Dude, it's okay.
Sometimes I make Tauntaun noises on the mic. Just how it goes.

forget what others think, if thats impossible for you, put on an accent, if you're american, do a deep south voice, they're hilarious, if you're a brit, talk about your recent convo with the queen, some americans may believe you, if you're australian, talk about hunting crocs, or some other stereotype if you're from a different country, then you'll be laughing at least, **** everyone else

Most people don't talk because they are afraid there might be a girl in game and then they wouldn't know what to do or say around her.
I am a girl and one of the (minor) reasons I don't talk is because I am afraid of what people's reaction could be. I don't want to be kicked out of the game because I'm a girl and I made them fail their match and I don't know how to play, and I keep dying stupidly - stuff like that. It's a silly reason not to speak on the mic, I know.
Though it's not the only reason. Actually the main thing is that I'm French, and my English is not that bad but it makes me nervous to speak English (to actual Americans, English people etc...) on the mic. And then it gets me confused and I'm losing my words and my pronunciation becomes all messed up. And I feel stupid. (and it makes me even more nervous).
I recently added an American to my friends list, and he invited me to chat. You can't imagine how stressed I was. I think he managed to understand me, and apparently he recognized my voice as one of a girl, not a 12-year-old boy. But I didn't speak the whole match afterwards, (fortunately there was another friend of his, so they talked during the games) because I was too nervous and I couldn't concentrate on the game if I was trying to say anything.
But you know OP, once I got past the fear and accepted the invite to the chat group, I was really proud of me. I was completely stressed and traumatized, but I was proud of me, because I had finally spoken to someone - and in English.
I think you should just go for it, forget what you think about your voice and have fun speaking with people. I love hearing people talk during matches, and if I could participate in without nervosity, I'd do it.
As they say, "haters gonna hate". Just focus on the game, not on your voice or what anyone could think of it.
Kareaux, in my opinion, your greatest fear in using a mic during the game and being a French woman, should be that your friends list will grow astronomically, and that the number of instant messages being sent to you may very well overload the internet connection for your province...

Dammit!
Haha! Thank you!
There are actually more French girls playing Mass Effect than you think, you know.

I don't think it's what you sound like so much as it's what you say. I personally don't care what anyone sounds like, anytime someone warns me there's a phantom/hunter/rocket trooper/ravager/husk gang getting the creep on me, I'm happy to hear them.
