I would really like to hear people talking more during the match. In 99% of matches it's just dead silence, no "Nice job, guys!", no "Look out, atlas behind you!" Nothing. It's kinda depressing, actually, I don't use mic because my pronunciation is terrible and though I'm russian it seems like I'm playing with people from other countries quite often, so it makes sense to speak english.

P.S. Yesterday I was playing with some british guy, I guess he was drunk, couldn't think straight and was talking sh*t but it was fun anyway.

The only time I don't like when someone uses a mic is if it's always on (annoying as anything) or if I can't understand what they're saying (because the mic does me no good).

However, as I now almost always play as a Krogan, I've found the headbutt between waves transcends language barriers.

(I swear I giggle like a 12 year old every time another Krogan and I headbutt each other like crazy between waves)

That moment when the other krogan ignores your headbutt...

this. ^

Also don't say "thank you" every time someone revives you and you're fine in my book.

Gotta admit I don't like talking on mic either. Trying to get more into it. English accents just don't tend to work as well for these things and I find hearing my own annoying when I'm so aware of it. Maybe that's just me.

I say use it. I had a match yesterday on silver where 3 of use where talking and it turns out we had pretty cool and funny woman who was from either Australia or the UK. The match was okay but being able to talk and have fun kind of pushed that feeling that the match wasn't too great away.

Just start of simple. If someone goes down get on mic and tell them you coming to res them. Sometimes people talk back and sometimes they don't just don't take it personally.

Either Australia or the UK? They're almost as far from each other as you can get!

I know some people think "kids shouldn't talk on the mic."  But for me, I care a lot more about what someone says than what they sound like.  I'd much prefer the squeeky voice that warns me about phantoms sneaking up on me than Barry White calling me a **** because I didn't want to revive him after he rant into the middle of 3 turrets.

For the record, neither of these has ever happened, because I play on PC and people rarely say anything.

Most people don't talk because they are afraid there might be a girl in game and then they wouldn't know what to do or say around her.

I use my mic only sparingly and pick and choose when to talk. Never once when I did talk did it make the game less fun, only more.

I have a good mic that I never use do to two "mayor" problems.
1. I have a trauma due to my first encounter with a 4th/5th rate mic/recording equipment. Since then I have had a deeply rooted fear of hearing my own voice and annoying others.
2. My voice covers an almost amazing range. I can do everything from a deep bass to the squeel of a five year old at will, but when I'm exited the pitch of my voice rises out of control making me sound like a 12 year old.

Should I use a mic anyways? and if you think I should please please offer some words of encouragement because I'm really, really, really scared of trying.

I'm sorry to say it so blunt and by all means I mean you no insult, but do you really think it appropriate to cousel random people on an internet community on what does look like lacking self-esteem issues?

I will gladly try to give my opinion fair and honest should you truly wish to discuss your issue with me, hence I shall wait.

P.S.: Forgive my writing style, was just reading a novel for three hours straight and it shows.

I have not thought of it like that but i am a coward by nature.
PS. Please tell me what novel it is I'm a sucker for good english books I read them faster than those in my native language (350-500 pages a day).

Was just saying that such an outing can be the same as throwing yourself to the wolves on the internet, shame on me now to see I was the only one that leaped on you Image IPB

The novel by gthe way is Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" I got myself a few days ago, just finished the first book about three hours ago and it is just as great as I have read others praise it.

"This    is CN.....damn"
"This      is a Krysae. Is that good? Need another one?"

I wish people would talk more. I become self-conscious when I'm the only one talking. I would say my english is fairly good, but my pronunciation dramatically decreases when I'm nervous.

You want a chatty game? Play with me. Mic is almost always on, and the banter flows. I have a pretty large friends list, and most of them are fairly chatty, too. Like the OP, I was originally a bit hesitant at the thought of speaking in 'public' but after getting a headset, I can scarcely imagine not playing the game without constant communication.

Is that why I seem to be the only one talking on the PC Image IPB?  Out of the 6 matches I played today, the only one where I wasn't the only one speaking was when it was 4 Krogan.

(thanks BTW guys-it was fun)  *KROGAN SMASH!*

So I finally tried my headset which have a very practical on/off button but I forgot to turn the mic on before shouting "Phantom behind you!" to my teammate (facepalm). On a sidenote I've discovered that my headset is good enough to locate enemies based on sound alone.

Hadn't thought about it that way. That sucks. :(  I'm a girl, and even when I get a team of teenage boys talking about their pretend love-lives, its still fun.

I don't use it much because I either get someone who wants to discuss every facet of MP as if they've never played a game before, or a bunch of hillbillies/homies who are practically unintelligible. Better to use it rarely to call out enemies that aren't readily apparent than to talk to other players.

As long as you don't have a high pitch whiny voice you will be perfectly fine on the mic.

Don't have a mic for Xbox, as I only use it as a Mass Effect console. If I ever get ME 3 on PS3 I have a mic for that so I'll no doubt use it.

I don't usually have a high pitched voice (only when I'm stressed/exited) since my voice stopped changing 4 years ago. And I don't whine either but there might be occational (rather often) swearing in Norwegian.

I had a Mic. It broke. I haven't yet gotten around to replacing it.

Addendum:  Wire shorted out, the headphones stopped working as well.

Honestly, OP, I really feel you on this one. Perhaps it's residual from when I had near crippling social anxiety in my late teens and early twenties (which I thankfully overcame), perhaps it's my deep seeded hatred of the phone (for reasons to long and personal to explain in a public forum), but I also don't like people hearing my voice. I, for one, and a classic case of someone who can use the internet more effectively for communication because of how much of myself is hidden in cyberspace. I love that there's no body language or eye movement to give away how I really feel, nothing that exposes who I am and what I'm like. I'm not saying I want to create personalities that are false, or want to pretend to be what I want to be (luckily, I'm what I want to be all ready), but that doesn't mean I want total strangers to have any clue what I'm like. I don't like opening up to people, and there's something about speaking that feels like it's opening up. Perhaps it's the fact that my intonation can give away feelings and thoughts I'd prefer to keep to myself. Perhaps it's that the avatar isn't a means by which one could recognize me, but my voice is. Whatever the reason, I am loathe to talk. But I do it anyway, because I'm also an arrogant ****, and arrogant ****s want to win. More talking means more winning.

Use it, hell PSN needs more people with mics, it makes games a lot better
