Well, I decided to go do some quests in Denerim after Lothering. Ran off the mercenaries in the Pearl and got splattered in the encounter that follows after. I'll take a break for now.

So I decided to start a no potion solo game for kicks. I'm not sure it can be done, and I know the two dragons are impossible to kill with no potions, but if I find a way to beat Uldred without potions, I think I can solo everything else on NM with no healing. I soloed up to the end of the tower with no problems with a DW Rogue.

Won't the vast majority of the random encounters be impossible with no potions?



I can think of four random encounters that are impossible: (1) being surrounded by wolves, (2) being surrounded by three boors and the one giant boor, (3) being surrounded by six darkspawn, including one hurlock emissary, three archers, and one yellow hurlock alpha, and (4) being ambushed by three elven archers on the hill, two bandits, and one yellow bandit.



Also, how the hell are you going to get past the Zevran ambush without using a potion?



Or kill Wynne in the circle tower?

I've done all of those encounters with no potions already with various characters. I've already done a lot of the game with no potions, I use very few potions in my solo games.

Even with a video, it's entirely possible to edit that sort of thing out. I could claim a fight is on nightmare mode and change the difficulty in mid-fight and edit that part out and you would never know. As Timortis said, there's a certain element of trust involved.

That's true, video is much better but I can't do it on my PC. It would kill my framerate. Anyhow, you're right, it's possible to kill the dragons using traps, I guess. I remember reading about a guy who one shot the high dragon using something like 90 shrapnel traps.



Maybe at some point, I'll go ahead and take sequential screenshots of the fights people think are impossible without potions and describe my strats. They usually involve a lot of movement and LoS'ing to prevent being attacked by too many enemies at once, among other things. For example, here's potionless Jarvia with a 2H Warrior.





You see that pillar where I kill Jarvia. I keep running back and forth around it as I fight, so archers can't Shattering Shot me. When they bunch up, I use a bomb etc. I used 2 bombs in that fight, it looks like.

I've been inspired. I never would of dreamed of saying this, especially when I first picked up the game, but nightmare running with fours is getting too easy. I've been hesitant to start a solo campaign but I finally gave it a shot today and I'm loooovvvvviiinggggggg it. I know I'm stating the obvious but it completely changed the way I approached the game. For the first time ever, I'm using grenades and poisons and I've been actually kiting enemies like its my job. I've been playing for about six hours and I''m at lothering about to take out the last of the bandits. I had thought that I would be too impatient to play solo but it turns out instead that I'm addicted again to DAO and I'm loving it. Thanks Timortis for the inspiration.

I found going through normal with a 2H berserker/champion quite difficult, yet on my current playthrough with a duel-wielding rouge things seem much easier.



Might the 2H configuration be a bit underpowered? How do duel-wielding warriors fare, or shield using warriors?

Ahh infinite traps. What would we do without you? Although I suppose you have a little less than infinite in DA:O...

Lol, I watched a video on youtube of a guy one-shotting the Ogre form of sloth with like 15 or so traps on his rogue solo. Cheap little.... could've at least used the shapeshifting forms + lyrium.



I really need to start a solo lol. But I'm going to finish my mage playthrough, first, to get the level 20 mage trophy (then I'll just need the wardens keep trophies, which I can't get as I don't have the DLC, and I'll have a platinum. I want that DLC lol).



Timortis, what would you recommend as a good start for a solo run? I was thinking Blood Mage/Arcane Warrior, but I'm not sure. Dual Wield Strength Warrior (fullsized weapons) sounds good too, as does 2h. I'm on console, so I won't do a rogue, and I doubt I could do archer until I've had some solo experience.



And with a Dual Wield or 2h Warrior, how did you beat the Ishal Ogre? Bombs?

With DW, Riposte, bombs, DW Sweep, with 2H, bombs and mighty blow mostly.



I wouldn't recommend str Warrior for a first solo run, they're the most difficult characters to play in my experience.
