Incredible survivability but doesn't it take very long to kill things? Don't you get bored? You don't have any AoE either.

Nonetheless he's really making me wanna try a solo tank. I'm thinking of going Reaver for Aura of Pain and throwing bombs on top of myself! :D

What do you need AoE for? Nobody can hit you. :P

And even if they do (sometimes happens when stunned) they still have to get through your 40+ AC and huge HP pool.

That said, this build is all about max protection so Champion / Templar makes a lot more sense - in which case you get Warcry for AoE.

I was talking about AoE for killing things faster. Warcry is very nice but it doesn't do damage. Anyway, it doesn't matter, obviously the build is effective but probably more suited for patient folk. :D

My DW Rogue has over 160 Defense. And then they say that mages are over-powered!

I never have to worry about my health bar. The only attacks that hit are some spells and talents like Ram (Ogre). During the battle with Jarvia and Branka they NEVER managed to hit me. In fact, while fighting Branka I went to the toilet ^^ and when I returned my character had 100% health and Branka 25% or so.

That's why I'm thinking of soloing an Arcane Warrior again, a Warrior or Rogue is a bit boring after a while.

Do we have a conclusion on which class/spec is the least boring and difficult/challenging at the same time?
I'm thinking of trying a caster mage or a 2h warrior, as I suspect none of these leave much room for error (I can't go afk for 5 minutes in the middle of a boss fight with either of these, can I?)...

I think a pure caster is the least boring. You have lots of spells to choose from (single-target, AoE...). And an Arcane Warrior + Blood Mage is also fun.

For a DW Warrior, DW Rogue or 2H Warrior every fight is the same. You use some talents, activate Berserk/Momentum/etc. and wait until your enemy lies dead. You can use traps/poisons but that's about it.

Well, melee characters do become click and forget at end-game if they're built defensively. STR based melee characters with low defense aren't really like that though. They have decent armor and HP but they're still quite vulnerable since they do get hit a lot, and in any hard fight they require a lot of active managing. They don't have a lot of different abilities like a caster, so most of the gameplay is in where you move, which ability you use when or save for later etc. I don't think it's boring. This is when soloing of course. If you have a healer like Wynn, any melee character becomes fire and forget. You can just run around killing things and never worry about your health bar.

Not very nice of you bas273 to say that when I am on DW Warrior at the moment, but I have to agree, and this time even with the Arcane Warrior part ;)

Despite it is not straightforward to stay away from routine even as a mage, certain spells are hard to resist .. , mage has the most tools at hand which in turn enables for user adjusted level of boring and fun. How does one gimp oneself as DW? Not running Momentum or investing in Magic? That is weak, mage can do it in style and creativity, maybe little pain.

About consensus I am skeptical.

It's hard to reach a consensus on what's fun. It's different for most people. There are even different kinds of fun, I'd say. For example, fighting the 4 bloodmages in the Brecilian forest with a solo melee character with no spell resist is fun, because it's challenging. You may have to reload a few times till you get it right.Of course, this is if you don't wait till end-game when you have stacked spell resist to do that quest. Doing the same quest with a Mage, looks like this:

Which is still fun in a different kind of way, but not very challenging.

Exactly.

As a Mage you can kill Zathrian, all Revenants etc. in 10 sec. This is fun because you're an over-powered killing machine B). As a Warrior/Rogue those fights are more challenging but rather boring (right mouse button, 2 minutes later -> health potion, etc.). So sometimes a battle is more rewarding as a Warrior/Rogue (because it took more effort) and sometimes as a Mage (because you used a good combination of tactics/spells).

For more challenge, "luring" the mages in to a group of bandits spawned on the spot of "the question guy" works well. Wtf? .. F9 .. good fight, memorable.

Btw Timortis, while playing warriors do you pull single targets with a ranged weapon, try to do body-pulls of only a few mobs or just run straight into the crowd?

While soloing you can follow some 'rules':
1) No exploits (infinite money, XP etc.)
2) No cheats/glitches
3) No pulling/luring (with a ranged weapon for example)
4) No force field exploits
5) Try to avoid kiting if possible
6) No DLC items from the beginning
7) Do not use companions for healing/support/skills (like Herbalism)

I usually follow all these rules. Rule 5 is not always possible (Ogre fight as a mage!).

I almost never use the bow after the low levels but there's something else about that too. Pulling with the bow with a Rogue and Warrior aren't the same. There's an AI behavior where if a group of enemies sees you and aggros and you use Combat Stealth and move back to range, you can pull mobs 1 at a time with a Rogue, whereas if you try to pull them from range in the first place, the same enemies come in 2s, 3s or more.

Whether I try to body-pull a few or run straight into the mobs depends on the encounter and the terrain. If I know I can't LoS the archers, sometimes I'll run through the melee and straight at them to kill them first. I'll run behind the archers and turn around so I can do a DW Sweep and hit the archer and the melee that have been chasing me etc.

Well i just wanna say i think doing NM on x box is harder...probably because since we have less enemies some of them tend to be stronger and hit everytime...well thats my guess
with 48 phys res at lvl5 i still get knocked down and stunned everytime.with 18 armor still getting hits over 20 dmg from whites that hit everytime...oh well anyone solo NM on x box yet? so far i only see PC tell me if you have seen someone.and also some kind of gold exploit would help for the x box.
***with a warrior****;)

So I'm almost at the archdemon battle, cleared the two sub-bosses in Denerim and got into Fort Drakon. Since the subject of whether soloing with a Warrior is only possible with spamming potions has come up before, I want to note that I haven't yet used so much as a single lesser healing potion the entire way up to this point in the final batte sequence.

Good job ;-)
I just started a solo run as an Arcane Warrior. Believe it or not but after 6 playthroughs this is going to be the first time that I'm going for the Ultimate Sacrifice

30 DEX for WW, the rest into STR. I don't think there are any full sized weapons that are good enough to justify not having Rose's Thorn in the off-hand. Maybe Starfang but I don't have that DLC.

Playing as an archer is.. boring IMO. Most bosses require kiting and you're basically running in circles while waiting for Arrow of Slaying to recharge.
