I have a good mic that I never use do to two "mayor" problems.
1. I have a trauma due to my first encounter with a 4th/5th rate mic/recording equipment. Since then I have had a deeply rooted fear of hearing my own voice and annoying others.
2. My voice covers an almost amazing range. I can do everything from a deep bass to the squeel of a five year old at will, but when I'm exited the pitch of my voice rises out of control making me sound like a 12 year old.

Should I use a mic anyways? and if you think I should please please offer some words of encouragement because I'm really, really, really scared of trying.

Well, if they laugh at your voice while you're warning them about that phantom closing in, they won't laugh for too long.

Use it and ignore what YOU think. Personally I don't care whether you sound like a 5 year old or a 12 year old.

Use it. Sometimes I'm the only one using my mic, and it's no fun.

I guess I'll try to dig my courage out of the trashcan and begin to use my mic then.

Use the mic. I find games where anyone is talking depressingly rare. The other day I had a great fun time even on bronze because people were actually talking. Not very seriously - it was bronze after all, and most of use were playing krogan, but it turned from something I'd joined to quickly grab a few more easy creds for a PSP into great fun.

I'm sorry to say it so blunt and by all means I mean you no insult, but do you really think it appropriate to cousel random people on an internet community on what does look like lacking self-esteem issues?

I will gladly try to give my opinion fair and honest should you truly wish to discuss your issue with me, hence I shall wait.

P.S.: Forgive my writing style, was just reading a novel for three hours straight and it shows.

Don't feel obligated to use it if you're uncomfortable. I've seen many decent games go on in complete silence.

Personally, I talk to strangers on the phone for a living. (Inbound call center) So I'm used to it, and I HATE MY VOICE TOO. But it doesn't stop me from using the mic in the game because games are more fun when people use mics. Its depressing playing games when I'm the only one with a mic on, and wondering if people even hear my Phantom warnings.

A lot of times people think I'm a pre-pubescent boy at first. I'm female, and 36. :P

I have not thought of it like that but i am a coward by nature.
PS. Please tell me what novel it is I'm a sucker for good english books I read them faster than those in my native language (350-500 pages a day).

Use it.

If you are that annoying people will just mute you.

No biggie.

You can't mute specific players on the PC version.

OK. Force auto-broadcast but never say anything. This way, I get to hear you every single time you smack your gums and sigh, and I can even hear your TV in the background! :P

On a serious note, do whatever you feel is appropriate. I rarely say anything even though I seem to be the most map aware in most of my lobbies. It never matters, and I don't really want to manage every team... Sometimes when I'm dead, I'll call out Phantoms and watch them get ignored.

I wish the games pickup would actually recognize my voice D:. Y'all are lucky. When I push to talk nothing goes through in game. Mumble, Vent, etc all work. Just not the in-game.

I have the same problem, Im younger than most people i play with. Which makes me think that i can't talk to them. In fact there have been times where i could have saved a life if i told my team i accidentally led a Banshee through a back entrance, Where she instant killed us all =(

Worst case is when you are the only one with mic and for whatever reason you produce unbearable sound [echo, bumping into mic, background noise, extreme loudness, etc...] I still say you go for it, in worst case ppl will quit the match or after match

The only time I don't like when someone uses a mic is if it's always on (annoying as anything) or if I can't understand what they're saying (because the mic does me no good).

However, as I now almost always play as a Krogan, I've found the headbutt between waves transcends language barriers.

(I swear I giggle like a 12 year old every time another Krogan and I headbutt each other like crazy between waves)

I only use mine with ppl I know. I got a head injury while deployed and stutter, stammer, and lose track of what I'm saying while saying it. I'd rather not listen to the majority of the comments I get while gaming online (it's why I don't normally play MP games).

Don't worry, that rising things happens to most people as well.
I know what you mean, and I think if others don't like it - you know what, screw them.
My laughter is not necessarily meant to be constrained merely because other people from random locations in the world are being picky about it.

Yes, I used to be self-conscious about it. Then realized, I really shouldn't mind, this is how it is, so what.
If I have to laugh, I shouldn't be forced not to merely because my voice goes to a higher pitch.
