I can beat the first wave but when they send us down to stop them at the lake they just keep coming! I seem to always die around the fire.
What am I doing wrong? Any tips? I have the female rogue, the female mage and Alister in my group.

Dont rush downhill, stay up, equip bows and just shoot them from afar. If too many of them run after you run up and kite, its perfect kiting spot really.

but with that tactic the militia will die. your not much of a hero then are you?
leliana should use bow and morrigan staff and her magic while alistair should be down taunting slicing the undead. what your pc should do depend on what he/she is. this fight isn't hard it's just long. which mean that you need potions if you haven't made morrigan into a healer.

Okies, try this: The knights are reasonably tough already. Tell Ser Perth about the oil in the general store. Make sure you have recruited Lloyd, Dwynn and gotten Owen to fix the militia weapons.
Start with your party at the top with the knights. Kill everything at the top for no more than two minutes. Use ranged weapons only. Then leave the knights and move into the village with your party. Deploy any traps you have or can make. Wait. The knights should be able to handle the remaining top waves.
What your mage does depends on who she is and what spells she has. If she is Wynne, and she is configured for healing, do not let her attack. She will use less mana and be of more use if she heals. You may want to control her from time to time to heal villagers. If she is Morrigan or if you have changed Wynne into a battle mage, then she needs to use non-aoe spells if you want to have the villagers live. Virulent Walking Bomb is a big no-no if you're going for survivors (even though it is tres amusant). Cone of Cold is also a bad idea. If all you want to do is survive yourself and don't care about the villagers, than use whatever you have.
The undead follow set paths to the center of the villager mass and then aggro somewhat randomly. If you pay attention to their pathing, you'll be able to deploy your party so that all the aggro falls on Alistair and your shoulders. That simplifies healing a great deal.
The villagers are better at ranged combat than at melee. It is also a great deal safer for them. The undead are the opposite. So you need to fight them at range or have them aggro onto a damage absorber. Alistair is perfect for this role. Have him taunt frequently. Don't worry about his damage. Just keep the skellies mad at him. Then let the villagers pepper them with arrows.
Micro-management concerns are your mages' mana level. If you're using healer-Wynne, then keep her topped off with mana. If you have battle Wynne or Morrigan, then don't worry about mana too much. If you use Alistair or yourself as tanks, then have each character's tactics set to use health poultices. I typically set my usage at <50% but your mileage may vary. The main trick is keeping the skellies off of the villagers and on whomever you pick as a tank.

Have you recruited everybody? There are several NPC's you can recruit around the village before the battle.
Do you have heal spells? Dont waste any healing (other than group heal) on your party. Use both heal and regenerate on the NPCs. Dont let them die. If your party take damage, use group heal, if its not enough make them use heal potions. Save all other heals for the NPCs. To see the NPC health bars, pause the game and press tab. (Unless ofc you have changed the default shortcut keys. - then I cant help you.)
I aways run down with the scout, never have I tried to shoot them from afar. When you get there, kill the Elite Guy first. He is the biggest threat to the NPC's down there. Once hes dead, just move from 1 mob to the next (FOCUS FIRE), try targetting the lowest health enemy BUT close by. Dont try to kill a mob on 30% on the other side of the fight when there is a 50% mob standing right next to your party. So make clever choices.
The key is to kill the Elite guy first, heal the NPC's, make your party members use health pots if needed (dont waste heals on them) and always try to focus fire the enemy on lowest health, unless ofc it means having to have your entire party move loads to get to it. (ofc if you all ranged this isnt a problem at all.)
Goodluck mate and hope it helps.

And ofc depending how well geared your tank is at that stage when you save the village. Depending how late you choose to go there, you can at later stages, if youleave Redcliffe to like later in the game to save, just have your tank spam taunt everytime its on cd and just heal your tank.
Even tho the mobs scale, I found that Redcliffe is easier to save at later stages of the game than at the start. Thats the reason I always tend to go to Redcliffe first for the challenge unless I need Wynne, then its mage tower all the way.

Tanking is very important here.
I always do redcliffe first and usually I use two tanks, one being Alistair of course(main tank), other being me or Sten(offensive/second Tank). Keep the undead off the militia at all cost. Unlike many think, they could help a lot with their range attack and shattering shots, which could knock enemies back. And a significant number of them using shattering shot means some of the enemies won't even get to attack much.

Mr first play through I did the quests in Redcliffe, Brecilian, Tower, Orzammar order. This run through I'm going Tower, Orzammar, Redcliffe and Brecilian last. I do not trust Wynne and Oghren to make good life choices as to stats, skills and spells without my guidance.
So I'm going to have a lot of crowd control options when I get to the multi level village.

Also a good thing to remember is when you do head to the village for the 2nd part of the battle that you immediately locate Murdock and have your party protect him at all costs. I even have my mage heal him if he needs it, keeping Murdock alive is key.
Yes I always go ge shale and Oghren as soon as I finish up lothering and ever since I have downloaded the mod that puts a chest in your camp I leave soldiers peak to near the end or when ever I get around to doing it, its only for exp now.
I can't believe Bioware did such a ****** poor job on soldier's peak, did they think no one would make a mod to make that DLC almost a complete waste of time? Also if they were only including it so that the PC has a chance to hit the level cap then they could have included a few more "kill areas" like soldiers peak because the level cap is pretty much impossible to reach as it is. Even the potion you can drink to allow the player to have a darkspawn line of talents/spells has zero impact on the game, it makes no difference if you drink it or not ...at the very least you would think someone in the party would have a comment about it. So all Soldier's peak gets you is the chest, which can be got with a mod and should have been in the camp anyway, and the star metal weapon which is pretty nice but a whole DLC for that?

Yeah, I did the same once as well and left Redcliffe to like last and was shocked at how easy it was to save compared to going earlier. It was so easy, at some stages my characters where just standing about waiting for the undead guys to spawn... was disappointing

One last thing: Enchantment. You're fighting undead exclusively at Redcliffe and up at the castle. If you have any weapons that can be enchanted, it may be worth your while to cruise the markets for Cold Iron Runes. They do extra damage against the undead. Sandal, in your camp, does enchanting for free.

I wish they would have made enchantment a bit different because I find that the runes take up too much space in my inventory. The way it should have been done is when you get new runes you simply give them to Sandal and he keeps them in his inventory for the PC to use, that way you would not have to carry them around. Also you might think putting them in the storage chest at soldier's peak to be a good idea, but then you have to run back and forth from camp the the Peak and again it all could have been so much easier if only Sandal held the runes....

I had 1 playthrough where I managed to keep everyone alive. Lots of micromanagement, CC and taunt, and of course heals (Murdock is sooooo squishy!!). The playthrough after that I figured I could do it again, but I had 2 major things that were different:
1 - I got the militia free drinks. I gotta wonder if that was a bad thing >_<
2 - I didn't have haste. I think that really might've decided it, because when I *did* have haste I got to the bottom of the hill before the undead got to the militia.

If you are running out of space in your backpack, I suggest you be a lot more aggressive in getting rid of stuff you dont want. I'm a packrat by nature in these games but now I just sell the stuff unless I know I'm going to eventually use them.
With runes, I found that I tended to keep a few "average quality" weapons with two or more slots on them and just put runes that I thought I might need on them. If you rune up a 2slot weapon you save a space. ie instead of 2 spaces for 2 runes, you only use 1 space for a weapon that happens to have two runes. Its silly to have Sandal "hold" the runes for you. You might as well his dad to hold all your spare weapons and armour for you too ...
