If you had to pick, do you use biotic charge defensively or offensively?

Vanguards and Co. out there - the best kind of charge is probably when you can restore your shields and charge into a good group for some good old bashing (I play as a kroguard) or perhaps some nova-ing. A defensive/offensive hybrid charge is obviously the best.

But. If you had to pick, black/white style, do you normally charge more offensively (crowd control) or defensively (shield/barrier restoration)?

I do it defensively more so than anything.

Deff deff deff Defensively. The people who give the Vanguard a bad name are the ones who use it for mostly offense. I play as a Cerberus Vanguard alot and I almost never use Charge until its really needed. Its best to use it not to enter a group of enemies but to hold your ground.

Depends on the Vanguard.

If you play a defensive Broguard you're doing something wrong. A good offense is the best defense with that character.

With the Drell it's a little bit of both: Hit and run tactics work very good. And also defensive Charge to get barriers back. The same goes for the Asari, unless you're using Stasis-Charge tactics with the Bonus Power evolution.

Kroguard, all offensive. Defensive would be stupid, IMO.Phoenix? Whatever floats your boat. I don't like the character as a whole.

But if I HAD to choose. Offensive. Without a doubt.

IF you have massive lag, defensively. If you wanna die (if you are 1337 ignore this), offensively.
For lulz use offensively on Phoenix. On humans, offensively, On Krogan, offensively. Asari: defensive.

Interesting. I had a Kroguard buffed for damage and melee but found the cooldown too horrendous, so promoted and focused on weapon cooldown and outfited him with a wraith. Now I charge around constantly and feel more durable on Gold rather than ahving to take cover like after every shot.

A little of both. I love my asari vanguard/bomber. I use charge mainly to restore my sheilds, or if my team mate is being hounded by more then 1 phantom. Lift grenade + Charge + quick duck back (once or twice) + charge again. I've been very lucky in that respect that the phantom hasn't sliced my gizzard open. I continue to cross my fingers :D

Defensively most of the time, but sometimes offense just to get the objective done or revive a teammate.

Defensive. Charge, melee, shot gun blast to the face, heavy melee, shot gun blast to the face (target dead; if boss charge that sends me away from them), repeat on weakers enemies, repeat first steps on boss characters. Stay alive and your team will too.

Hmm, if I  had to pick one I'd say defensive. But then I only really play asari or ex-cerb as a vanguard (got a bit bored of the drell).

The thing is maybe for a couple of minutes it would be defensive, sticking with the team and using other powers/weapons at range, and keeping the team safe.

But then there's always a time for maybe half a minute or so when you just go on a charging rampage, to clear an area or for (offensive) survival.

I've kinda always been interested in ways to have the Vanguard classes do MORE damage at one time. To this end, I've coordinated Charges with Characters who can Reave the unholy sh*t out of everything in my path so I can blow all of the things up. And then blow up more of all the things with subsequent Nova attacks.

When I (finally) unlocked the Drell Vanguard, I was thrilled that he could set off his own BEs and then get all backflippy to evade close range counter attacks. And when I unlocked the Reegar, I gleefully handed this weapon over the my DV to chop down the things I missed.

In the SP campaign, I've played Vanguards in my first playthroughs of each of the games, and it was the first class I played when I started doing MP. And I was always focused more on damage output in the shortest amount of time.

Sure, I'm interested in ways to better defend and protect a Vanguard. But I kinda want those ways to support ways to kill all the things better.

Seeing as a almost exclusively play Asari Vanguard on a Stasis-Grenadier build... Defensive. I have 3 in Charge, and I only use it when my shields are down.

....And sometimes when I want to jump a group and bomb them to death. But mostly defensively.

Human Vanguard?...

If you are not using it offensively then you are doing it 100% wrong.

Both, but most often I use it for offense when my shields are off.
Charge then jump back.

both definitely. no need for a light loadout if your going to use it defensively really. put a talon or reegar on and you tear through all enemies on all difficulties.

The only Vanguard I still play is the Phoenix, where I use it defensively. You don't get much out of using it offensively, and doing so is even more suicide than it is with the other Human Vanguards.

As they said, depends of the vanguard. For novaguard, the best defense is offense. Doesn't mean I have to charge on the other side of the map in the face of a banshee for that. Better be offensive with the Kroguard too.Drell, Asari and phoenix: good use of cover, hit and run.

As a whole, I feel it's a class that benefits from an aggressive gameplay.

Actually both since I play Cerberus Vanguard.
I charge after a lash to set BE but I charge to restore my shields too.

Do Lash and then Charge set off a BE? I swear it doesn't. I get them to go off when I lash-smash or Smash-Lash or Smash-Charge but not when I Lash=Charge.

Both. I charge into group to stun/damage and score some headshots with Graal/Reegar, and then I charge every cooldown to keep myself alive, while still doing some damage and stuns.

I'd say that you're kind of missing the point of Charge if you just use it for defense.  It's very name is a synonym for bold offense.  Sure I'll use it to just restore my shields every once in a while, but I find myself not bothering with it unless I plan to open a big can of whoopass on my target then and there.  About the only time I'll use it just for defense is during a hack objective.  Otherwise, it's all offense.

Phoenix- i use both. depends on my mood xP
Can charge into groups and heavy mele on bronze silver and it works just like novaguard charge in and stagger everything then charge again

But its also fun to stay back and lash spam, smashing through walls when they get close >:D

They do (I've done it), but I find sometimes it's hard to tell whether Lash actually hit your target if it's something heavy like a Brute or Atlas, who will only sometimes be staggered by Lash.

You can use it defensively while still opening a can of whoopass on a target; as a Phoenix I like to go CQC with Brutes, lash+smash, dodge, shoot a few times, lash, then he wipes my shields so I charge, and that restores my shields and finishes him off  ^_^
