I must admit that he didn't fit with how I saw him from the books. I thought he seemed more like a spy type of assassin who used subterfuge and careful planning rather than a Tekken character.

The Kai Leng of the books was more of a match for Shepard than the weak, bumbling, gunship wielding buffoon that showed up in ME3. He should have been far deadlier and forced Shepard to use more skill and thought than he ever did with any other opponent. Instead he just goes "cover me, I need to recharge!" and hides like a little sissy. He could have been one heck of a nemesis for Shepard, but in the end he was just so much fluff.

Sad really.

What I was hoping for was a cold-blooded xenophobic Cerberus assassin, someone with skills like Thane and doesn't give a damn about Shepard, utterly devoted to the Cerberus cause.

Instead I got Raiden from MGS2, but even more boring and annoying.

Ok, I laughed at that Raiden comment.  My husband loves that game and knows how I've always felt about Raiden.  Imagine my complete horror when I decided to romance Thane and then Kolyat opened his mouth.  OMG..it's Raiden.  NOOOOOOOOOOO.....Thane..your son...Kolyat...Raiden...tell him to shut up before I start to call him a b**ch too.

As for Leng, I expected better.  I expected a little more from an alien hating, supposed badass assassin, someone like in the books...well minus the cereal eating part.  Instead I got..well, we all know what we got there.

Something other than a rejected Pokemon villain.

James Bond without the humor would fit.

Exactly this. That's how he was in the only canon novel he was in, so I expected some consistency there. What happened to the dude that knifed a krogan, wiped the floor with turians, and scared Anderson enough that after their first one on one encounter that he avoided attacking him directly thereafter? We got a charicature instead.

^^ THIS.  Image IPB  And I was super peeved that THIS cereal-eating, Nightwing costume-stealing lame-o assassin was the one to take down THANE?  Ugh.  He was not interesting, he was not badass and he was not a competent opponent.  He really doesn't even deserve this thread.

Had potential to be an awesome antagonist...but Bioware writing made him a laughable character.

agree with lookout1390 he had potential to be a good antagonist but Bioware reallly messed up on his character...I dare say hes more laughable of an antagonist than Harbinger was in Mass Effect 2...Really wish they got Harbinger more screen time in mass effect 3....

He just seems a little too desperate to prove himself, a little bit like Conrad verner..

I just couldn't take him seriously. There might be reasons to carry a sword, however there is no justification to carry NOTHING BUT a sword, as well as just jumping around and shattering floors instead of doing something usefull. It also didn't help that everyone turned into morons the second they saw him. Shepard and crew just let him fight Thane and don't even react when Leng is down for the count and at Chronos Station they don't even check if he's dead but decide to stare out the window and turn deaf instead.
As for his Character, underdeveloped is an understatement. His stupid e-mail had me laugh rather than be mad at him. You don't have to give him an hours long monologue, you just have to do it right.
Imho Tela Vasir displayed 10 times more character in the little time she had, in fact she's one of my favourite villains in the triology. So Bioware can get a character to work with little exposure to said character, but for some reason they decided Leng wasn't worthy of that.

He looked out of place with what he was wearing (too much like nightwing) and he sounded more badass in the leaked script if what I can remember is correct.

A speed bump that got served. Kai Leng just felt like a plot armored phantom. Easily killed and totally forgettable. Well, except for omni-blading his butt. That felt good.

I wanted someone like The Butcher, a leadership rival as well as a combat rival, and someone who has a better than one-cheat/two-loss record.

Kai Leng is Cortez' dead husband put through the Universal Soldier (UNISOL) program.
They wiped his mind of everything but his keen fashion sense.

Leng was my favorite character throughout the books. The game got him ruined. Turned down to some ninja-Phantom-guy with implants and a creepy voice, indoctrinated and complacent.

When he was the true fighter, the surviver, the cool killer, the professional during the books, he is just an idiot in ME3. Some 0815-badass villian just because they needed a new bad guy to fight. But to ruin a character that was set up so great - one of the many parts that could have been done better in ME3. I personally always hoped - if not save TIM and cerberus, please let Leng join my squad.

Just watch that haircut! Just to make him look ninja like! No killer yould use such a haircut because it is inefficient in cqb. My imagination of him in the books was really not that way.

BW, you messed up a character with hell of potential! Shame on you!

I still think miranda would have been the perfect villain. You got to know her in 2, which gives immediate insights into her motivations. Powerful biotic and fighter? check.

I'm sorry shepard, but i have to kill you. Oriana needs to be kept safe, and only cerebus can do that.

His Character might have been saved if the incounter of thesia was way different, as in a fist fight with Shepard(Stronger than a Krogan, and Faster than a leopard) wear Leng beats Shepard with Martial Arts rather than a gunship.

Someone who didn't suck to say the least. I actually picture him as intimidating and not sending such a troll post after Thessia.

Annoying as fudge.

And what was with giving an asian character a robo-mask with fake slanted eyes? Was I the only one that did a "WTF?" at that?

Leng was sent to prison for murdering a Krogan in a bar with nothing but a service blade. I think he was pretty accurately portrayed in the game. He seemed to me like a very talented assassin but was xenophobic and quick to lose his cool. He didn't stand a chance against Shep from the moment he was born. He's easy to hate, but I don't think he was a "cliche" like many do. Space ninja jokes aren't that funny. If you are talented enough with a blade, space marines in power armor would be easy pickings.

Not if said space marine just plants a bullet into space-Storm Shadow's head.

Like Thane should have done.

I liked they concept, didn't like the execution.
Something that was cut from the leaked script:
He was supposed to put you in a Virmire position between Liara and whoever you took with you.
The fact that it doesn't exist dissapoints me because:
A.I want to kill Liara so the game will stop feeding me her
B.Kai Leng would look like a force not to be reckoned with, instead we got a overhyped ninja assassin that cant do crap.
