

I often wonder if Awakening wasn't the original idea for DA2 but got sidelined into an expansion because of EA's influence to copy Mass Effect instead. Anyway, they did have Alistair in Awakenings as an appearence only if he was King at the end of Origins. But you're right, they could have done a little something more to explain why he wasn't a companion with you if he wasn't king but still a Grey Warden. If Alistair was a drunk, the you should know why he was never a companion.

ok this is my question too. My FDE's Alistair stayed a grey warden with her. Six months after the events in DAO (and having already gone to Highever to set up a memorial for Duncan), she is off to get Vigils Keep up and running... What's he up to?
maybe he could send a postcard
"Weisshaupt is cold but it has a great selection of cheeses! Miss you! love A"
